PVP realm question

Unread post by Quiv »

OK so I am levelling a toon on a PVP realm. I levelled to 50 on my regular realm so i could bring a good chunk of gold with me, then I moved.

My question is this: what benefit is derived from a high level (90) killing a low level? Do they gain honor points?

Getting jumped by toons in my level bracket is fun and competitive to me. For the first time in YEARS the world feels dangerous.

But high levels you cant do anything with. They fart and you die. I don't get why they do it. The only reason I can think of is to be an asshole.

Further more, why is this allowed? Being jumped/ganked by appropriately levelled people I get, enjoy even. There is no gameplay being served by high levels ganking low levels. I'm a rogue so I just vanish and lolaway but still, made me scratch my head.

Edit: Yeah yeah yeah I know the whole "you signed up for this on a pvp server." Im not complaining about it to change it, I am wondering about it from a gameplay perspective.

Absolutely NO incentive/perks/whatever. People are just jerks who get pleasure in ruining someone's day and going "lololol I killed the level 50 when I'm level 90 I am so tough"

It's one of the reasons I hate pvp servers. If they made it so high levels can't gank anyone five levels lower than them, I'd be alright with that.

But yeah, there's nothing they gain out of it other than stroking their tiny epeen.

there were like 12 horde camping honor hold. I just rezzed and stealthed and sat back and watched. I couldnt figure out for the life of me why they do it, 12 people picking off 2 to 3 lowbies in 1 shot every... idk 2-3 minutes? they just stood around for the most part. a lowbie would come in, dead in 3 seconds... theyd stand around for a while.

its like an adult walking into a nursery and beating up babies and then doing /flex.

That's pretty typical, unfortunately. My fiance started on a pvp server and people would camp starting areas(before the lvl 95 elite guards).

Yeah and that is sad. and I am very surprised it hasnt been addressed, especially with devs tweeting and talking about how "fun for one" is ok as long as it doesnt make it unfun for many (talking about how they watch tanks in battlegroups, multi-boxing in case it crosses that line). high level picking off low level crosses that line.

but if you take away the ability for high levels to kill low levels, griefers will still find a way to grief. kill quest givers or flight paths etc. i suppose i expected some honor in pvp, and the few people that i actually pvp in the world with, those competitive level horde that tangle with me, i salute them. thats pvp, real pvp. not the asshattery these high levels engage in. i suppose i was naive to think the heart of pvp was alive on pvp servers.

i sat here and watched a single rogue use Throw to pick off 21 lowbie kills in under 5 minutes. an equivalent level showed up and destroyed him as he was chasing a mounted lowbie. within minutes, 3 more people from the rogues guild showed up. there was only one real pvp exchange during this entire thing, only one player verses player fight that spoke to the heart of what it should be. the rest was cowardice on parade.

Edit: just now questing in hellfire, lvl 60 horde dk gripped me (lvl 59). we squabbled a few times, was so much fun. then a lvl 90 horde showed up with near 400k hp and ALL FUN MUST CEASE NOW.

I don't play on PVP realms (well, mostly) but I know part of the reason for ganking (a small part probably... some of the high level gankers do it just 'cause they can) is that they're hoping you'll either log on your high level main or will bring in guildmates to attack them back. That's how some pretty epic world PVP gets going: retaliation.

Anyhow I won't bother with the usual "if you don't want to PVP..." spiel, you're obviously enjoying the excitement that comes with evenly matched world PVP. It's just that while you're leveling you'll have to suffer a bit, while bored players get their jollies.

I feel so bad for you Quiv. :< Maybe they should make quest givers unkillable too or atleast surrounded by level 95 elite guards

Thanks, but honestly its not my fortune I get irritated at. I'm a rogue on that server, so a little patience and a Vanish is all I need for safety if high levels get ganky with me (sometimes they can still see me from across the world seems like though)

Its the guys without stealth that get picked on I get up in arms about. I can't imagine the poor sap who picks up wow for the first time, knows what pvp means but doesn't yet understand the implications of a pvp server.

As I continue levelling, I am going to see if I can detect patterns - are certain times of day/night worse for high level ganking, do they prefer entry level zones (like hellfire) or popular zones (like nagrand) but rarely go out to others (like blades edge)... that sort of thing. I got quite a bit of questing done today, hit 60 and can now fly. Ill what difference that makes too.

Good or bad, right or wrong, its par for the course on a server like this with players like that. No consequences for acting like that. Glad my buddy told me PICK ROGUE NEED ALL THE STEALTH

Yeah, Rogues are pvp kings in a nutshell. If you got Subtly, you'll be fine but yeah. It almost turned my fiance off from WoW completely.

I used to play on Barthilas (not my choice my guild at the time moved) and i lvled from 85-90 the opening week of mop. Things were pretty civil for the most part but when i went back to lvl alts oh boy did i get a shock.

People camp the dark portal alot too which i found stupid and pointless. Sometimes it was ok, if others of your faction where around there was this sense of "us v them" and the social aspect of wow came back abit but if you were alone and a higher lvl found you...ergh.

I agree :) I remember the 'grace period' of MoP as one of the best times I've had in WoW. I've had some off-time then and lvled in the first 3 days (when most of people were not interested in anything that would hinder their lvling speed, namely pvp), but oh laddies&lassies was that fun, both with helping eachother and lvl-appropriate skirmishes.
Much loves to certain troll DK from VotFW silkmoth area (we arrived at the miniboss quest place together, we used AoD/Stampede, we killed miniboss, we survived each other summons, we saluted each other and went separate ways, and somehow the sun seemed to be brigher from then on) and to a certain tauren WR in Kun-Lai (/sorry, but seriously, a tauren standing in the middle of yaungol camp, when everyone around is fighting for mob tags IS asking for an accident to happen).
Aaah, good times :D

As for ganking. there are a few places to avoid and you're safe. In lvl order these are:
- Gadgetzan - I think so, although I've never been there on a pvp serv on the appropriate lvl yet; but everytime I pass it on my way to Ony, I see a lot of bones, and sometimes even some fighting.
- enterrance to CoT, where you appear when you take the portal from Dala - although much less now in MoP
- Blasted Lands, area around the portal, especially the spots where you appear after teleporting from a city - almost always you're dead before your loading screen disappears, even as lvl90.
- Hellfire Peninsula - again, around the portal, gankers love killing characters, while their players are forced to stare at the loading screen.
- Mount Hyjal
- the first hub of the VotFW and the whole eastern part of the zone in general
Grab a few instances or simply bypass those and you should be ok :)
