I do think it being a mini pet is a factor but not the primary.
And one thing I was just thinking. This ........issue could potentially have very damning effects for people who have the baby direhorn. The taming of the baby was the first putting of Blizzard's foot down. And now with such severe backlash for and against I wonder if those with the baby direhorn are now in danger of theirs getting changed. Again. No proof just thoughts.
We invented a special macro to tame pets with buffs, and no one got banned or changed over that (unless you got caught with the 20% permahaste bug). We ran to an island that was bugged out the butt in WoD and ghost-ran several miles over and over to reach the Thunderlord's Rylak that was stuck half in a rock. The ghost slime might have been a walk up and tame but it was glaringly obvious it was just an oversight with the code being attached to the crocolisk being attached to all the summons. There's been a special shrink-powder quest item bug to put on pets that hasn't been fixed, ever, and it was introduced in WRATH. Of all the stuff we've pulled, getting into a class hall is benign. Especially since we weren't the ones stacking AK with it....
The direhorn has existed for over a year now, and it'd be a very bad call to rip them away from a customer perspective. The puppies, well, you had a week. That's about as long as any fix in the making's ever been. The lengths of refunds and lost time they'd have to justify to angry customers over it - hell, I wouldn't have bought Legion if I thought this was the way Blizzard was going to treat unintended pet hunters.
