StableHelper addon, language help request

Unread post by Xota »

I'm working on a BfA revision of the StableHelper addon, since the author hasn't updated it yet. They had localizations in the original version, and that's something I'd like to do too. I've never done those before, and unfortunately I only speak English (I can speak enough German for a German speaker to think, "this person doesn't speak German").

If multilingual folks would like to see a version of that addon in their language, your help would be appreciated. The ability nicknames I've tried to keep short and/or recognizable, based off of what the effect is frequently called. Just the normal colored text is what I'd like translated, the blue text is explanation if needed.

Shield Wall Reduces damage taken by a percent on a cooldown
(auto) automatically casts
(toggle) player has control over when it casts and if it autocasts
Dodge Has a chance to avoid a physical hit
Snare slows enemy movement speed
Dispel removes a magic buff from enemy (and enrage buff)
Mortal Wounds reduces enemy healing taken

AOE Area damage
Water Walking
Magic Resistance Reduces magic damage taken
Physical Resistance Reduces physical damage taken (subtracts, not percentage)
Tanky Bonus Armor, and bonus healing recieved
Thorns Does damage to attacker
Heal casts a healing spell
prowl stealth for animals
with self heal Pet heals itself, used as "Shield Wall with Self Heal"
Reincarnation Pet can come back to life at full health
Slowfall
(ranged) from a ranged distance
Fast Runs fast
Cannibalize Eats corpses for health, energy. Like the Forsaken ability.

Ferocity The 3 pet specs
Cunning
Tenacity
Unknown spec
No abilities
(Exotic)
Abilities
Attack speed: seconds between attacks

Also, I'd like to know what your tooltips look like when its up for your pet, and when its up for a wild beast.
eg:

Code: Select all

Petname
Xota's Pet
level 110

Code: Select all

Bristlemaul
Level 110 Beast
I know this is a significant request. Help would be appreciated, but there's no pressure. I won't resent anyone if they don't feel like doing any translation.

That's brilliant! Unfortunately I don't speak any other language well enough to help. But I do wonder if the official names for many of these things could be gleaned from the API. Unfortunately I've never coded an addon, so I'm not much use there, and my search through API data tonight just left me more confused on whether it's possible or not. The Blizzard Developer API page may have more info, but I think that's passworded (any app developer can apply for access) and I'm not home to check, but I will when I can access my password. Essentially I'm wondering if you could, say, tell the addon to print the name for Hunter spec 2, or a spell with a certain ID, and it'll do so in the user's localization without you ever needing to know those strings yourself. That would be ideal, I just don't know if it's that easy.

I've been looking through https://www.townlong-yak.com/framexml/2 ... trings.lua. I think I can get some of it, and looking through WoWhead's alternate language pages. At least for the latin letter languages. But I expect there are colloquial, grammar, and quirks, even in those. I almost had "seduce" instead of "snare" in German. I'll take another crack when I'm better rested, I expect asking for proof-reading instead of translating would be more manageable.

edit:
Actually I went ahead and tried one anyways.

Code: Select all

L["Shield Wall"] = "Schildwall"
L[" (auto)"] = " (automatish)"
L[" (toggled)"] = " ein/aus"
L["Dodge"] =  "Ausweichen"
L["Snare"] = "Verlangsamung"
L["Tranq/Dispel"] = "Magie und Wut entfernen"
L["Mortal Wounds"] = "Trauma"

L["AOE"] =  "AOE"
L["Water Walking"] = "Wasserwandeln"
L["Magic Resistance"] = "Zauberwiderstand"
L["Physical Resistance"] = "Schlagfest"
L["Tanky"] = "Tankig"
L["Thorns"] = "Dornen"
L["Heal"] =  "Heilung"
L["Prowl"] = "Schleichen"
L[" with Self-Heal"] =  "mit Selbstheilung"
L["Reincarnation"] = "Reinkarnation"
L["Slowfall"] = "Langsamer Fall"
L[" (ranged)"] = " (distanz)"
L["Fast"] = "Schnell"
L["Cannibalize"] = "Kannibalismus"

L["Ferocity"] = "Wildheit"
L["Cunning"] = "Gerissenheit"
L["Tenacity"] = "Hartnäckigheit"
L["Unknown spec"] = "Unbekannte spez."
L["No abilities"] = "Keine Fähigkeiten"
L["(Exotic)"] = "(Exotisch)"
L["Abilities"] = "Fähigkeiten"
L["Attack Speed:"] = "Angriffstempo:"
I've been looking for if the game recognizes Swedish or Danish addon localizations, and I'm not finding any information about it, so I think it might not. The languages I see listed are Portuguese(Brazilian), Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Spanish (Iberian and Mexican), French, English, Italian, Korean, and Russian.

Here's my attempt at the Spanish version.

Code: Select all

L["Shield Wall"] = "Muro de escudo"
L[" (auto)"] =     " (auto)"
L[" (toggled)"] = " (activar/deactivar)"
L["Dodge"] = "Esquivar"
L["Snare"] = "Frenado"
L["Tranq/Dispel"] = "Enfurecer/mágia elimina"
L["Mortal Wounds"] = "Heridas letales"

L["AOE"] = "Área de efecto"
L["Water Walking"] = "Caminar por el agua"
L["Magic Resistance"] = "Resistencia a la mágia"
L["Physical Resistance"] = "Resistencia a la físico"
L["Tanky"] = "Tanquoso"
L["Thorns"] = "Espinas"
L["Heal"] = "Cura"
L["Prowl"] = "Acechar"
L[" with Self-Heal"] =  " con autocuración"
L["Reincarnation"] = "Reencarnación"
L["Slowfall"] = "Caída lenta"
L[" (ranged)"] = " a distancia"
L["Fast"] = "Veloz"
L["Cannibalize"] = "Canibalismo"

L["Ferocity"] = "Ferocidad"
L["Cunning"] = "Astucia"
L["Tenacity"] = "Tenacidad"
L["Unknown spec"] = "Espec. desconocido"
L["No abilities"] = "Sin habilidades"
L["(Exotic)"] = "(Exótico)"
L["Abilities"] = "Habilidades"
L["Attack Speed:"] = "Segundos por ataque"
Also, if anyone is using a non-English version of WoW, could you check something for me?
With your hunter pet out, could you type:
/dump UnitCreatureFamily("pet")

The result should be two lines, the second line will be either "empty result" or
[1] = "Bear"
except instead of Bear, it can be another word. Is that word in English, or in your language?

This is what I have working right now. It's listed as "experimental" just in case there's bugs that don't show up on my setup, that would be on other people's. If you try it, and find a bug or translation error etc, please let me know.

In your game settings in the Battle.net client I think you can set it to other languages and it'll download those localizations and you can test them out. But I think it may be difficult to remove them again later, if that matters. I once tried switching to the Chinese version to see if I could get some alternative models. and I had a hard time making it go away again, but that may have just been me :P

Trying it out this morning it worked fine, I like that it gives the spell effect and not the name like SBs have "Heal" and Core Hounds have "Thorns", so much easier than giving the name and trying to remembering what the spell does :D so happy :hug: :mrgreen:

Thanks Wain. That worked, and I did it on my beta account, just in case it wouldn't switch back. Unfortunately, the function result wasn't in English. I'll be able to copy all the family name localization from wowhead; time consuming, but easy enough.

I can't thank you enough for taking the time to update this addon, I used StableHelper a lot as a quick and easy reference. With the recent pet changes especially I was wanting something like that again. I'm surprised there isn't something like this built in on Blizzard's end honestly.

Seems to be working just perfectly for me so far! :)
