From the secret finders discord, Lemlia Luna discovered that Blood Seeker (the bat that trolls people farming Aeonaxx) does not retain its name after the prepatch.

Re: Compiling a database of pets that retain their names after taming
Found another that keeps its name; Hardknuckle Matriarch from Sholazar Basin, spawned during the quest "Tormenting the Softknuckles". It wasn't listed on any of the name pages. It's pretty cruel though; you bully her children and then force her to serve you. One of the most evil tames!
EDIT: "Ravenous Mangal Crocolisk" from the quest "Just Following Orders" also retains its name when tamed. Both have the little shield with an exclamation point on their portrait, which all pets that I've tamed with that icon have kept their name without fail. My reasoning is as such;
- Major targets in Sholazar such as Farunn and Shango do NOT have this icon, and don't keep their names
- Random animals with different names such as Hardknuckle Matriarch and Ravenous Mangal Crocolisk do have that icon, AND keep their names
Worth looking into with beasts we don't have listed as retaining their names. The ! shield icon seems to be the major factor in name retention for quest NPCs.

Re: Compiling a database of pets that retain their names after taming
Updated, thanks! Maybe more quest NPCs do retain their names, though it doesn't make as much sense if they don't have special names.
Though honestly I'd be fine if every creature, no matter how trivial, kept their original name after taming, as long as hunters get one free rename.

Re: Compiling a database of pets that retain their names after taming
Agreed; every animal SHOULD keep its NPC name when tamed, unique or not. Mammoths and elekks are totally different creatures that only vaguely resemble one another, and it's pretty generic to call lions, tigers, cheetahs, lynxes, and sexy Batman villains "cat". I have a friend who has some snakes in real life, and he never refers to them as "snake", but the actual breed of snake. When you go to a zoo, you don't walk up to the fish tank and see the fish listed as;
- Fish
- Fish
- Fish
- Fish
- Fish
...and so on. Hell, even Hemet Nessingwary ingame refers to beasts as what they are. Dude doesn't just tell us to go kill any beast, but rather gives us SPECIFIC targets. This has been something I've wanted for a long time, and we've gotten so many new additions to name retention. Just a bit more and it'd be perfect. For example; Xibalan Apex sounds way cooler than Devilsaur, Predatory Bloodtusk sounds way more awesome than Boar, Azure Mage Slayer sounds better than Hound, and Venomhide Ravasaur sounds way more interesting than Raptor. Retain ALL names, give one free rename, and everything would be great. Hell, it'd also mean you wouldn't need to keep editing specific entries to say that they retain names!
EDIT: Also, I'd like to make my panda tame everything named "Guardian of", like Guardian of the Spring and Guardian of the Deep. It'd go well with my Guardian of the Elders.

Re: Compiling a database of pets that retain their names after taming
Lost Offspring of Gahz'ranka keeping its name is excellent for several reasons. The main one being that it's the longest name for a pet now! At 28 characters in its name, it beats the previous best at 26 with Siltstalker the Packmother.
EDIT: Apparently there were several at 27 characters, including Blackshell the Impenetrable. This makes me want to go write a list of the longest-named beasts now.
