My Old Friend
I've briefly come back to WoW, originally to test some PetEmote stuff but also for the anniversary. Time will tell if I stick around again.
However, I came to realise today that a few of Vare's pets are seemingly missing. I have no recollection of releasing them, and two in particular I knew I wanted to keep. Those being Tala - an ember worg who went by Barnabus before I found her, and though she was 'replaced' by Hati I still wanted the original around - and Myst - a ghostsaber who I'd trekked all the way to Darkshore as a blood elf way back in TBC the moment then-Lakita was the right level to tame them.
To say I was devastated was an understatement.
I could perhaps have tried submitting a ticket to get them back, or at least get some confirmation of if I had in fact released them at some point. But I didn't want to risk being handed a canned response about game mechanics and essentially "tough luck", so I made the journey to Darkshore to reclaim my kitty. Eight statues later, she returned.
Except, something made me search for more to tame a second ghostsaber. Perhaps it was just the aesthetic desire to have two of the same pet. I realised as soon as I found the next statue what it was - a sweet, elderly cat I had met and bonded with every time I walked past her house on my way to or from the train station. Last I saw her was about a month ago, thin, frail, elderly but full of so much love. I fear that she may have passed since that final visit.
Lo and behold, that ninth statue held the spirit of another ghostsaber.
You may not have been my pet, but welcome home Foggy.

Rest in peace mum. I really did love and miss you, even if I never got to see you.
