Re: Private server company forced to pay Blizzard $88 millio
Honestly, I think it's fine. Blizz devs work damn hard to create the game, and we're not just talking about drawing a concept, it's billions upon billions of line of code, it's the work of hundres of programmers, artists, writers, etc. ... and these people running the private servers just use it without permission.
Perhaps it's because I am an academic and appreciate the value of intellectual ownership (since what I create is ideas, writings, and concepts), but I honestly think this type of intellectual theft is a serious crime. I'm glad the courts agree.

It's less that and more Please do not steal our stuff or steal money from us because when we catch you we will put the hurt on you so big, you will be left a broken, crying, tattered piece of humanity with no place to call home.Redith wrote:Blizzard. play our way or will sue ya

$85,478,600 of statutory damages is way to much. I'm quite sure the company will appeal it. If they only made a few million then I'm doubtful they could come up with $85 million.
Re: Private server company forced to pay Blizzard $88 millio
Dude look it's not that they're really gunning for that much money but, more of the fact do you think this really is the ONLY 'company' that did private servers? You think this will be the only company to do so?AdamSavage wrote:$85,478,600 of statutory damages is way to much. I'm quite sure the company will appeal it. Blizzard is trying to, as it's put, Put the fear of god into these thieves basically. To show that if you risk doing this, you will be caught and you will be left seriously hurting. And they don't care how poor it leaves you.
You know kinda like how Prison used to be before people watered it down cause lolz human rights for law breakers.

Again you took the words right out of my mouth. And apparently the court agrees with Blizz.Ryai wrote:Dude look it's not that they're really gunning for that much money but, more of the fact do you think this really is the ONLY 'company' that did private servers? No it is more like, Blizzard. Steal our game and our software or we will sue you.Redith wrote:Blizzard. play our way or will sue ya
Ok it might be alot but isn't it just the earnings? Im sure say someone stole your game and sold it on you would want money for your hard work back? Which someone else was getting a profit off.
I've never understood fake realms but hopefully this action will but people off them.

Re: Private server company forced to pay Blizzard $88 millio
85 million dollars is a lot.
The only thing I wonder is:
How many private servers were taken offline after this information has been broadcasted?
I say yes, private servers are theft and theft shouldn't go unpunished.
But I still wish, someone would come around and buy Robert Kottick / Activision out again, so WoW would have a chance to come back to where it came from: One of the best computer games ever instead of a license to print some greenbacks. *sigh* And while we're at it, could someone please shut down facebook? And I want a Mercedes, too...

Re: Private server company forced to pay Blizzard $88 millio
I think it's fine.
I'm pretty sure, if they had been running a private server for free, Blizz would just have made them shut it down, maybe sued for a token amount.
The guys they shut down here were not just running a private server, they were charging money for it. Whole different ball-game, both legally and morally IMO.

Figures.A judge in the California Central District Court ruled Thursday that Scapegaming, also known as Alyson Reeves, has lost its lawsuit against Blizzard. Scapegaming had set up private Blizzard servers that included a microtransactions market.
