To be fair, this is the first time in a long time that I felt so inspired to spend so much time levelling in the coliseum, so that's completely understandable Gorman :)

Day 55
Failed recruits: 9

There was a commotion early one morning as the crone twins dashed up to Piccante. "Leader dearest, there is trouble in the swamp!" Cried Aleksey.
"The very silt beneath the waters stir." Nadya continued. "We sense both benevolence and malevolence."

No sooner had the words left the Skydancers' mouths did the surface of the marsh heave. The three were at the bank in an instant, the rest of the Pack gathering gradually behind. "What about your wards?" Piccante asked urgently. "Didn't you set up something to keep monsters out?"

"Not monsters."

What? Before more could be said the surface of the water lurched and broke, revealing a very bizarre-looking creature that resembled an Aether, only its fur rippled like thick mud and a long, red protrusion sprouted from the back if its head. "Hi!" it chirped, in a very happy tone. "You guys need to leave! I'll help!"

Clydri joins!
Image

---
17. Ambushed! Monster hunters have somehow located the pack's location! Flip a coin. If heads, most of them manage to escape; exalt one random dragon. If tails, three random dragons fall during the escape and must be exalted.

After a very strangely understandable conversation from the swamp dragon it was revealed that, all this time, Aethers who had adapted to living in such environments lived here, using their sludgy skin to blend in and their head protrusions to catch food from the surface. They had become agitated by the recent activity and were preparing to drive the lycans out - by force if necessary. And they were coming as they spoke.

Piccante thanked the Aether, named Clydri, for the warning and ordered the Pack to gather up all their belongings and move out, now, now, now! In a flurry all the dens were cleared of important supplies and everyone began to form a group at the edge of the den site. Unfortunately Alita and Marshal had become curious about this place and had gone out to explore. A cry carried over the waters followed by furious splashing as Marshal was seen tugging on a blue paw sinking into the swamp, surrounded by red tentacles similar to Clydri's.

Clydri flew out, diving into the murk to negotiate while the rest of the pack rushed out either as a distraction or to help pull Alita free. A struggle ensued, but eventually the Guardian was pulled free and everyone fled back to shore. Marshal and the crones hung back as Alita coughed up a concerning amount of muddy water, having come very close to drowning. As the waters swelled again, they set out as soon as she was able to walk.

Welp, time to find another new home.

Alita loses her extra life!

Gene: Good luck! They’ve blessed you with excellent loot. Give both an extra life.
Recruitment Phase: Both recruits automatically join with an extra life each.

"Halt! Who goes there?"

The sudden command barely affected Piccante. Where a few Pack members faltered she instead sighed, turning to face the one making demands. A pair of Guardians, possibly related to Alita and Marshal in some way, glared at her. Though one was far more convincing than the other. "This is our territory." The first Guardian continued as her partner nodded enthusiastically. "And we will attack if you don't-- Ack!"

Enough was enough. The journey. The constant need to move. The attacks. This was just another annoyance and Piccante wanted none of it. To everyone's surprise the Imperial had launched herself at the speaker, pinning her to the ground. The other scarpered a short distance away, lost without her braver counterpart.

"Okay, okay! You win! Please, get off!"

"You threatened me first." Piccante pointed out.

The Guardian squirmed. "Old habits, I'm sorry. I used to be a knight for my old clan but Jassu and I were cast out when we Turned. I-I just wanted to show her I was still capable! Maybe our clan, too!"

"Is anyone else here?"

"N-no. Just us."

"Then this is our territory now."

"B-but--"

"And you can stay, just don't do that again."

Azami and Jassu join!

2. Romance. Pick two of your ready to breed dragons at random if you have any. Put them on a nest. The cubs will join the pack when they hatch. Level them to 5 when they come of age. If the parents would be exalted while they’re on the nest, wait until their nest hatches and Then exalt them. If nobody is ready to breed, grab a random hatchling off the AH. A secret forbidden child or sibling has been uncovered.
Image Image

Later, after claiming the area and setting up a new den alongside Azami and Jassu, Piccante retreated to the edge of the site to collect her thoughts. She missed Daleth. She didn't like being looked to as leader. She made furniture for goodness' sake! What was she supposed to do?

It was a surprise then to find Ghassan already sitting where she was making her way to. Not that she'd wanted to come here specifically - it would be easy enough to find somewhere else - yet something about the way the Ridgeback held himself instilled pity in her. Without knowing exactly why, she approached him.

"Thinking about Whistler?" she asked, softly yet matter-of-factly.

Ghassan bristled slightly but round on Piccante. "Yeah." he muttered, adjusting his footing uncertainly. "Just... can't believe he wouldn't let go of his role play. Thought he'd learn the first time we got in trouble."

Piccante snorted. "Strange way to live life."

"Everyone has their own beliefs."

Silence fell between them, though it wasn't awkward nor uncomfortable. Rather it felt peaceful. Piccante had a moment to herself (kind of) and Ghassan had (sort of) opened up on his feelings. If anything the two found themselves shuffling closer together. It was strange. They barely knew each other. Heck, Ghassan had only shown up a few days ago. Somehow though, there was some connection. Some comfort.

Intentional or not, they refused to say. They simply returned to the den carrying eggs.

(Note: All of my nests are in use right now, so Piccante and Ghassan will go to nest tomorrow and I will update once the eggs arrive.)

Day 57
Failed recruits: 1

While the others were setting up their new-new range Arcane made herself useful (and known) by scouting the outer perimeter. Not her favourite job but hey, when you lived like this you needed to carry your weight in multiple areas.

Satisfied that it was safe the Fae turned to head back only to spot a burrow she must have flown over without realising. Poking her head inside she called, "Hello? Anyone home?" Risky perhaps, but every detail needed to be documented. Not long after her nose was filled with the scent of old leather, accompanied by the shuffling of parchment. Then a large, red Obelisk poked their head out in turn.

"Ah hello, I wasn't expecting guests all the way out here." She seemed nice so Arcane pressed on.

"Umm. Yeah. So uh, our Pack has kinda claimed the area and I was... you know, checking to see if anyone else lived here. Heh..."

The Obelisk regarded Arcane politely and patiently as the Fae fidgeted, realising she didn't know what to say. It was the Obelisk that broke the silence. "Could... I join?" she asked carefully. "I came out here to write stories in piece, but it's been rather lonely. A new clan would be nice."

"Oh, right! Yes, of course! Piccante - that's our leader - would be delighted!"

Elane joins!

6. Hunting Party. Pick two dragons at random to patrol the pack's range for trouble and supplies. Raise both of them a level. Roll a 6-sided die for each. If it’s a 1, exalt them as they were lost on the hunt.

Image Image

Ghassan seemed to be riding a high lately and Sidonia was very curious as to why. Feeling bored she followed the bigger dragon as he walked across the den site. What was his secret? Was he seeing someone? Ooooh who was it! Maybe she could... surprise them both! That sounded like fun! Especially if it was supposed to be secret.

Not that she'd tell anyone if it was secret. That's going too far. How could she pass up the opportunity though?

Hiding behind a bush Nia furrowed her brow when she caught sight of Piccante. What was their leader doing all the way out here? Shouldn't she be-- UNLESS! Was this the someone Ghassan was seeing? Wow! She'd been waiting for a chance to prank Piccante for some time, having shared ideas with Alethios before he... The Spiral took a breath. Yes, let's do this. For Thio.

Biding her time Nia watched as the two large dragons settled down. Wait for it... Wait for it...

"SURPRISE!" She launched herself out between the pair, yelling loudly enough to startle them. Which she did. Success?

...Well, yes and no. The prank worked; Piccante and Ghassan shot back at the sudden intrusion, then Piccante leapt forward and pinned the smaller dragon under a massive paw. "What the Hells are you doing?!" she hissed dangerously. Can't you see we wanted some time together?"

"Picky, let her up. You're crushing her." Ghassan coaxed, though not without his own scowl. The Imperial sighed as she relented, Nia squirming out from her grasp. "We should tell the others about this some time any way."

Tell everyone what? Bouncing up into a tree branch out of either of their reach Sidonia scanned the immediate area, then flung her hands up to her face and gasped excitedly. "An egg! Ohhh I totally get it now. I'm so sorry! I didn't know! I promise not to say anything. Before you, I mean."

Ghassan nodded while Piccante snorted in warning. Nia returned a nervous grin, waved goodbye and disappeared into the undergrowth.

Sidonia loses her extra life!

Day 58
Failed recruits: 1

"Greetings!" a voice called from a natural opening formed by trees, catching the attention of the Pack. Some looked up, some sighed, some ignored it entirely. "I, Dara, am an adventurer extraor-- oop!" A Mirror came strutting into the clearing only to trip over an errant root, sending her straight onto her face in front of everyone. Some snickered, some sighed, some turned away.

Dara, as her name apparently was, righted herself and cleared her throat. "Ahem. As I was saying, I am an adventurer extraordinaire. I have been watching you for some time and have decided to offer my services to you in your time of need!"

Several dragons exchanged confused glances while Elane began scribbling something in a notebook. Oooookay?

Dara joins, whether we like it or not!

"Adventurer, huh?" Azami snorted at the newcomer. "Could use an errand-dragon keeping us safe and gathering resources."

"Errand-dragon?!" Dara looked offended. "I'm more than an errand-dragon!"

"Prove it. I'm an ex-knight, let's see what you can do."

"Bet!"

So they bet. Azami bet Dara couldn't hold up to her claims. Dara bet that she could. Azami took the Mirror to a small hunter camp she'd seen being set up and used that as the demonstration ground. They cleared it in record time and no one was hurt.

Azami was impressed but also annoyed as she handed over 10000t.

Day 59
Failed recruits: 9

It was a relatively calm day today. That didn't stop some from being on edge after everything that had happened so far of course, so when a very bright pink Fathom wandered in she was immediately greeted by several sets of eyes.
"Um, hello?" She waved hesitantly under all the scrutiny. "I seem to be lost. I was on my way to Peywood but ended up... here?"

"Peywood's thatta way." Shimmer explained, pointing in the rough direction of said clan. "Though uh... might wanna be careful with that fur."

Ola sagged, feeling her freshly-grown pelt. "Oh. I thought Peywood was accepting."

"I mean, it might be?" The Spiral added unhelpfully. "I'll tell you who is, though!" and she gestured at the rest of the Pack.

The Fathom went silent as she considered this, then sighed. "I suppose it would be safer. Thanks for having me."

Ola joins!

14. Test Their Mettle. Raise the two youngest dragons by one level. Then exalt the youngest as they weren't strong enough.
(Oh hey, this was the last event to be rolled! I've now rolled all 20 events at least once!)

Image Image

After what had happened back in the swamp Alita was determined to get stronger. Strong enough to not let that happen again. Inviting her brother out with her she and Marshal found a good spot to spar.

"Ow! Ali, that -ack!- that hurts!" Marshal whined between blows. "Can't you -uff!- ease up just a little?"

Alita paused long enough to process her brother's words before waling on him with all she had. "No." Was the simple reply over Marshal's grunts and groans. "I. Need. To. Get. Better!"

Marshal managed to duck out from Alita's attacks and backed up to collect himself. "Yeah I know, but what's beating me up gonna do? I haven't even had a chance to strike back!"

But Alita was already advancing, her mind focused on improvement despite Marshal's pleas. Over and over she struck, lost to the idea. To her, she was back in the swamp. Being dragged down by those things. Not strong enough to break free on her own. It shamed her. She had to do better.

It was a good few minutes before she realised Marshal had gone quiet, and doubt crept into her head. Was... was he okay? Shaking her head forcefully she made herself look. Then her blood ran cold as she stared at her brother's still form. She'd completely blocked him out. Hadn't heard him. Went too hard. Deities, no! With some effort Alita gathered Marshal up and dragged him back to the den for medical aid. And a good scolding from Azami.

Marshal loses his extra life!

Day 60
Failed recruits: 3

A Bogsneak practically slid into the clan, so low did he carry himself. With beady eyes he looked around before approaching the nearest dragon, who happened to be Dara.
"I'm looking for someone in particular." He explained with a hiss. Natural, not suspicious whispering or anger. Just Bogsneak Things(TM). "An adventurer type called Dara. Heard she was headed this way."

"Well now, it's your lucky day!" The Mirror assumed a cheesy heroic stance: balancing on her hind legs with her wings spread, one paw on her chest with the other held skyward. "What can I do you for?"

Carpet is talking to Dara for some reason!
Image

Pack Limits. When the pack reaches or exceeds 20 adult members, or you run out of lair space, it becomes too much to manage. Roll 1d12 for each non-leader dragon. If it's higher than their level, exalt them. Raise all survivors by one level. Repeat if desired.
([Aralicien - 9, Thylapoint - 4, Sidonia - 8, Kindred - 11, Nifty - 7, Aleksey - 7, Nadya - 8, Ghassan - 5, Shimmer - 5, Arcane - 12, Alita - 4, Marshal - 12, Clydri - 9, Azami - 4, Jassu - 8, Elane - 3, Dara - 12, Ola - 6, Carpet - 8)

The conversation wasn't exactly subtle. Very loudly Carpet (what kind of name is that?) described how explorers had found some kind of ancient ruin and that they were looking for experienced adventurers to delve in and explore the place. Needless to say, Dara was very excited by this prospect. "Just point me in the right direction!" She beamed.

Given the loudness of their words it was difficult to ignore what transpired, and a few curious heads were turned. "I'm something of a historian!" Arcane piped up. "Well, literally something but maybe I can help identify and translate things!"

"Hired!" Dara declared.

"I'd love, love, love to see more of the dry land world!" Clydri joined in. "I do need to go home at some point but hey, might as well take advantage while I'm here!"

"Approved!" Dara confirmed.

"Uh, I don't... really want to... explore." Marshal wheezed from the medical burrow. "I just... no offence to the Pack, I kinda need a real healer. Still though... once healed I could lend some muscle?"

The Mirror rubbed her chin a moment as she considered this. "You know what, sure. If you can keep up, you can come with. If that's everyone, we're heading out! To adventure!"

And just like that, they set out. Kindred hid behind one of the remaining Guardians as he watched the procession. This would be a good chance to escape! When he thought no one was watching he slipped out to follow behind, only for said Guardian to notice him. "Hey now, aren't you a criminal?"

The Pearlcatcher sighed. "Petty theft, abducted by some crazy Wildclaw who left ages ago." He fixed her with A Look. "And that's what I'm going to do, too."

Jassu stared at him, around at the rest of the Pack, then back to... where Kindred had been. Crap! He was slinking off! Not on Jassu's watch. She bolted after him, tackling him to the ground. Kindred yelped, then bit into Jassu's arm. A small brawl broke out as the two tussled.

What just happened?

Kindred and Jassu lost their extra lives!

Day 61
Failed recruits: 19

Skin/Scene/Vista: Admiring the scenery led to a fortuitous encounter. You meet another dragon on your current hunt, and speak with them for a while. They wish to join you on your endeavours. Buy the cheapest adult dragon off the auction house and level them to 6; they automatically become part of the pack.

"I swear there never used to be this many footprints in this area."

"Maybe everyone else flew. Or floated."

"Not everyone can magically float like you can."

"Flew, then."

Aither let out a small sigh as they bickered with their companion, a solid black Arcane Undertide using her innate magic to hover over the ground. "Whatever. Point is, there's a lot more activity here now and I wanna know why."

Durga coiled restlessly next to the Tundra. "Are you worried about Elane?"

"A little." Aither shifted uncomfortably. "Mostly I just wanna know what's going on."

What was going on was, in fact, the claiming of territory and a new lycan den being set up. The pair took a turn between the bent trees and stopped short at seeing the Pack.

"...Oh." Was all Aither could manage. Then Durga spotted their Obelisk friend busy scratching away at a sheet of parchment, completely unbothered by the goings-on around her.

"So we're staying, right?"

"Might as well."

Aither and Durga join!

Ever since Dara had "hired" several members of the Pack and run off, Sidonia had been daydreaming of exploring ancient ruins. She was still rather nervous since her encounter with Daleth and the nest, too, which only fueled her desires. She found herself ranting out loud about how bored she was and how exploring could be a good thing rather than finding somewhere to settle down permanently. Sure she'd lived in the cave but everyone needed somewhere to return to after adventuring.

No one seemed keen on listening to her however, only increasing her agitation, until she found herself with the bookbinder who also liked to write. Being able to write and then make your own books. That in itself didn't impress Nia but the stories that could be told. The Spiral began talking at length about how she missed pulling pranks with Alethios, the idea of exploring and finding neat things.

What Nia didn't realise, or care about, was that Elane as too absorbed in her work to properly listen, only responding periodically with sounds of agreements or, "sounds great" or "I see". Sidonia simply kept going. Maybe she thought some of what she described could end up being included in this book. Who knows?

It wasn't until Nia actually looked over and saw that Elane had faceplanted into the unfinished book and was snoring lightly that she finally stopped. Okay, fine. This was a sign. No one was going to listen, the leader had it out for her, she was bored out of her mind... Yep, mind made up she grabbed her things and flew out in the direction the adventurers had gone. There had to be something out there for her.
