I downloaded the 7 day trial as something to do, but overall the game just didn't hold my interest. I'm not too fond of the graphics and visual style, there's something...dull and soulless about it. I felt no immersion to the world at all.

Well, it was a nice diversion for a few hours I suppose, but not something I could play for longer.

Hmm, it's just not the same. x)

Just going by your pic...

On the plus side, the graphics look super detailed.

On the down side, I'd give the character and monster design a 5/10. The toon's head is too small, and that boar looks like something that went through the teleporter and got turned inside out... blargh.

But obviously that's just one pic. With that level of detail, there's a lot of potential.

I would have been so pissed if they had made it so robes forced us to ride sideways. xD

Also, if I buy the game on Steam, will I have to open a new account or can I apply the license to the trial account? Anyone here bought on Steam? :P

I think I vaguely remember something like that... freemium mmorpg with anime toons and weapons with special sockets...?

Nah, that's not Rift. In Rift you buy a subscription, just like WoW, and that's that. No Premium accounts or such bullshit.
The toons are somewhat anime-ish, but I haven't seen any special sockets on my weapons yet (they look cool though).

Oh ok. I thought you were talking about a different game altogether (think it might be Neo Steam I was thinking of).

Neeeeevermind! :)

I have been considering trying Rift for a while but after watching several videos I had started to really changed my mind. For me, just from what I saw, it was TO MUCH like WoW even though things like world events are different. Granted this could be just from the videos I saw that gave me the opinion but the video TotalBiscut did of their "good guy" starting zone was a bore. Like worse the the tauren and belf starting zones in WoW. This sounds so bad but watching him play the zone and do the starting quests was so boring I was falling asleep.

I was also a wee bit bugged that I would seemingly have to buy the game, get an account and try to play just to get a 30 day free trial. I've yet to find a free trial anywhere else.

This is not to sound harsh Veph but that is the ugly twin or something compared to your WoW characters.

Guess Rift and I were never meant to be.

You don't socket gear in Rift, but you can dye it. :D

If I may, I would just like to make a general statement that I've noticed. Firstly I'll start by saying that I understand Rift is not going to appeal to everyone, that's the genral nature of games and such anyway. With that said, since this is obviously a very hunter oriented community I think we often get too attached to pets and stuck in what I'll call the "WoW ideal."

I won't lie, first time I tried Rift, I made a ranger and hated it because the gameplay is similar to WoW and the razorbeast you're assigned is quite the ugly brute. Then, we I retried the game, I made sure to try a totally different class. I ended up falling in love with the game.

I'm not saying this will happen to everyone, but sometimes I think trying something you won't immediately compare to WoW's hunter might allow you to view the game in its own right. If you still don't like it, then that's fine of course. I don't expect everyone to love it. :)

The Rift client is downloadable for free as soon as you pick up the free 7 day trial from their website. There's no such thing as a 30 day free trial, unless you're referring to the free month MMOs give when you buy their product, but that's not really free.

So you can dye your gear like in WAR? cool I allways liked that I collected most of them they where all named after the paint colours you use on the models.

I remember back when I played EQ back in the 90s, and you could dye your armor.

Yep, you can dye your gear. :)
Makes me happy and it's kind of a neat little gold sink, and apothecaries can make some dyes.

Sometimes when I do public events on my mage it randomly dyes all her armor the same colors as her hair. XD

Heh cool. The public quests/events in WAR could drop the rare dyes depending on how much you helped in the quest/event. Do you get dye from looting things? That made it fun it was a lucky dip thing XD

Far as I know, you buy dye from a dye vendor or an apothecary makes it. I've never seen it get looted.

Yeah, it's similar to WoW in how it plays (which I like, I don't want to have to re-learn everything all over again). I personally enjoy the graphics - on high settings, the environments where I'm at are lush and bright and pretty. I like the classes so far (I have not tried a ranger yet, I wanted to start the game with something different than what I did in WoW), it's fun to mix and match. I really enjoy the rifts and invasions. I'll be questing out in the woods and suddenly, a patrol of invaders run by. Do I continue questing, or go spank these intruders? Spank the intruders, every time. XD Mostly, what I like is that it's a change of scenery from WoW. It may play very similar and it may borrow tons of things from WoW and other MMO's, but it's still a completely different world and story from WoW. Keep in mind I had played WoW for six years. Things start to get really stale after a while. No matter what I did, no matter how many alts I created, it was still the same freaking Azeroth. Now, finally, I have something different to look at, different classes to try, and different quests and stories to explore. It's a very much-needed change of pace from the same crap I've been doing since June of 2005. :P Who knows how long I'll play it before getting bored? I don't worry about that right now, I'm just having fun with my husband and brother. Maybe I'll go back to WoW someday after I've had a long break - doubt it, though, I don't like a lot of the changes they're making to make the game more accessible ("dumbing-down").

I find my dwarf has a lot of personality, actually. She's cute and spunky! She's a tank, so she runs sword-first into an enemy, any enemy. Oh, which reminds me, elites are freaking ELITE in this game. There is no paladin soloing a group of four same-level elites. Elites will chew you up and spit you out. I love it!!!

I dunno, I was just getting incredibly bored with WoW and needed something else to do. I was able to slide comfortably into Rift, and it's different enough that I'm not getting bored...yet. :)
