The guy my room mate wanted to set me up with is... I want to say not very smart, as I know not everyone knows anything about genetics.. but.. He posted a link and was all "this is so weird but interesting" and the video is of the "electric man"... But, they make it off like the guy has some kind of "super power", and isntead, I go off about all the stuff I've been learning in genetics, about how the "not sweating" thing is actually a more well documented genetic disorder, so that can't be the cause, and how I wonder if it's some strange sex-linked genetic "disease" (because, to be honest, it looks, from his appearance, like there might be SOME other genetic abnormalities, but, it's hard to tell.. maybe the electricity DOES affect him, and has kind of "cooked"/scarred his skin, but he's simply incapable of feeling the pain), since his father and brother have it... (would make me think it has to be y-linked... but we haven't really talked much of y-linked disorders)...

And I'm bringing up a LOT of interesting points.. that my old friend would have started some serious cool discussions about. Him? "I just thought it was bizarre and have no idea why it would happen" or.. "heh" ... ... ... *bangs head on desk* He's been trying to talk to me more often too... I have no idea what his intentions are.. hah.

@crystal

I'm not entirely sure what video you're talking about, but I actually remember in school I had a teacher who's husband was an electrician and after being shocked so many times he couldn't feel anything in his finger tips :p.

Also random thoughts thread, I have not been to sleep yet, and I just found out I'm moving. And I've got roughly 2-3 days tops to get everything and be on a bus. Between the phonecalls text messages, and then having to go to the store to buy random things that I'll need I'm quit eh, frazzled. :?

Yeah, that makes sense, would probably be some nerve damage. If you search for "electric man" you should find it.. This isn't just him getting a little shocked.. this is him grabbing exposed 600V electronics, etc etc. He's from serbia I think? There's DEFINITELY some going on genetically I think. It's totally not some freak "oh, hey look, I can can shock myself a bit" (or "I can shock myself a lot cause I know the physics of it and how to make sure the current passes safely through my body without disrupting vital organs" like the one physics prof I had who was also the star of his own haloween freakshow, the Great Orbax, and yes, he had us call him Orbax even in class, heh)

Somehow he looks to be a far worse conductor than most people are (though, there could potentially be other explanations), and an absence of moisture would explain that. Which, I think, you could easily link to genetics!
Yeah, but if the sweat was the issue, then you'd expect this kind of trait to be a little more.. documented. We've been talking about some x-linked genetic disorders, and one is actually the inability to sweat. Besides, our body is still LARGELY water, which is pretty well known to be a good conductor. And is generally swarming with ions capable of carrying charges (it's how our nerves work, with ions kind of pouring in and out in kind of a chain reaction/wave type thing in order to pass on signals). Besides, the reason that electrical shock is dangerous is because of the internal travel, it messes with the signals sent by our own nerves. If it just used our sweat as a conductor, then I would imagine not as much charge would get into the body, and the vital organs.. I don't know, I haven't done too much yet on this stuff. Just know the basics of how nerves and some of this stuff works.

But yeah, the reason that I think the no sweating isn't directly linked to the electrical thing is more based on the fact that that trait is a KNOWN genetic disorder. I'm sure something like "electricity immunity" would be something that would have been discovered, and therefore more easily findable on the internet, especially considering what an interesting topic it seems to be. Also, the sweat thing is an x-linked trait (so it's passed on by the mothers X chromosome), whereas he mentions in the video that his father and brother also have this "electrical" ability, which would make me think it would be y-linked (or maybe just flat out recessive.. hard to tell without more of a family history...), as if it was x-linked, like the condition for not sweating (though, for all I know, maybe there's more than one genetic disorder which causes the body to be unable to sweat, I'll admit), then the guy would have HAD to get the trait from his mother... (as the father would have given a Y chromosome, and not an X, which means the affected X would have HAD to come from the mother...)

.... Damnit.. I want to see a pedigree now for this guy's family... <.< I want to try and track what kind of trait this might be.. >.> We've been doing a lot of pedigrees and that type of calculations in my genetics class so far...

... I'm sure I have the name of that no-sweat genetic disorder in my notes somewhere.. I'll have to look it up later...

PETCO's hiring people to train as dog trainers. Put in an application, exciting stuff. I've always loved working with animals but my experience is limited to volunteering - stables, a greyhound rescue, a parrot rescue, haven't had time to go see the pound about helping out - so it'd be nice to get a little more experience and get paid for it at the same time. I'm not expecting to hear back from them, though - trying to be as realistic as I can, but it'd be a great day-brightener.

I figure an application a day sitting out in the sun with a laptop will give me a better chance at getting out of the house and becoming a useful member of society than looking wistfully out the window. After 18 years it's kind of clicked that people can help, but the driving force behind getting 'better' has to be myself, and I think I've had enough time to mull that over.

sharks are really juicy *nod nod*

Also... I can't tell if my hand smell or not...

edit: Since my prof is just reading off his slides he's gonna post online, so I shall explain a little :D

We did our first real actual dissection today. My group got the shark :D And I was the handson person, it was kind of cool. Wasn't sure how I'd handle it, but it was pretty cool. I did it pretty well too, I think. Maybe not ideal cuts, but still pretty damn cool. We were mostly checking out the digestive and circulatory systems. Was really damn cool. They had one at the front too that the TAs did, since it looked interesting. It had a fish coming out of the mouth, and when they opened it up, there was a flounder in there, and then it was a female, so it had actually been gravid, and there were 3 tiny sharks in there (as a note, all their specimens are obtained as humanely as possible, like from population control, or stuff like that)

The following memory is brought to you by:

The partially digested fish that was in my shark's tummy :D

This one time, I was eating some chicken breast that I made. And then I burped. And then a chicken nugget fell out. The end.

(Seriously.. while thinking of my awesome dissection this memory popped into my head, and I couldn't stop laughing for like.. 10 minutes.. Outloud too, people probably thought I was mildly crazy, haha :D)

I actually did my first dissection in high school science right before lunch. Didn't bother me a bit.

Oh, I got hungry halfway through my lab. I was kind of surprised

Also.. this was a bit different than a highschool dissection. Not sure if you've done bigger ones, but this was a full 1-2 ft long shark, full of body oils still (probably at least a cup, maybe more), I was the hands on person. Had to take my dissecting scissors and cut through the mouth, down to the pectoral fins, then across the ventral surface, then had to pry it open, and kind of hold it there while checking out the rest. cutting the belly open was pretty cool too. Did you know their heart is pretty much in their chin, under the mouth area? And then there was the fish in it's stomach. It's was... mostly digested on the tail end(which was kinda curled like a seahorse), but then the skull was largely still in tact.
