Quintessence has just reported that they've replaced the old rabbit minipets (or at least the Mountain Cottontail) with the new rabbit model. This was a surprise to me as they usually leave things like that alone. But they must have decided it was time to ditch them.

So, then, all bets are off. They could well replace older hunter pet models too. I guess we'll wait and see. I don't have Alpha access to check my hunter's stable, but if only the DH starting zone is available it may not be possible to copy your characters across, yet, anyway.

I was just on, and they've also replaced all squirrels, rats/mice, eagles, and crows/ravens! They did not update old frogs, nor snakes(they even have a new snake in one of the new zones, but uses old model). So likely new eagle models and of course, the beautiful new raven. There's also several new spiders, and some other goodies. :3

Edit: Also, sadly only DH is available and char copy isn't avail either, so couldn't check anything hunter related outside of mount/companion pet models.

I don't find the basilisks as cool as I thought I would. They look kind of low texture quality, like what happens when you enlarge a minipet rather than a full-sized beast. Kind of plastic :/

Sorry. That's awful I immediately picked apart both models. I really was hoping to love both of them

Well, like Peridot said, it could be larger than it should be (which definitely looks the case) and even if it isn't, it will at least be shrunk when tamed.

This, however, does worry me. They went back and updated some older naga in Cata when the updated textures/models were released, and EVERY doom guard I've seen has the Tanaan model. I really hope this doesn't become a trend, I much prefer older models over new ones pretty often, like raptors. The Draenor wolves look amazing, but the saber teeth look wrong on the mandible and it's hard to like them. Really, really hope that they don't have an "everything must go" power trip and toss out all the old models for new.

I hope they know what they're doing then. This could definitely be a situation where they look better in motion if they've got varied expressions...

I get that Blizzard would want to ditch the low-poly graphics wherever they can...it's just....well, worrying when the changes don't seem to capture the spirit of the original pets so far. (And I said something similar about the redone faces back before WoD, so...this is becoming a pattern.)

Hoping for the best, anyway.

A number of new critter models are replacing the old ones, including rats and possibly squirrels (?). I would guess the faerie dragon is going to be as well, since it's an almost identical look. And I am wondering if the raven will be the same.

The rat I'm especially impressed with. You'd barely know it wasn't the old one, except for the fact that it's way higher quality. They really are true to the originals.

So, yeah, I would not be surprised at all if bears (and maybe even cats) are replaced with the newer models at this point. But if you're worried about your beloved pet changing looks, don't panic yet. I'm merely speculating at this point. Just don't be too shocked if it happens

Honestly, I don't mind them replacing Some old models like humanoids and critters. Especially critters as they were absolutely horrid.

But please leave our pets alone! :s Unless they could somehow update them and stay true to their old models like they've done with that rat or core hound - simple texture updates. I'd hate for the old Azeroth coyote to one day just randomly change into a draenor wolf for example.

I just don't trust Blizz to update the old models though without some drastic changes so, I just hope they'll leave them alone for the most part.

Oh man, I was so hyped to finally tame a new bear, and then...

Potential new model here, or will they just reuse a goat or ram?

(I think my post got skipped!) But yes, the raven is the same(as well as crow).

Replaced models: squirrels, rabbits, rats, mice, faerie dragons, eagles, raven/crow
New models, but not replacing: owls, whelplings, spiders

Possible! I noticed there is a shoveltusk pet, called the Son of Goredom. Grumpy little thing!

Why would the cats be replaced though? OR are we talking the battle pet cats?

We already have a number of versions of hunter pet cats-why can they not keep the old ones and add the new ones? Thats what they did in WoD with the wolves anyway?

I am looking forward to the faerie dragon update-that thing is stunning.

I think it's just a worry with them replacing models of battle pets across the board. It may not happen(and hopefully doesn't), as many hunter pets aren't that bad(as opposed to some battle pets).

Yeah, I should've mentioned that he drops a pet. It won't be the same as a tamable beast, but it might be enough for me until they're finally added in some expansion.
