Rise from the depths in with Free to Play

Well now that SWTOR IS free to play, has it got anyone else back into it?

I downloaded the client, but I found out I had to change my character's name (maybe free to play names were stricken or something?)

I think it says limit of 2 characters per server, but if I have 4 created on one server already, I wonder if i'll have to delete 2 or something (3 of the 4 are levels 1-3 so no biggie)

In the latest surveys about the biggest game failures, SWTOR makes almost everybody's top 3.

If it wasn't hyped as much I feel it would have done much better with much smaller backlash from the communities.

Plus the fact that everything was shielded under some sort of code in which you couldn't talk about Beta / show screenshots / anything at all (forgot the name for it, i think it was a couple letter acronym). I think that really hurt them in the long run.

Perhaps then they would have had more eyes and more feedback on what they were developing behind the iron curtain. Perhaps it would have not caused players (such as myself) to think that it was going to be the single greatest MMORPG in the history of man, that would cause the eventual downfall of WOW.

I really have no opinion of it, other than the Free-To-Play client launcher won't even work and that, sadly, is extrememly off-putting. In the sense that it's a small thing that would more-in-likely be fixed very easily and early and has yet to be (I say this mostly based upon the fact that I have seen multiple people with the same problem with the launch client and spanned over months, so my word is more in likely useless.)

I don't know, maybe it's just me being stupid with technology like usual, but I would for sure play the game... if it would let me play in the first place.

The gameplay is limited. I'm not entirely sure how though because I share an account with my bf. I just quest on it. I think there was something about taking longer to level up though.

I think SWTOR's big downfall was expecting people to accept 'pretty' and 'popular franchise' in place of content and playability, and being willing to pay lots just for the privilege of playing in Lucas' sandbox.

They obviously felt (at the beginning and through most of the first months of play) that people would overlook all of the flaws in the game itself just because 'OMFG STAR WARS'... but that works less on gamers than you'd think. Going F2P may save it... or it may not... it will depend entirely on whether they can actually make the thing fun and engaging instead of expecting the franchise to carry the entirety of the load.

To be honest, I was incredibly disappointed from the beginning when I saw that instead of using the -thousands- of really amazing aliens that Star Wars was known for (unlike Star Trek and their 'crustaceans on the face' aliens), that they gave you your choice of half a dozen kinds of human. Sure, some of them are funny colors, and one has spines glued to his face, but come on, seriously. No wookies, no Hutts, no whatever Watto was, no anything. Not even a 'droid' option. They even INVENTED new kinds of human instead of giving us previously-established aliens. Lame and lazy, I say.

I wanted to play a Sith Jawa myself :(

I looked up on the FTP limitations:

http://www.swtor.com/free/features

Mouse over to see limitations. I might give it a go a little bit just for the hecks of it, I did want to see through the storylines of my two characters.

Its a bit sad to see that there are only about 8 servers now on the NA side

I was thinking about trying it again, but I'm too busy with wow reps and other things going on. I wasn't too happy with the char graphics, but really liked the sith ones.

Thank you, i forgot what that thing was. I think it hurt the game more. Perhaps the creators knew that there was over-hype and so they wanted to try and keep that 'hype' artifically there?

Wow, looking at the subscriber vs. preferred vs. free to play, it seems to me that they make the game so cruddy to play for non-subscribers that you either knuckle under and buy a sub, or quit entirely. Even with a preferred status, everything is so limited! As a friend of mine said, the free-to-play is almost more like a free trial to see if you like the game enough to buy a sub.

I want to know how they decide which two characters you get to play. I still have four characters and I'm assuming I'd only be allowed to play two of them? Bleh.....this is how free to play shouldn't be in my opinion. GW2's system is much better, I think. With SWTOR going with this model, I thought my husband and I would come back with only slight restrictions. Instead, it's turned us off entirely. :|

I was a bit sad to see all the restrictions, I was even annoyed a bit when they talked about these "bonus cartel coins", then to find out in order to unlock them all I need to subscribe by December something or else I'll "lose" out on them.

I kinda wanted to get back into the game a little bit, I'm on a mmo-burnout right now though. Paying $15 would probably go wasted. Maybe I still will. I don't know.

Rhy what are the numbers like that you saw?

I wish they would just sell the game for $40 or $50 and just have it free to play (i think thats how GW2 is). Restrictions only causes player annoyance.

I'd of liked it more if it was set in the classic time line. Heck most Starwars fans would off XD
