Obviously I can't speak for Blizzard, but they didn't touch the Oil Wolves, and I don't see little aesthetic perks like this being worth their time to go in and try to fix. They are not advantageous, they are nothing like the Worgen which wasn't meant to be had. These are all tameable creatures that are meant to be so, and this adds a bit of flavor and challenge to those who like it.

If Blizzard decides to change that we're not stopping them, nor is there use in trying to keep this covered. It's out of the bag, now we can just wait and see. I don't really see these little things being an issue worthy of Blizz going to the trouble to change though.
I'm pretty sure we're not saying this needs to be hidden, as, obviously, it can't be now that it's been brought up. What we're referring to is the craze that everyone seems to being going through. If these pets were meant to keep their effects, then I imagine Blizzard would have left them there after the tame anyway. I'd hate to see these be like the ghost wolves--which were technically considered exploits. To get these tames we're having to effectively "glitch" the mobs to get their effects to stay.

Like I said, I put the effort in to get the carrion bird, but I think it'd be safe to err on the side of caution on going apeshit trying to tame all of these "special" pets. Blizzard could easily decide that this isn't the way they want pets to be and that it's a "clever use of game mechanics" aka: needs to be nerfed. Just better to be cautious I think. Just my opinion.

I DID manage to loot it while it was a pet, somehow. O_o
Does the disease cloud stay on the mob if you kill one regularly? As in, does the corpse keep the buff, or does it disappear when killed?
Dissapears when killed. :(
Ah, then yeah it won't work. :( This trick only works if the mob keeps the effect after death. Since we're killing the mob to tame it, if it dies we're going to lose the effect.

I would agree, Tyger, if I didn't suspect that Blizzard hasn't figured out a workaround to special effects disappearing from beasts due to the taming process (or ensuring that said effects are lost upon taming no matter what, for that matter). The one example I can think of where a transformation doesn't need to be griffed to be kept after taming is the Ghost Jormungar. That's because when you use Arngrim's Tooth on a Roaming Jormungar, the NPC actually despawns and is replaced with a completely different NPC. That isn't even a perfect preservation of the unique visual effect, either - the blue glow that a Disembodied Jormungar has is lost upon taming.

I understand being worried about losing these, but I think it's better to not concern yourself with 'what-ifs' and just enjoy what we have now. :)

It's impossible to tell people not to go out and tame these, and just as impossible to try to stop others from finding new creatures with this sort of effect. Once it's on the internet...there's no taking it back.

Again, I wouldn't consider these buffs and effects as exploits. An exploit, to me, is something that is completely against the game rules, or something that gives you an unfair advantage. For pets I'd say this would be for things that are definitely NOT supposed to be tamed (Garwal), a humanoid and future playable race. Think of other pet mistakes that have occurred in the past....the Ghost Wolf, the Hydra/Slime...they were not really intended to be tameable, but the only unique thing about them was their appearance. They functioned like a normal crocolisk.

These buffs and effects are also just appearances. Visuals. Not intended, but harmless really.

Once more, I can't tell you what Blizzard's thoughts are, but that would be my personal insight. If it wasn't meant to be then it wasn't meant to be, but the fire's been started and there's no putting it out now. :D

Worth mentioning as well is that, to my knowledge, no players got in trouble for taming Garwal or posting about it online. Blizzard simply did everything they could to prevent players from being able to keep a pet worgen through game mechanics rather than punishments.

First time poster long time unregistered lurker.

Great thread, I myself had thought the same thing, but have been unable to test due to Military commitments. After reading your post at work (shame on me I know but it was lunch time) I came home to try it and failed. I logged out to cook supper for the kids. When I logged back in there was another nekid hunter trying to tame the bird. I asked if “she” was a petopia fan and “she” said “MOST DEFENITLY!” However trying to tame was giving us both fits

But I got one here is what I had to do.

SS and declicking was not working with my level 80 Bow, even with a macro ONE shot was creeping in there and blowing up the bird. So after much trial and error with some older less leet weapons I ended up with a level 33 vendor trash gun. I also put on my Alliance PvP trinket just in case some horde tried to get frisky.

How I done it:
Stand one step from Tame Beast range.
Target bird
Start in game Stop Watch
Click SS
At about the 2[.8] (a guess) second mark cast Tame Beast
Spam Revive when there was just a hair of HP/Tame Cast time left.

It took MANY tries most of the time SS killed the bird. Even when the bird died at the same time it was tamed. I would see the tame/leveling up graphic, the oil would poof. Then there would be a bird in my call pet even though spamming Revive made him disappear. But in the end it worked.

I can see latency being a key factor in how many times some people have to attempt this tame. You have to be spot on. The WoW stop watch would be better if it ran to the tenth of a second.

Well good luck. I don’t suppose I will be getting a Wolf, since I have the grimtotem. Now that I have more time on my hands I will join the Hunt for these types of pets.

/tl;dr I tamed the pet….while nekid

If you're having trouble with auto shots killing your tame despite all your attempts, then you need to use the macro while moving. Movement will prevent any auto shots from firing, and gives you ample time to disable auto shot either with the macro or by hitting Escape to lose your target.

Oh, and make sure you aren't talented for Improved Serpent Sting!

I did all the moving macro stuff, IDK it just would not stop popping off.

I forgot that I did need to go BM for the tame. And I was able to get it even tho I still had the SS glyph :geek:

since these types of tames are only minor asthetics on the the pets and do not interfere with any game play, they would prob just say its a clever use of game mechanics.

That is exactly what they said about the Grimtotam, right before then said they would let it stay in game, right before the ninja removed it.

All because the needed to give player shamies the same thing NPC shamies got.

Ah ha, that's why I had to time my tame differently and also had a crit with my gear off. Just means for anyone who has this specced, you may have to begin your tame a bit earlier than Griffley's guide suggests, maybe 1/2 to 3/4 seconds.

The Grimtotem wolves aren't a great example because Blizzard is *still* running PR interference because of them. They mishandled it and have tried to do better since. The spirit hydras, slimes, and crocs were removed as well. Garwal is something else. And yet, we've kept the oil wolves. So honestly, we can only speculate at this point.

My personal feeling is that the spirity creatures and worgen were off-limits, but bonus effects on existing approved beasts should be okay. In those previous cases of pet removal, the creatures were never meant to be tamed at all. It's different.

Hey Ollof! Grats on finally getting it, yeah I gave up, but going to give it another whirl. Latency is definitely something I am thinking affects the timing on this, but so minutely that it's pretty frustrating.

Yeah I managed to pull the tame twice then immediately revive, canceled, logged out, and logged back in then revived. And each time I get just a brown hawk.
