Personally, I don't get the dislike of monthly subscriptions. I think the monthly subscription helps align the interests of the game developer with the interests of the player; the bargain is "Keep working on this game to make it better and I'll keep giving you $15 a month to do so." I like that.
Of course, the question is always "Am I getting $15 of value every month?" and I can't make that decision for everyone. Most of the time I am getting it, so I pay it. If I get bored I cancel the sub; the account will still be there if I want to return.
It's certainly a valid criticism of WoW that the high-end content, particularly PvE content, is only available for those who are able to put a HUGE time commitment into the game -- more time than is available to most people with full-time jobs who have anything else to do with their free time but play the game.
I long ago realized that there was no way in hell I could commit to a raid schedule. So all that stuff is unavailable to me. However, I PVP a lot, and that stays a lot fresher because one's opponents are human.
