I also figured that it was for digesting. Even just looking at the skeleton, it is arranged as if it was absorbed into the slime whilst it still had flesh, rather than it just being a random assortment of bones that the slime gradually gathered.

My approach has been to do a little at a time and pick and choose. I'm a die hard heroic dungeon and LFR raider, so taking my time is fine. And I take breaks from my main to play alts occasionally.
