Getting the shading right is tough. You did really well on the spikes and the bar-like scales on his neck, though! They look great! All I can suggest is trying to add a little shine to every single scale, which is a huge pain in the neck.
I tried to do these many a time before I managed to get it right once. xD

And, Moon, now I can't stop making these. Curse you and your addicting avatars!
This one looked really bad when I started, because my screenshot has it in the sun, so part of it was warmer colored. Threw me off bigtime. Adding more shading really helped, though!

Also, my dad mentioned that Camels MUST have spit. So it has a drop of spit.

Moon: I use the program that came with my Bamboo Wacom tablet, so Corel Art Essentials 4. I don't have monies on me for Photoshop, and I'll have to look up Gimp, since I've heard it mentioned occasionally.

Hmm. Never really played with it, although it sounds like it's be a more basic version of Corel painter. And if it does have the same functions as painter, then you may need to use a different tool other than the pencil. Painter and Photoshop work very differently when it comes to their tools, so you may need to use something other than the pencil.
GIMP definately has the tools you'll need, although it'll take a little while to get used to. The Pencil tool there works mmuch the same as the one in Photoshop.
Speaking of Photoshop, I was sure there was a free, bare bones version out there somewhere...

GIMP tried to eat my laptop. O_o

Okay, not really, but I can only logically download the really old, unstable version, since the stable version is too new for my really old laptop. So I'll stick with Corel and mess with different brushes some. Eventually I'll figure out some style that works.

*Nods* Shame about GIMP, but it happens alas.
I'm going to see if I can download a free trial of some sort of Corel Essentials, play around with it myself.

And it really shows off just how badly I matched the colors when I put down base color layers! xD

I really like that! It's not "exact" as in true-to-life, but your style gives him personality. Nice job!!!

Haha, thanks! I've never been real great at being "exact", even when working from references, so I ended up just scribbling it up in my own fashion and using the reference for colors more than anything.

Is interesting; I might have to try it again...
