TygerDarkstorm wrote:But what we've been trying to say is "there isn't a best pet." There are recommended pets to have, such as cats because their agility buff is absolutely the best for hunters in PvE. It just comes down to group composition. And if you don't really care about min/maxing to the teeth, it really does not matter which pet you bring. The whole thing with Cata is that you can bring whichever pet YOU like best and still do good DPS.
Yes, I agree with you, but the OP states that he IS trying to min/max, so that's the topic that I addressed. I'm not trying to argue, I just got defensive because people called me wrong without giving a valid reason.

But even min/maxing with pets these days comes down entirely based on group composition.
My personal basic lineup I would use would probably be (as mentioned before): Cat (agi buff), Wolf (crit buff), Raptor/Serpent (sunder), Ravager (physical DPS increase for melee based groups), and a Wind Serpent/Dragonhawk (increased magic damage for caster groups).

I think that's a pretty solid lineup of pets that are going to help your group without hindering your DPS. Another alternative is an interrupt pet and even keeping a tank pet on hand in case your tank is struggling. I find myself using even my devilsaur to off tank trash mobs for when a tank messes up a pull in dungeons. I'm also usually one of the first people to redirect my pet to a mob (with growl on) that's run off to go punch a healer in the face.

It just depends on exactly how you play in dungeons I guess. If you're just there to buff your own DPS and don't care about others, I'd recommend a cat, wolf, or hyena/boar.

I got the impression the OP was asking this question REGARDLESS of group composition. As in: They, alone, ignoring all group buffs or debuffs, wish to know the pet[read: buff] that will give THEM, personally, the best damage. Assuming no one else in the raid has any buffs that pets can apply, which pet is the best. I don't really know how else to put it. Personal DPS increase of the buffs... of course all buffs will give different dps benefits; not all hunter pets will give exactly +2000dps [insert random number] including buff.

And no offence intended at all but just because someone disagrees doesn't make them elitist. :( I don't think Bohic was elitist or rude or in any way out of place... I think they answered the question perfectly. But maybe that's just how I read things.

Short answer: cat
Leet answer: sporebat

I'll have to agree with bohic, some of you seems to have missed his point.

When you have no external buffs on you other those the one from your pet, you will definitely do better DPS with a cat by your side compared to a hyena (for example).

But why? Because cat's agi buff is generally better for you than the hyena's bleed dmg debuff (for MM, but this rationale works for other specs as well)

Therefore, while it is true that there are no 'best' pets under ideal raid situation, whenever there are buffs that your raid is missing, there will be some pets that are better than others.

Back to the OP, what I do with my 5 pet slots, is generally bring around a tank pet (just for the sake of soloing), a cat (although you will usually get the buff in 10 or 25man, there is still a chance that it is absent, and for those 5 mans as well), and a wolf (since the buff works for both tanks and healers as well, and is still very good to your DPS).

For the remaining 2 spots you'll have a choice, it is actually pretty simple as you can just compare your drop in DPS if you click out the particular buff/debuff ur pet can bring on a spreadsheet/femaledwarf, I believe that many others must have already performed the test but since I don't have the data in hand I'll leave the task to you. Usually for the last 2 spots you have a choice between:

- Raptor (12% armor debuff)
- Hyena (30% bleed dmg taken) - though it's been said that this debuff doesn't work on bosses
- Wind Serpent/Dragonhawk (8% spell dmg taken) - I'm not exactly sure on how important it will be to MM, since I usually run on SV, plus this one is cunning.
- Ravager (4% physical dmg taken) - it's again, cunning, but this buff is quite rare that it's pretty good as a backup in case all of the other buffs are present. (provided that you don't have an Arms War/ Combat Rogue/Frost DK)

I think everyone completely misunderstood Bohic, and there's no need to be so rude to him. He was saying (as Taaveti says) that without any buffs other than the pet's, his results were x, y and z, etc--which is probably exactly what the OP wanted to know.

Short answer: bring what the raid is missing.
Long answer: for PERSONAL dps, yes, cat, wolf, raptor and so on for the *personal* buffs, which is what both the OP and Bohic were talking about.

Why anyone had to jump down his throat for that is beyond me o.o

And when you all take an argument to him--he's completely right. Properly-specced Ferocity pets will do more than properly-specced Cunning pets will do more than properly-specced Tenacity pets. I know there's a huge "bring what you like because the difference isn't that big" faction here on Petopia, which is perfectly valid if you're top DPS anyway, but the fact remains that they are not perfectly equal, so please don't attack someone just for stating the truth simply because you don't agree with it : /

And now the rest of you are jumping down our throats for a misunderstanding. It goes both ways. I apologize for miscontruing his posts, but you guys are just as rude jumping on us right away.

Bohic, I apologize. The misunderstanding was between us, not everyone else here.

Please don't get so defensive. In no way did I personally attack/jump on you, nor did anyone else. It's really ridiculous the topic got quite so brutal. Someone replied, that reply was misinterpreted, so people backed up the original reply. Nothing nasty. :)

No worries. Glad we can all agree and offer good advice to the OP.
