If he was polite about it, then yeah, he was giving you a tip. The people who keep doing it to me--parading their show pets around while I'm camping--I really get infuriated with. It's nothing to do with elitism and everything to do with being respectful to other hunters.

I absolutely can't stand it when people name their pets after the tamed mob then parade them around their spawn points JUST to bother other hunters still camping. I had an alliance hunter do that to me while I was camping Skarr. It was unbelievably rude (to say the very least).

I don't like to have rares out in the zone I got them in either. For example, when I did my Wildhammer dailies I would take my Jadefang instead of Sambas, I would take Ghostcrawler into Deepholm instead Jadefang and I would instance with my Sambas. It's just a system of rotating that I use so that they all get some love and attention without bothering others camping

Okay. You have the right to swing your arms in circles. However, your right to swing your arms in circles ends at my face. You /can/ sit on a spawn point with your Rare named Rare, but it doesn't make you less of a buttclarinet playing a chorus of fail.

Using NPCscan, a macro, whatever, is not *lazy*. It's often the edge to even get a tame with 1-4 hunters piled on you and allows you to not go loopy just staring at tracking.

So I think you're rude to call people lazy for just using a /tar macro? Seriously? Yeah, Sarge. No.

I understand some people are unaware of the add-ons and got very, very lucky (Seriously, these days it seems like even non-hunters load the new rares into their NPCscan...) and may not be aware of the grief they're causing others, but c'mon. There is a HUGE difference between going "eee! PET!" and running around and sitting beneath the spawn point.

It's much lower maintenance, one of the easiest addons to deal with that I've used. And yes, as pointed out, it never false positives on an already-tamed...even if it's named the same and ploinked on a spawn point.

If SilverDragon truly is NPCScan without the false positives, then it seems like that's the remedy right there...

Silverdragon seems to only go off when your scroll over the target, but my setting maybe wrong.

SilverDragon doesn't always go off when a rare is up. Sometimes you have to actually mouse over whatever the rare is for it to trigger. They both have their upsides and downsides.

Sounds like something that should be fixable though. Hopefully someday the whole matter of addon scan etiquette will become moot.

The biggest drawback in my humble opinion is that you have to mouseover the rare to get the alert to pop up. If I'm mousing over the rare, odds are good I'm rocketing my poor hunter to tame it already. Or that I'm sitting and staring at the screen already intently waiting.

NPCscan is hands-off. I can go DO something instead of staring at the screen for 1, 2, 3... many hours! But I feel the convenience is a trade-off and I'll take the trouble. That said, I think no matter what you do it IS rude to just sit on a spawn point with a pet named the same thing - worse if you're pvp flagged.

Although the other hunter could have been more tactful, I do not believe he/she is in the wrong in this case. I do not see anything wrong with naming a rare spawn pet the same name as it is in the wild; however we can carry 25 pets and bringing out a sought after pet in a zone where it spawns using the same name as in the wild is a bit rude I'd have to say. Show off your shiny pets in towns or raids. No need to get other hunters' hopes up for nothing.

To be clear, I'm not talking about people who stack on campers - common sense indicates that sort of thing is rude.

I'm talking about whether addon code can be modified to prevent false positives, and so prevent camper A getting mad at daily-doer B.

This is pretty much how I look at things..whether I'm playing an Alliance hunter or a Horde hunter. If I'm in Hyjal, Magria or Terrorpene stay in the "pet bag", if I'm in Twilight, Sambas and Karoma stay hidden away. If I am in Northrend, then Gondria, Skoll, Arcturis, and Loque can't come out to play. I've been screwed by people intentionally bringing them out to mess with people before, and I guess I go out of my way to not be "that guy".

I've never understood the directly naming the pet the same name as the untamed version other than attributing it to not being able to think of a creative name. I honestly give more credit to the guys/gals who may name it roughly the same name but intentionally spell it differently..ie Lokinahak, Skole, etc...Heck, I named my Magria, Rakshibi to point tribute to him being a "ghost" version of Rak'shiri.

I would just like to clarify that SD WILL go off even if you don't mouseover the rare. You need to have your name plates up and be sitting close enough to the rares spawn for it to register the rare's name plate.

I run SilverDragon in combination with _NPCScan for the best possible chance to find a rare.

I wouldn't have necessarily tried to lecture you about it, but it definitely annoys me when people do this.

If you're in an area where a rare spawns, please have the common courtesy and respect for your fellow hunters *not* to be running around with that pet at your side, *especially* if you have named it after the rare.

There's already enough hunters intentionally griefing each other by pulling our their tamed pets by the spawn points, without someone just casually running around with theirs.

On Cenarion Circle, we've been opening tickets for people griefing other hunters this way, and GMs have been looking into it. I'd just be careful.

What Comett said on the page two, I wholeheartedly agree with. NPC-scan is not a built in addon, it's optional.
Now don't get me wrong. I'm not going to be an arse and grief around the spawn points triggering peoples' scanners (I tend to avoid going anywhere near them if I don't have to), but I'm also not planning to stop or feel guilty about questing with my favourite pets, even if they belong to the same area.
We're all very excited for our new companions, just be a good sport and don't sit on the direct spawn point with them.

I'm going to agree with erwil here, and just add that if you're feeling like going postal on someone who's minding their own business, going around doing dailies, then it's probably time to take a break from the camping: eat something, get some sleep, etc.

I always feel so bad for the other 24 pets who suddenly aren't special enough.

I've been going over NPCScan's code*, and I think I may have found out why at least some of these false positives are happening.

Will test it out as soon as I can get my mind in a somewhat more rested state...

From what I grasped, it just checks the NPC ID of all mobs being cached, and alerts when one of the rares is among them.

I imagine you'd have to add some kind of secondary check to it? Not a coder, and you're probably past this stage already, but mentioning it on the offchance it's somehow helpful >.<

Good luck, I know if you managed to make an NPC Scan codefix that made it NOT "proc" on pets, you'd be loved by half the WoW world!
