I usually go one of two extremely overused, cheesy routes:

1) Greek/Roman god (Minos, Ophion, Plutus)
2) Adjective Noun (Bronzescale, Brightpaw, Shadowfoot)

I have 2 currently going. My Nightelf has a Middle Earth places/character theme, where many lore characters and places, most of which are only known by true Tolkien fans (for instance, Hurin, and stuff from the Silmarillion).

And my Troll, who's naming/pet theme is based off of Troll lore. He is going to have every non-OL raptor skin, as well as the Non-Gem serpent skins, and maybe a few more, and they'll be named with trollish names that seem appropriate.

I think I only have like two hunters that have real naming themes. My worgen names all her pets after foods (because her name is Ruffley and I call her Ruffles). I have a night elf on Nesingwary that has an alcohol theme. My orc was naming her pets after different TV and movie characters, but some pets didn't follow that regimen. My undead has a Disney theme. My troll just names her pets whatever sounds good; sometimes they're trollish names and sometimes they're silly names.

Nice idea. You've inspired me to track down my dusty copy of the Silmarillion and have it be the next paperback I read. I've read the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, but even though I've had this for a long time, I've never gotten around to reading it until now.

I have two very unique and special naming schemes!

1.) Ask my friend.
2.) Ask the boyfriend.

1 results in food names generally* and 2 is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS Hal or Lemmy or a Street Fighter reference**. My stables are a mess. @_@

*Pickles the Zaricotl, Kiwi the Krush
** Hal the black scorpid, Lemmy the Snarler, HADOUKEN! the Skoll(caps mandatory), Shoryuken the Gondria, etc. etc.

All my molten front pets are named after names found in American Gods. I have Odin the cat, Tyr the crab, and Loki the spider. I also have a yellow and green spider, and they are twins I think. The baby siblings of Loki.

Then I named my 2 wolves Geri and Freki.

Im still working on renaming Steve, Jake, and Cody. Never let a 10 year old name your spirit beasts.

Those are Norse gods, not American as America is a mix of religious beliefs. :)

I know this...but they are all mentioned and referenced as part of the storyline in the book, American Gods, by Neil Gaiman.

Oh, derp. I didn't realize it was the title of a book. Perhaps underlining it or putting it in quotations would help? Sorry bout that.

When I do a hunter alt (if I ever need past 25 pets ... look how I manage to sound like that's in doubt!) I think I'll go for a Norse theme -- not necessarily the better-known ones. Particularly the bynames of Freyja: Gefn, Mardöll, Hörn, Sýr, etc etc.

My stable's a mix--some from foreign languages (Albus the polar bear, Kiba the wolf, Shyama the raptor, Anya the spider); some names from fantasy books (Jadis the cat, Aziraphael the windserpent), and some just because (Spike the raptor, Nancy the crocolisk).

I have a running theme to name all my Spirit Beasts with characters from the Finnish mythology Kalevala! :D

Otherwise I tend to give meaningful english words as names such as my white serpent 'Helion' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helion_(meteoroid) and my white saber 'Halcyon': " The term originates from the Greek myth of Alcyone. In popular use, it can also mean to harken back to an earlier time, remembered as idyllic." -wikipedia

Finnish words for different kinds of ice/cold/winter/snow related things are also common in my stables. ;)

For my baby hunter though.. I've been plotting to nick names from well known ships and other sea-faring vessels.

I've come up with another theme. I think I'm going to make a Goblin Hunter with a Transformers theme. Each of his pets will be named after a Transformer (from the TV/movies).

That's a fun idea :D I'm also quite fond of the food names too.
I've been going with a space-y theme myself, naming pets after nebulae, stars in their Arabic names and constellations(Helix, Zosma, Ophiuchus etc etc). Its kind of pain at times though...mostly because I'm so picky. The only pet who's not allowed a sweet serious name is Eesteedee the slime. I just can't bring myself to change his name ;)
