I hope no one here on the forums were hurt badly enough to be sent to the hospital, or anyone, for that matter. Coming from the Canadian Prairies, all we have to worry about is the rare Tornado or a huge dump of snow.

Earthquakes happen all the time all around the world. I believe most of them are very minor tremors that could barely be felt at all. =X

Fortunately, officials report there are no serious injuries or deaths from the quake, just some minor injuries. It's really unusual that the quake was felt over so large an area, though. I read somewhere that it might be because the East coast plates are older, so they might transfer energy faster. The USGS has a pretty cool site where you can submit your location and add it to their dataset to see
where people felt the quake. Just click on the "Responses" tab to see the states people are reporting in from. If you want to add your info it asks for your zipcode, though, so if you like internet anonymity then maybe just looking at the locations would suffice. =P Still, cool stuff!

As for myself, considering I got to hear how my fiance's workplace shook....and he was several stories up....I can only facepalm at the idea it "needed to be bigger". Seriously?
Well grrrrr to you too. It was a joke if you didn't get it.

The funny thing is, there is more news coverage over this then the F3
Tornado that hit southern Ontario

Hm.
They shut down my school and one other originally because they reported structure damage, and now they've just down all schools to be safe and thoroughly inspect them. I was positive I had school today, too. Never thought I could say that I got a day off for an earthquake...
And anyways, the general consensus is right--there were no major injuries and only two minor I know of specifically at the school's, one at my brother's actually. But over all, it was a pretty shocking but harmless thing.
And Adam, of course we're (well, the media) are freaking out. It's...like...that freakish cold snap of snow in Florida.

Which the same could be said for a tornado in southern Ontario. I actually haven't really heard of many that even touched down.

My first thought on hearing it was that a 5.8 might not even get me to get out of bed in California. Then I realized that it was happening to people who'd never felt one before AND people living or working in structures not built to withstand earthquakes, so I was probably being unfair ...

Oh god we are all gonna die! *panics* (now that's all out of my system..)
I didn't even hear about this until now, but I have been feeling paranoid and having this 'gut feeling' of something happening. One day it just stopped and now I hear about this! Now I understand why me and my dog have been acting *sorry for my language* bat shit crazy.
I feel bad I didn't feel anything though, I always used to sleep threw earthquakes...

Anyone else felt the aftershock last night? I did feel the small tremor last night but didn't really thought of as much until my co-worker talked about it.

Heard about it, but I was asleep. 4.8 in the same spot, more or less. They're talking more about Irene though, then the quake.

It's funny that the time it reached Ottawa, it had weakened quite abit and yet people still freaked out about it. The Ottawa Sun said "
Earthquake rocks Ottawa" I was like really ? I barely felt it...

I think that could go for the majority of Canada, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.
Pine Lake in Alberta had a devestating Tornado touch down in 2000.

Oh, I know it can happen

There was an F3 somewhere in Ontario not too long ago. Then we got a massive storm a few days ago, and so far there's 2 confirmed tornadoes from that (1 was actually kind of close to me... it ended up stopping just at the next town over... o.o Kind of scary).
