I admit it, I have a great deal of pets that are rare skins on my hunters-but more because I like the look of them better then the common skinned creatures that are similar then any attempt to be a rare hunter. For example, I have Sambas, Skarr, Eechyakee (or however you spell it), a spotted saber cat and a red lynx in my main stables. I got Sambas because I love the poofy mane, Skarr because he is my fave looking one of the hunched cats, Eechee as a nod to when my toon was a hordie, the spotted saber because I prefer him over the other saber cats and the red lynx because again, a nod to when Shade was a belf. I didn't go after Skarr because he was a rare-I just liked him better then any of the other hunched cats.
And a rare being unvalued by sharing a spawn with a common mob? I don't agree to that. I got one of the green cinderweb broodlings, named him Gizmo and am now so attached to him it is ridiculous-I don't care that he is not Kirix.
On the other hand-my main toon has had a black small wolf since she was leveled enough to tame Snarler-two years ago. He was my fave raiding pet back then-as I raided mm and he was my only non-exotic back when we could only carry five pets. I've had Hel since pretty much as long as I can remember and would never give him up. I still think of him as Snarler-he got his name for the hell he put me through taming as a lowbie-and I don't care one way or the other about the other black wolves out there making him less special. In fact I'm happy that there are low level common versions of him-every hunter I have now goes and gets a Blackrock Battle Worg as soon as they are the right level, in honor of my little black Snarler.
I have Krush, have tamed all the Spirit Beasts, and a goodly number of rare skins. I would tame them still if they were common skins, as I didn't tame them for their rarity-because like others said, you go to a city and suddenly they are not at all that rare-I tamed them for their looks. If I can find a easier to get common mob of the same skin, I'll go for it, and that doesn't make them mean any less to me.

I don't think Zivhayr was necessarily disagreeing with anyone or saying anything negative towards rares with common counterparts in general.....I think it was more of a "why do these uber-special new tames have common counterparts?" As already mentioned above, I think it was more for the challenge of the tame itself than the appearance of the beast.
Besides, it's not only thrill-seekers who might enjoy the look of these new spiders. They probably wanted to toss in some common mobs as well for those folks who either don't want to camp and experience heartbreak, or just don't have the time.

The yellow and green lava spiders are, to me, some of the coolest skins out there. If I'm on the molten front I'll swing by for a look at the rares, but I'm getting to the point where I've stopped caring so much about those guys. I've got a lot of cool pets, and I still need to clear out some of my rares to make room for other pets I'd like to try, so camping for more rares seems counter-productive. On a related point, in some cases it can be kind of a good thing that a rare pet has a common counterpart - that way you get to test drive the pet, and if the look appeals to you and you're a hunter who enjoys the thrill of a tame, then you can go after the rare of the same skin. If that makes any sense. I tamed common versions of both Anthriss and Kirix, and while I enjoyed them both, it's not terribly likely that I'd try for the rare version of either - the common ones are fine for me.

This debate has honestly gone round and round. In the end, the value of a pet is measured only by the person using it. I prefer my hat metaphor:
Some people like hats to have hats. Some people like a hat for the way it looks. And some like to show off a unique hat. Some people do all of these things. None of their hats is any more or less precious to their owners.

Where's my Applebloom gif...;P
It's circular for sure, but it's not nearly as hostile as some of the other discussions on this topic and for that, I'm proud. Good job, guys!
For the record, I'm very much in agreement with Novikova's hat
analogymetaphor. Nicely put. :)
Edit: Lolwhat, analogy? No, self.

I agree that whether it's a rare or common it's up to the hunter to have the value. On my alliance main I have one of the most common skinned hyenas ever but Snort the Heckler is who she tamed. Yeah there are hundreds of other purple skin hyenas in game but he was "the one" for me. It makes him no less valuable or unloved.
On the same token I have very much loved pets that are the common skin that do have a rare model. But I chose the common. To each his/her own.

*dives to the bunkers in preparation for the hellfire*
I have to disagree on the appearance /rare aspect of the pets as i along with other enjoy a challenge tame (i mean true challenge). Rares should stay and remain just that, RARES, regardless of how many may have it. To me it shows someone who is willing to put up with other campers, griefers and the whole stinkin lot of humans out there to get it. It makes me start up a conversation with a ./highfive and 'how did your tame go'? To my pleasure i have gotten in game friends on that initial, tenative contact and now we keep an eye out for each other or peeps we know of looking for said rares. It was so much nicer when they kept their rare tags when they were moused over, or the only one in game, spawned by opposing faction or quest. Or even 2 in game with the same skin but were both rares. And even... dare i say it ... *holds up arm defensively to shield herself*... even unintentional 'bugged' pets that become permanently irrevocably retired and that have become someones treasured and exciting find, not just something that is easily found.
I miss my rare tags and old time special abilities on pets.

My Mazz STILL gets me a lot of comments, regardless of the common spawns. I don't wantt he comments, or the fawning. I just love my bird. A lot. Toph's love for Hawkbane is exactly what I have for my bird, he was my 2nd tame at the ripe old level of.. 10 (I had a boar, but then my bf goes "lol flamingo?" and took me to get him). He's never left my stable and never will.
I don't love him for his looks or for the attention, he never was and still isn't a "trophy". He's my friend. A pet paraded around like some kind of medal seems so ... cold. Like the pet is about as meaningful to you as furniture unless he gets you comments. A rare skin doesn't make a hunter any better than a hunter with a common skin.
And I'll elaborate on what crystalkitten said; My green OL raptor is my "Oh crap rare someone needs to go afk a sec... Raptor! Go back to OL, I'll brb!" And I tame the exact same green raptor, from the exact same spot. And Gil is my favourite raptor, even if he isn't rare. He's mine.

Glad to see I'm not the only one

Haha. I'll admit I felt a LITTLE absurd insisting on getting the same one... But... THAT was Nine.. >.> Not the one that was closer to where I landed...

And I thought I was the only one who did that too. When I was trying out different ravagers to see which I liked best, I ended up retaming the same one three times.

Not gonna lie. That blue spider is rockin'.
That said, I am against pets with unique abilities being rares because those of us who played hunters in Vanilla might remember everyone scrambling for Broken Tooth, Lupos and all that.
