I doubt it... nothing is 'forced' in this game when it comes to a paying party vs. a paying party. You do realize that you can contact a GM and ask for a specific name to be released if the player with the name is not playing that game (either by subscription cancellation or they have been gone for awhile). I have done this MANY times and was able to acquire names that I couldn't get before I talked to a GM. Just be courteous when asking to see if the names can be unlocked... and give the GM several names you would like to try and put them in order of you favorite to least favorite.
Sometimes you'll get a name unlocked and sometimesyou won't, but it doesn't hurt to try.... just don't badger the GM.
And for goodness sake... DO NOT OPEN A TICKET. Email the Blizzard's GM email address and ask... your question/answer will get answered a LOT quicker than waiting 4-5 days for the ticket to be escalated.

I never understood the long wait for tickets. I always had mine answered in a few hours. Guess it depends on the realm?

I think it really depends on the realm, and what sort the ticket is pertaining to.

Yeah, same. I have tried to steer away from accents, but some names are just too good not to use.

It was a ticket to try to get a name released and got an answer in about 3 hours. But try emailing if your realm has a long ticket wait.

Im not too happy, I have 3 toons that I had to use Special characters to make. =/ Just gives everyone more options. Some sites let you use dashes and numbers or lower/uppercase letters so to some existent you can get that name you "really" want. I always figured that since blizz didn’t allow that, the special characters were their way of giving the players more options/creativity on the name they wanted. To others the special character may honestly be needed for the proper spelling of the name they want. Sometimes the name is rather silly when you know what that character actually means but we all know what the pronunciation was intended to be by the player who made it. I don’t get why after all this time blizz has decided to just take that away.
Oh well, at least I was able to snag Chimera, Demos and Rem before it became impossible. >.<

What an interesting change! I'm not really here nor there with it, but I do hope it doesn't affect pets (where would I be without Göögle, my Chromaggus - get it?

My realm is excluded from the change, but it would be interesting to see the reasoning behind this. Oh well.

As I said, the only problem I see with this change is that we - Quebecers - normally use accented letters when we write, and we play on North American servers.
This would mean that none of the French-speaking players, nor their guilds, would be able to use characters that are a normal part of their language without switching to EU servers?

One guy on my server used to get so mad when I insisted on calling him Fassulous.
I've also laughed at Ssloodbath, and Ssadass.
Really, whenever you see a schloss, try pronouncing it out loud with the 'ss' in place. It's usually good for a laugh.
I'm a little sad they aren't forcing a namechange on all the people with names full of letter candy but eeeh what can you do. Frankly, if a name is taken, think up a new one, imo.
We used to have a 'Fassulous' on Argent Dawn. I wonder if it's the same one.
I've seen people argue that the ß was a capital beta or something like that. It'll always be a schloss to me, though.

Isn't that character called an
Eszett?
Anyway, that was what we were taught in German class.
Schloss is "castle" no?
and I totally LOVE talking to people who use that character, and using "SS" on purpose to screw up their names.

I do actually have one toon that has accent on it and that would be my shaman, Môonfeather. I actually kind of wish I had switched the the first o. A month after I got her to level 80, the name with the accent was free again. I kept it because I didn't want to reroll and I wasn't going to pay 10$ just to change ONE letter. It seems there is a level one Night Elf with the name now. xX;

It's fucking annoying trying to type out a person's name with a special character.

The ß is generally called the Eszett and basically comes from the old-fashioned long s (the thing that looks like a 'f' connected in a ligature to a lower-case s or z after it. Not a 'B' at all, but its most common form looks like a Greek beta, which in turn looks like a B.

I wonder, does this mean I could make a toon called "Aßhole" and no one would actually understand?

Probably a couple percent of US players would understand. The situation would be different on an EU server

Or try doing that when you have to whisper the guy quickly to get into a raid... or when you see the guy and maybe say hes on a TLPD and flies out storm peaks you remember the name but he has alt characters then your screwed thinking if he just got it or had it a long time ago cause you dont know what exact alt char it was..
