Moar chicken pictures!

Image

Frida Kahlo, one chicken in two pieces. Oh, I don't think I mentioned getting them. They're new. >.> They're super cute, too- they like to stick their tails straight up, like wrens.

Image

Emeriss and Elliot, again. Flooooof.

Image

Java! She's gotten so pretty, and very friendly. She likes to jump up on our laps and "talk" to us; she's the most vocal of our birds. Whenever she's near, she'll mutter and whistle.

And updates: We had to give away Duck, who turned out to be a male. He was given to the manager of a nearby Soldan's, who happened to have a farm that needed another cockerel. ^.^ We got another Black Jersey Giant who is still tiny, named Golduck.

The two Black Marans both turned out male, and we sold them both. Beverly, unfortunately, also turned out male, and was sold.

Two Welsummer chicks have joined the flock, plus two Isa Browns and four Light Sussex. At least one of the Sussex is male. …Oh and we got a Polish. He's the most fugly little monster in the world. Good gods, he's ugly. Pictures to come.

Not yet I'm afraid, Cow. They're too young, yet. Our oldest ones are only around two months.

Anyway, more pictures! They got moved out to the big coop at last.

Image

Half of the coop. It's a very large coop. >.> Some new faces in that pack.

Image

Batman! One of our Isa Brown chicks. She'll be a big time egg layer when she gets older. For now, she's a scamp. Incredibly active.

Image

Robin, our Polish. He/she is… Not pretty at the moment. We have no idea what color he'll turn out to be, either.

Image

Welsummer chick, one of our two. They're so tiny and fuzzy.

Image

Golduck! It's hard to imagine he'll turn into… Well, this.

Finally, more pictures! The chickens have grown. A lot. xD

Remember Mort, and how pathetic he looked? Well, he grew. A lot. He's one of our favorites roosters. Silkies are supposed to be very all-over fluffy… he's not. He's just kind of ugly. We love him. <3

Image

So the four "Light Sussex" ended up being two Light Sussex and two Coronation Sussex, which look similar but have grey necks instead of black. I won't complain; Coronation Sussex are very rare and expensive, but we got them for free. Anyway, one of our Lights ended up male. Caesar is the best. He's going to end up HUGE and FLUFFY.

Image

Cleopatra is our other Light Sussex, on the left. For comparison, there's Mary, one of our Coronation Sussex.

Image

Batman has really grown. She has the smoothest feathers ever. <3 Oh, I mentioned getting two Isa Browns… I lied. One was sold as an Isa Brown but turned out to be an Easter Egger. Anyway, Batman, and also a background Caesar.

Image

Umbra isn't a very well bred chicken, we think. She's supposed to be a Silver Laced Wyandotte but her lacing, the black borders on her feathers, are way too thick. Oh well, we still love her.

Image

VLAD! He's one of my favorites. We named him Vlad the Impaler because when he was a chick, he was so unbearably cute that he needed an evil name. Well… It was accurate. He pecks like no other. He likes to sit on my lap and pull at the loose strings on my pants.

Image

Frida Kahlo have gotten so spotty and friendly! They're constantly on our shoulders or laps. They're also still one chicken in two bodies, always together.

Image

Hopefully i can get pictures of the others soon.

Okay I swear these are (maybe) the last ones. Totally.

So my mom bought Cream Legbars. They're a new breed with fancy blue eggs, and are *quite* expensive. Not as bad as some, but they're still $50 for about a dozen eggs. That would be fine… Except the eggs aren't exactly high on the hatching rate scale.

We got two dozen eggs. We got three chicks.

We were lucky in one sense though. We got one roo and two hens, and the seller decided that the hatching rate was just unfair and sent us 6 more eggs. Hopefully we get another hen. I'm already worried about our getting another roo- we already have three! Admittedly, there have been absolutely no fights, which is very unusual, especially with such a mixed flock. I mean, our "top" chicken is a hen, which is already uncommon. And the top rooster is a dorky little white silkie, typically birds expected to be bullied.

ANYWAY. Have some pictures.

Image

James, the roo. He'll grow up into this lovely creature. Hopefully he's nice so we can keep him.

Image

And…

Image

James's butt, Joan, and Jett. Joan and Jett are the two hens, as can be seen by their coloration. They'll be growing up into far less flashy birds.

More chicken pictures. Plus an update- Java is a wonder hen. O.o She's not a heavy-laying breed, she's a Dark Cornish. They're meat birds, bred to be thick and, well, meaty. They also mature quickly, but due to her not being a special hybrid, she doesn't mature as quickly as, say, Isa Browns, which are hybrids bred just for the eggs. But Java, ignoring her breed, lays an egg a day without fail. Even more odd, she's way too young to lay, as most hens start at six months and she's only four months old.
Weird bird. We love her. xD

Anyway chickens.

Image
Mort is a favorite because he's so confused. We're pretty sure he's bi, and he likes to apparently try to lay eggs, as he digs little nests and lays down in them in the same posture that Java does. Of course, his attempts to lay eggs work out about as well as his attempts to woo the hens. Miserable failure. We keep a spraybottle around to squirt him when he gets too insistent with the hens, he tends to pull out feathers, not good. We love him anyway.

Image
Umbra is so pretty. <3 She's not laying yet but she's even younger than Java. She has a really deep voice, which is quite funny to listen to. (All chicken noises are funny. They don't "cluck". I've heard about six clucks in the entire time we've had them. They do "Chuck", "Vuck-vuck", whistle, purr, make deranged tallstrider noises, shriek, mutter, and grumble, though. And of course, the roosters crow. They haven't quite mastered that art yet.

Image
No, this isn't what chickens look like when they mate. Roosters just kind of sit on top of the hen's back for about three seconds and then somehow they've achieved mating. This is a dust bath. Apparently Emeriss (left) and Java decided that that particular spot was a good one. It's so funny to see them shake out their feathers after a bath, the cloud of dust is incredible. And they look so zen while they're bathing.

The chicks are growing up well. James, the roo, is a teeny bit psychotic… We think he's so inbred that his brain suffered for it. But they're doing well. Depending on our luck, we might have a few more (think one or maybe two) Cream Legbars hatching soon. If so we'll also be buying a single Lavender Americauna hen to complete our collection of colors- we have black, we have white, we have all ranges of brown, we have barred and spotted, but we don't have lavender. Just our luck that the hatcher we go to is currently breeding them! (Of course they're also rare and therefor expensive. >.>)

That black one is really pretty <3

I love watching birds dust bath. I can see sparrows do it from my bedroom. Well when the cats are inside of course
