I think this is a really bad decision. Whatever small benefits it might have are not worth losing the entire social aspect of pet-trading.

My view is that you catching the pet yourself is all part of the fun rather then buying them all , also didnt think it would be about money making via trading and more just about something fun to do. I do see that people want to trade however so why not just make the sign up pet battle thing have a tab for pet trading with a list of people who want to trade whichever pet with whichever other pet, you meet in battle check other person's pet if want to trade push button and your done.

Yes, pet-for-pet trading would be a nice thing to have, for those that for irl reasons can't be online at times when that one rare they omghowmuchwant spawns, for example. And as this is the aspect I care the most in pet-trading, I'd gladly take this option istead of pet-at-AH thing.
