Well so far my favourites are:
My Terrorpene, which I named Grumpy originally, but I renamed him. I had had a black shelled turtle named Sheldon with me as my tank for about 40 levels and I missed him after letting him go upon getting Terrorpene. So I renamed Grumpy to Sheldon (lol Hilde!), justifying it as an evolution and a slight accident with some burning tar
My other main favourite is Frankie, my black skinned Devilsaur. He's just so dopey and lolloping the way he runs about with his mouth half open. He is dumb as a bag of kettles, and will stand there while I'm getting attacked at range and just grin at the mobs until I actually order him to attack. Love him
I have a purple shale spider named Arachnacite that I also love, and normally being scared of spiders I was glad Blizz put some into the game that weren't icky
Finally I have a white warpie named TippX (white, splodgy and makes things disappear) that I used while levelling through Outland who will remain with me for quite a while.
Having hit 85 last night (yay! - going for Jadefang tonight!), I'm now concentrating on picking up Loque, Skoll and Krush, as well as Sambas and Madexx, before moving onto the Molten Front rares

And within 30 seconds of entering Sholazar today after work I got my hands on Loque!
I've named him Souleater, and we're going to be very very happy together

My King Krush, Gyro (a username my boyfriend uses (who is pretty much my common law husband at this point lol )), quickly became my BFF. Totally unexpected.

90% of the time? Crisis, my Skarr, is my beloved pet when it comes to most everything. Ever since WotLK hit and I saw that model, I wanted... had to have it. But, of course, you can't tame something that you turn into. I was so stoked when they finally released Skarr as a pet, but my hunter wouldn't be among the first to have one. Patience was the key. That, and reading. A lot of reading. I learned how to get by the flames so I didn't have to wait to unlock anything.
Drama, my Skoll, is also a wonderful pet who I leveled from 80 to 85 with. Once I hit level for any of the spirit beasts, I went and looked for them. Only Skoll made his appearance to my second hunter (where as Destiny the Gondria appeared to my first hunter, and is my second hunter's Gondria is named after that fateful encounter). I think one of the things I adore Drama for most, apart from being blue and having lightning, is the fact that it's one of the spirit beasts I dislike most. I hate... absolutely hate Northrend worg... things. But it was still a complete blast leveling with Drama. Mostly because the name inspired a lot of Alliance to gank me. Self fulfilling prophecies and all of that.
From the past, my Ghost Saber and Humar are also large favorites. They got me into so much trouble leveling back in the old days. When I had no clue as to what I was doing and their dark (or translucent) pelts would make them fade into the darkness of a dungeon and they would come back with a good dozen or so friends. Not to mention an incident where I tried to release my beloved Ghost Saber in BC... a bunch of friends gathered around because I missed it so much... and took us on multiple runs of Slabs to level my pet back up. :3
Those are only a few of my pets. xD

WOW
Talk about a lucky few hours:
First it was Loque, then came Jadefang, then Madexx (bronze), then Sambas!

I'm off to see if I can tame the Lich King as well at this rate

But seriously, congratulations!

And you can now add King Krush to that list as well
I would've had Skitterflame too, but I accidently threw down one more freezing trap than I needed, and killed him ;(

So with those 5 in the stable in one great night of hunting, I only need Skoll, Skarr and Chromaggus and I think I've got everyone I wanted until Mists

Well for Deathly, I would have to say that the one pet she really bonded with (that wasn't named after a video game character *coughs*) would have to be her crocoslime, Squelch.
Not only is he no longer available to those who don't already have him (and on my server, he is quite the attention whore) but he is a damn good tank and his name is just adorable to boot.

My favorite pet is my brown Northrend worg Riku. Back in WotLK, I had a cat I had been using since lvl 13, but every hunter in my guild kept saying "get a wolf! they're OP and will do a bajillion deeps, blah, blah" and so I finally caved and tamed a wolf. I tamed the worg in Icecrown that changed colors so I wouldn't have to level a new pet to 80. But after running around with him for a while, I really loved when he would pop up in the dark brown color. So I ended up going to Howling Fjord and taming Bjomolf. I named him Crash at first for some unknown reason, but my friends would tease me about his name. So I got a certificate of ownership and changed his name to Riku after my favorite video game character. And Riku has been by my side ever since. I took him with me to every instance and every raid. I even leveled with him from 80-85 and plan to do the same thing once MoP comes out. I love my wolf to death and he's the one pet I will never ever EVER get rid of.

I know it's expected of me to say Bliss and tell some awesome story of her silly antics, but that's only partially true. While she IS a very common pet of mine to use, her "personality" makes her a bit difficult to rely on in group settings. In light of that, I was starting to get into an intense pvp phase and decided to get a chimera. It had to be rare and match my pvp gear. Just sayin'.
Nykwil, my beautiful purple chimera, quickly became glued to my side. So much, in fact, that I became focus fired as soon as the enemy saw him gliding into the fray.
I began to become quite skilled at sending in Nykwil and finding sniper spots that could somewhat hide me or otherwise make it difficult to get to me. Though, that didn't always help much!
After a while, I went out world pvping for no reason and I received a tell.
"Hey! Sorry I killed you! I didn't notice Nykwil until after your death and apologize."
"Who... who are you?"
>.> After that moment, I decided to change to Bliss for the bgs, and saw much greater survivability! Well, at least I wasn't being focus fired down INSTANTLY. Intrigued, I'd bring out Nykwil and BAM! Focus fired down into the snow.
Fortunately, I took a long break and now the pvpers have forgotten about it. WHEW!
However, I found myself using Nykwil in dungeons more, for the tracking AOE. Indeed, in Raid Finder, I would find myself heaving a giant sigh and bringing out Nykwil more often than not. Given the battlegroup is small, eventually people (once again) started recognizing me through Nykwil.
Guildies began asking me how Nykwil was, and of course they'd get an appropriately RP answer!
And then it dawned on me! Nykwil was "The One". He fit my play-style so perfectly that it felt like we were a single unit. In fact, I find myself getting frustrated with other pets purely b/c my style matches Nykwil so well. With that, I'm absolutely THRILLED to see him go ferocity in MoP.
Bliss, though, don't get me wrong, is ALWAYS by my side when Nykwil is resting from working. That's about all she's good for.
So, basically, Bliss is my main RP pet due to her unintended personality, and Nykwil is my main GOTTAKILLSTUFF pet!

Now I've got my stable complete, when I am in Org or out levelling up my skinning, I tend to hang out with Jury, my Chromaggus (he is GORGEOUS)
When I'm in a dungeon or other group scenario, I tend to use Souleater, my Loque for deeps.
And when soloing content I use Sheldon, my Terrorpene.

I never even had a hunter until I happened to be browsing Petopia around the time of WoTLK's release and saw the pictures of the golden eagles. I was stunned. My favorite animal (tied with the common raven) was becoming a pet model? That's when I knew it was time to make my hunter. The scientific name of the golden eagle is Aquila Chrysaetos... and so Aquillian was born and set out to level until I could tame my Chrysaetos!
The moment I reached the right level I made my way to the Howling Fjord and tamed her. She was my constant companion for *everything* - leveling, dungeons, PVP, whatever I did. Unfortunately, though, I eventually became enamored of Loque'Nahak... and I already had another rare pet in my stables. Not to mention I had a solid weekly raid group and had to keep a viable raiding pet. So Chrysaetos had to take a vacation. I was pretty heartbroken, but I couldn't let my rarespawns go, or forego having a good DPS pet. Plus, she was so fragile, as a cunning pet.
Eventually, I began raiding on my Druid and my hunter became my "everything other than raiding main" - which she still is. The raid pet was released and after a great deal of deliberation, Chrysaetos returned. Then stables got extended - awesome!
I use almost all of my pets often but Chrysaetos will forever be my favorite and most iconic pet. I already plan to level with her again, come Mists. And now that I can choose her spec it's likely she'll never leave my active five again :)

Still filling the stables
Yesterday I picked up: Magria, Ankh, Karkin and Ghostcrawler.
I also picked up, prior to the patch, the following colour changers:
Borer Beetle from BRD, Sentry Worg from Icecrown and a cranky looking Crab from Vashjir
Gonna have to stop now, as I only have 4 slots free now
Chromaggus has pretty much become my signature pet now tbh, and now I can spec him any way, I'll probably go tame another one and switch between the two I will have for tanking and dps

On Hazzal (my current main) I'm not sure I have a "One". I have Scarr (named Psilomelane) who is at my side whenever a cat is needed. The closest thing I have to "the One" is definitely Gezzarak the Huntress. I loved her since I first saw her in BC. As soon as she became tamable I snagged her. Now she is my go-to tank (and with current changes to pet specs she will be a go-to everything). She is always with me.
On Itukka there is no doubt who my One is: Humar. Waaay back ye olden days I tamed Humar when I was finally his level. He killed me at the very second the tame went off and when I came back to life I thought I'd lost him. Then I called my pet and there he was! He was my primary pet from that point forward. Even when Pitch was released, I kept Humar. I grinded his levels at my side.
On Itukka pets may come and go but Humar is never leaving.

Dulcinea is my number one! She was a random whim tame in Winterspring while lvl'ing. Once I tamed her I couldn't get enough of her and we just clicked. Somehow I just knew! Even now I always love having her out with me and I never get tired of her. I have lots of pets that are very special to me and I could never part with but Dulcinea is my "one".

EDIT**
thought I'd post a pic of my new best friend and his baby...

For me it's difficult to be absolutely certain I've got my "one". I use survival for raids so can't use my favourite pet over all which is my Loki who was once known as Skoll.
When I camped Skoll he took longest out of the 4 Northrend Spirits to find and I just adored his look. A solid bodied beast with glowing flashy bits!! I took months to give him his name though. I refused to name him until the perfect one fitted him. Oddly though the name I gave him was kicking around in my head since the moment I tamed him, but at the time it was "Loken" I was thinking of and as much as I liked the name, I hated the character in the WoW lore. Eventually I realised that whenever I was thinking of my Skoll I kept referring to him as "Loki" and so I eventually put the name to him. He's my main go to spirit beast, rarely leaves my call list but as I said he gets replaced by my Survival pets quite often and even when I do use BM for raiding I find my Devilsaur Dodgson makes me do more dps so he is picked over Loki. :/ All the other times though I send him out and even my guildies have mentioned that I seem to miss using him after they asked me to go surv to help the raid progress. The loss of his presence I feel and express must be quite noticeable! :p
Ghostcrawler is another one which I just can't EVER abandon. I tamed him on a whim really because I was camping Poseidus and was bored. Originally named "Minerals" when my fiance was playing SC2 I changed it to "Tachikoma" almost right afterwards. This change of name really solidified a bond I did not expect to have with the little crab spirit. I was watching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone complex and was totally in love with the robots in it, called Tachikoma. When I tamed my crab I thought he looked like a Tachikoma with his blue colour and 4 legs. Then the whole "Ghost" part of the show's title and a major theme in the series hit me and it was just PERFECT. If you don't know the "Ghost" refers to the soul of a person and can be put into any sort of mechanical body ie the "Shell". To me anyway it just made the pet the most awesome thing ever! He got loads of use in dungeons too with his ferocity! The fact that he is completely silent makes him more attractive too.
There's also my purple fire spider named Ungoliant who whenever is out next to me I just feel complete. But as a cunning pet she never sees use and I always seem to swap all my pets around these days.
At this moment I am sitting with my new basilisk and will rotate between it, my saddled raptor and Black stalker, purely to show off for a while. Then I'll be taming and using new pretty things in Pandaria. I tamed a black wolf when I went survival and I am attached to him aswell and sees use a lot. However I will always go back to my favourite call pet list which contains the pets I mentioned above. They might not always see use but they are well loved and and won't be released.
Out of them all I really do see myself gravitate back to Loki the most. Perhaps my spider if she wasn't cunning or her name so long.
Oh and as for my Belf alt hunter she has 2. A diseased hawk from the quest in Western Plaguelands called Tengu and Duskstalker named Kaguya. After reading here about a horde player who travelled to Teldrassil to tame Duskstalker I decided to try it for myself and I have been super attached to her ever since. <3 Tengu was also a surprising instant hit. I love having him out!

My favorite on my main is my turtle, TMNTank. However, as you can see, it has a silly (clever?) name, not really an RP bond name. I have the unfortunate hangup on naming toons with puns or non serious names (Eggsaladin, Gardetto, Beefgrip, Humanatee etc) so it is hard to establish bonds or feel like they are real characters.
And I have a hard time imagining a turtle being a good pet in any kind of fiction. Sure, in game, it is as fast as a cat and as damaging, but in "real life" or fiction, it would be slow and fairly harmless. It is a suspension of disbelief I haven't been able to accomplish.
I want to bond with a devilsaur, and for a while King Mosh was something of a legend to me due to how rare and strong he was. In a similar way, I considered Grunted a myth, and have tamed and named them accordingly.
I don't have "the one" on any of my hunters. Not yet. I want to though.

Vephriel wrote:I know not everyone puts so much emotional weight behind their pets, but I really love the depth it adds. I love the comparison to a favorite character from a novel. That's brilliant! And so true!
