This solution doesn't make any sense, since lowbies SHOULD be killing these rares to help them level. But for high level players to sit around camping exclusively to grief? That's just silly.

I can see the logic in both your posts, so, Remake Flare as a level 10 ability and redo tameable rares so that they are flare-only.
That way you can still find your untameable rares to kill for a little boost however hunters don't lose their rares, but there is a problem...
Hunters are the ones doing this. Flare-only would be useless in this situation.

There is a toon (Troll hunter, previously a human Hunter, probally race changed) from Veknilash server keeps killing Acroniss(rare serpent with unique skin) when it spawns even though she has tamed it, thus preventing every other hunter who had been camping it for weeks from taming it.
I think making a rule would be better, that killing a pet while in the process of taming would be considered griefing and a suspendable offense.

That doesn't make any sense either, since not all characters that are leveling are hunters.

Back to my idea... if a hunter is already channeling a tame, wouldn't you consider it fair to just tip your hat and go? or wait your turn? Not rush in just to ruin that hunters tame?
Flare-only clearly has flaws, cause hunters can cause problems amongst other hunters, I understand if you can call it 'competition' but there is a point where you draw the line, this botting for example.

I think it would be easier just to change the spell Tame Beast, my idea was that if a hunter used it on a tamable beast, said beast would be tagged and stunned (or not break concentration on that Hunter) that way only someone who was a griefer would want to kill the beast after a tame began and thus can be reported as such. Can't really do anything if someone kills/tames it before you get there though.

Wait a month, and tame the pets with no problems.

mobs should be un-killable while in the process of being tamed.

This is the wisest course of action, in all honesty.

I agree with this, overall.

I agree that would be nice but someone with a taunt would still be able to break the tame then kill them.

But you shouldn't HAVE TO. I do agree that waiting is sometimes the best course of action, but having to to avoid this kind of behavior should not be. Unfortunately it is a reality as there are plenty of people out there willing to ruin others day for their own enjoyment.
Sorry to derail into this but:
As for the ideas of how to help prevent it. It is a shame it took them this long to implement a system for Hunters to live almost worry free with taming new rares, but a very nice addition that many are thankful for. If only they could take that last step to fix tames prior to Pandaria. Maybe if there were a way to make the Tame Beast ability "claim" a mob and make it a friendly NPC(green name to both factions) while the tame is in process. I'm not sure if this would be possible as I'm sure it would include a lot of programming to prevent it itself from interrupting the tame when it shifts to friendly NPC. This would prevent any grief killing as it would appear friendly to everyone. Unfortunately, it doesn't stop Hunters from "stealing" from other Hunters in the sense that they can still be an annoyance by camping on you and happening to get the tame off before you. It, however, would prevent any other forms of griefing/mid-tame stealing that I can think of.
It also makes sense. You're taming a beast. Calming a wild animal and coercing it into being your friend, your ally. Well, the immediate shift to friendly NPC while it's still attacking you doesn't fit exactly, but the overall idea works for me atleast.
To go one step further, maybe Tame Beast could have a debuff added to the beast it is being used on. A debuff such as, "focusing solely on the target trying to tame it" meaning that nothing, outside of the beast itself, can break the channel. This wouldn't stop grief killing however, but would be a nice addition with the "friendly NPC" idea to double up on preventive measures.
Anywho, must go or I'd babble on more. I'm sure I have flaws in my quickly tossed together post, so sorry if I do ahead of time. Just an idea.

Waiting is a logical choice regardless of whether there are griefers or not. There is a LOT of competition for certain rares (which has been documented on the forum repeatedly in every patch that's added new rare beasts to tame) and there's absolutely no shame in avoiding the rush of fellow tamers.
The faster the rush dies off, the more quickly the griefers killing rares just to see others suffer will get bored and move on to something else. If someone kills a tameable rare and no hunter's around to see it, does it still cause angst?

That's why I waited a few weeks before getting Acroniss.

I have seen this hunter. They may be bottish, but they are NOT totally bot...
I was there waiting, and this serial hunter sure enough popped in. I waved, then warned them, knowing their reputation. A fellow hunter with me that had an alliance toon switched over to warn them that I was intending to report AND call Blizzard on them if they killed the serpent.
I kid you not. They called in the goblin mafia.
Two gobbies, non-hunter and from the same realm, popped in to threaten and antagonize us at that point. They tried to argue it eas red, it was dead and it couldn't be reported. I informed them it could if you killed it while being tamed. That that was griefing. I left it at that and eventually I just left.
Later, that hunter did not pop in, but a nelf perched exactly in the same manner and realm did... But they did not interfere with my tame.
At the point of my story I PERSONALLY know the serial killing had been going on for three days pretty much straight.
I think Blizz does need to do something to protect tames, I think the idea of the rare being protected under the tame beast spell would do very nicely, and a 'quickreport' button for rarekillers perhaps.

LoL, the advise here, i can describe it but peeps will get mad. There is a work around everything, use your imagination! Here are your choices:
(1) wait a month (BORING), why would you people even suggest this? Its wow! I WANT IT NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW!
(2) Gank em? Why not gank him? ...or are you on a pve server...BORING!
(3) (this is the real answer) ...make some friends on other servers that do not share the CRZ with you. Get them to invite you, and go to that CRZ and tame away! Find one with low population.
Sadly i use to use the BZ pve Goldrinn to do stuff like this but mr.blizzard decided because there is a 3+ hour time difference we are no longer allowed to play together since 5.1.
When i look for pets (or battle pets) I hop between 5-6 different CRZ. Just make sure the other person invites first. If you dont shift, its b/c f the new hidden changes to CRZ in 5.1. (Like not being able to go to the BZ servers)

Honestly, it does suck to wait. It really does sometimes, especially if your heart goes pitter-patter for a pet.
But sometimes you do save yourself a lot of grief. I got Quall recently just parking my hunter out there and checking in now and then.
Ganking on a PvE server? Yeah, I dunno about that...
Unless you change the nature of people themselves, there is no way to protect from griefing 100 percent. People will grief or use the protection measures to grief.
Personally, I'd like a faster respawn on the new world rares. Why not 1-2 hours like Pandaria? Lowbies get lil chunks of XP along the road (and maybe a nice drop to AH or use) and we don't have to sit for ages.
If someone is griefing, report them.
