For proto-drakes, we can say that we enslaved them or tamed them, like the many Vrykul in Northrend that have done the same.
For drakes like the Black, Blue, Azure and Twilight Drake, we can say that we've subdued them, sparing them from death only so that they can serve as a mount. Kinda brutal, huh?
For red drakes and the Cata achieve drakes, we can say that Alextrasza has granted us one of her finest servants for our use.

Cloud serpents are obviously explained already.

However, in the same way, I feel dragons could be earned as combat partners the same way. Maybe not to hunters, since Tame beast still implies (IMO) subduing the creature, and befriending it later. But I think it would be neat to have a Dracomancer or Dragonwhisperer or some such class in the future to allow the use of Dragonkin as combat partners. Perhaps make it a new hero class and have the starting quest line be them harnessing and befriending and learning the ways of the dragon. With plenty of "How to Tame Your Dragon" references, of course! xD
Frankly, I was thinking about it and can't see something as unwieldy as a dragon as a pet, even as a partner-type pet, because they're just kinda... big. Shrink them down, and they become just ridiculous. I can see more of a shapeshifting kind of deal where you become a dragon (temporarily?) because of being blessed by a dragonflight.

Eh, I'd say make them the size of tamed rhinos and you're good, but I definitely see where you're coming from. Now that I think though, I really think a Dracomancer Hero-Class would be fun! Think of all the possibilities! :o :o :o

Bah, I'd take a Drakonid playeble race over a hero class anytime :P

Draconids are basically former-mortal servants of dragonflights that were transformed by the dragonflight's blessing. After tidying up the post-Cata mess in Dragonblight, the dragons could release them from their service / send them back to aid other mortals against the Burning Legion invasion of 6.0.

And then I'd roll a bronze dragonkin monk and name him Garr:

The only problem I see here - who would ever want to play any other race if you could play a freaking DRAGON(kin)?

You know what that reminds me of? "Monster classes" from D&D. Creatures that are sapient but naturally more powerful than a class-less human would take several levels of a class called "<race name>" to slowly advance their racial powers. And only then they started proper advancement in a regular class. But that'd would either require a multi-class system in WoW, or having "drakonid" racial levels go all the way up.

Also, I think we went far enough off-topic. :P So, some pets are smart, eh?

my real-life cat turns on the basement lights by himself and opens and closes the bathroom door...

but my in-game cat can't seem to stay focused on a mob long enough to keep aggro.

maybe I should trade?

I think intelligence stops just shy of the official Blizzard forums...
