Chromaggus is a classic example. He was really quite rough to get, even back in Cata. But fast forward to 5.1, and most people are soloing the entire raid in their spare time. Heck, camping the rare might take more time. The Wasp Princess is a similar case; AQ40 is such a cakewalk that it ends up being harder to find the rare.
Either way, though, in an mmo like WoW, it's really very hard to find pets that have much "value" beyond what we personally attribute to them. Sure, we camp and we go through some tricky mechanics, but we're the only ones that know that. Any other hunter will either not notice, not care, or go tame it themselves. And when that's the case, why worry about people being able to tame an easier to find version of the pet? Nobody knows exactly what pet you tamed, so it's just like it's always been; only you will know the true value of your pet. That's what makes each stable special and unique.
More or less this. I think the first fight is the only thing that keeps Chroma from being easy to run in and get solo even by a crap geared or fresh toon. I know I spent more time camping the rare imitator then I would if I could get past the first fight (who know now I have not tried soloing it in a while).

The Razorgore encounter, much like the Chess Event in Karazhan, is INCREDIBLY difficult, if not semi-impossible, to solo, simply due to the fact the mechanics are based around the expectation that it is done as a group, and cannot really be "adapted" to solo play in the same way that shifting spell-damage numbers can be (such as SSC's Fathom-Lord Karathress' Cataclysm Bolt being changed from dealing 50% max health to 10%).

Actually, this isn't quite true. Razorgore is, I've found, one of the easier bosses of his sort to solo. With not terribly shabby gear, a 90 hunter can survive the adds long enough to control Razorgore and destroy all the eggs. The trick is often an explosive trap under your hunter and a few multi-shots when you're not controlling Razor. How I do it:
1. Dismiss pet, and kill the three orcs next to the orb. Place an explosive trap and use the orb.
2. Immediately start using the egg-killing ability on Razor every time it's off CD. I tend to try and go from one side of the room to the other (often, from your character's end of the room towards the other end). If you feel like it, use his sleep-inducing ability on the dragons that attack Razor.
3. Your main concern is keeping Razor alive; here's a trick. When you're controlling Razorgore, you can still use Exhilaration. That will not only give your hunter a chunk of health back, but it will *fully* heal Razorgore, which can be a lifesaver. You will lose control of him once you do, but just use that time to kill any adds on your player and take control of Razor again. Keep killing eggs, and make sure to use Exhilaration if he gets low on health.
4. Once all the eggs are dead, the adds run off and you can call your pet and take down Razor. Success!
Chess is technically soloable too, but I hate it and I tend to fail at it so don't ask me. >.>

Chess did in fact improve this patch, thank goodness. You can still get RNGed, but it's better.

I totally forgot about that ability... Has anyone tried to see if Exhilaration can work on the Chess pieces...?

I suspect it won't work because you're silenced while chess is going on.

You know, I'm not sure. I think you're silenced, but I believe Magnakilro tested it and could in fact use Exhilaration on chess pieces. ...Actually, I remember using it during Chess, so yes, I think you can.

I can personally confirm that Exhiliration DOES heal chess pieces.
Also...does chromaggus have a different roar? Haven't used him in a while and when I called him his roar was different....or it seemed different.

I don't have any real issues as they all retain their unique id. The experience my hunter had of taming all of the challenge tames especially the spiders don't get taken away by making some of the skins available from normal mob.
