Building your garrison happens at the very start of the zone experience for both factions and you soon have a portal up and running, back to your capital. Beyond that I don't think they'll become a huge time-sink if you don't want them to be, but I could be wrong. But they do serve as a very handy central hub to launch certain gameplay aspects from. If you get into the beta, it's worth following the short storyline to get your garrison up and your portal built before you run off and frantically explore :)
I really wish they could make Garrisons like WildStar did with the Housing, only better! I would love to "build" my Garrison up, while still having access to the NPCs, buildings, etc.
I'm not sure how it works in Wildstar but you do develop your garrison as you go, though it's not like you see buildings being raised over days or anything (at least not currently!).

Currently your very first starting quest in either Frostfire or SMV leads to you a short distance to patch of undeveloped land where someone important tells you to found a garrison. Craftsmen are ported in from your capital, you do a few quests to gather resources, clear the land of wildlife and angry indigenous humanoids that were already using it (in the case of Horde), pick up some plans and suddenly you have a basic garrison. A couple more quests and you have a portal. Killing stuff and finding the occasional loot node will award you "resources" which are the currency needed to add more buildings (profession workshops etc.) or upgrade current ones. The stable is usually a good one for us to add first and I found that was a cheap and easy one to get. But you also need to buy or find blueprints for additions and upgrades, and it also seems to be linked to the follower daily quests somehow. The garrison stuff suddenly stopped advancing in FFR so I never really worked that part out. Various encounters around the world will result in you getting more followers. Some of them can be sent on missions, which result in more stuff for you. There's a guy in your main building with an interface for seeing which missions are available, which are in progress, and which have completed and you can collect your rewards.

Eh, the hunter T17 we're seeing is not Mythic. It's normal/heroic, and it's a lot more huntery than T16. I think people are getting way too hung up over "it's not mail!".

maybe but I for once would love to look like an actual hunter and not a plate class ....

tbh the druid set gives of more a hunter fibe then the hunter set itself because it looks more chitin like instead of reenforced steel

for a class that is supposed to be in tune of with nature our sets use the least organic material of them all

On the hunter tier point: I really like that "new" boot model (it's not actually new, it's been around since Wrath but it's the only "new" one since classic's trifecta/quadfecta of skintight, peg-leg, tube sock, and cuffed) and it looks really good on most race/gender combinations (unlike peg-leg which I name for its effect on female draenei and to a lesser extent on the males, both types of worgen, and anything else I'm forgetting without a plantigrade leg) but I'm really getting tired of all the hunter boots having fake "toes" on them, and all the shaman boots being skintight. The ones on t16 are more subtle than most and the challenge mode ones have faces instead of toes, but like... I dunno. I think I'm still just miffed that once I put together a set that mostly worked with the shaman t15 LFR recolours you can get as a hunter (aka no kilt, s i g h) I only managed to wear it for about two days because the hideous toes on the t10 boots just drove me crazy.

I guess it's not as common as I feel like it is (of the ten options mail wearers have for that boot model on live, you've got the CM boots, three versions of t16-matching boots, two versions of t11-matching boots, three versions of t10-matching boots, and those really nice dark blue/dark red/black boots off 25m Malygos—so 30% absolutely hideous toes, 50% arguable toes, and 20% no toes at all) but I know they've done it a lot in the past on OTHER boot models (going back as far as Beaststalker) so there is that (and no I'm not gonna trawl through MogIt to tally up how many total pairs of mail boots there are currently available in-game and how many of them have toes. I'm not. I'm really not. ...yes I am. Okay 296 pairs of transmoggable mail boots currently available in-game right now according to MogIt, 17 toes—all from hunter tiers or hunter tier recolours) but there's been a real dearth of nice mail boots lately—the majority have been skintight or peg-legged, with only the quest mail and shaman t14 boots being the tube model, hunter t16 and CM sets being the only WotLK model, and the t9 boots, Prideful and Grievous PvP boots being the only cuffed/pirate model, out of 54 total alliance hunter/shaman boot options.

This, uh... this went to a tangenty place, haha whoops :x

They said that (what is currently flex/normal and what will be) normal and heroic are going to have the different colours, right? or is one of those colours the set they intend for conquest or however they're setting up the pvp thing? And if so, can the PvErs get that brown/red/blue version instead of the green/slate/brown one? :P

If anything, I'd prefer both Hunter and Shaman gear to look more like *leather*. Even though both classes have been shoehorned into the mail-wearers (probably just so that someone uses it!), they thematically both make more sense in leather. No hunter is going to go clanking through the underbrush in mail, and shaman should wear more rough and traditional-looking materials, bits of dead animals, etc.

I expect our Mythic tier will see a similar treatment that druids got, Rylak wings on our backs?.. I deem this epic

@hunter set - ...meh. At best. Definitely not going to wear it. Colouring, WWF belt, stompy boots, and all that PLATE >.> my dwarfette would look like a pile of iron horde armor scraps. On the other hand - maybe that's the new camo option :P

@druid set - Holly J on a stick...! <3

just look at this guy!

hunter set is meh.
the new plant thing using the tol'vir model? awesome. I'm starting to get interested in the reason for all these new plant guys. I love plant guys. give me more! pets! mounts! battle pets! player races! go!

last of all, that druid set. oh my god. I have always been jealous of the rouge dragon wings from the dagger and the healing cloak crane wings. these look sick. I may play my druid more JUST to get those dragonfly wings.

I thought it was based on the Tol'vir skeleton too. In fact the in-game placeholders were green Tol'vir! But SpiritBinder pointed out differences in behaviour and stance that suggested a closer similarity to magnataurs.

I ended up bring up both models in WMV and the Magnataurs from Wrath and the Genosaurs have identical skeletons and animation sets at this point. It works quite well accept one attack animation where the Magnataurs gores with its tusks. On the Magnataur it's tusks are much lower and longer and it looks great, but on the Genosaur it's ok, but when compared you can see it was orgianlly animated for a different model. Also while walking the Genosaurs head is held a little unnaturally high, but again just in comparison to what the original model the skeleton/animations were intended for. :)

Looking at the Genosaur again, the face reminds me a lot of the Alpha dragon from HTTYD2!
