I want to hug that post, 13thmaiden! xD After all, even though Blizzard doesn't tend to go for realism per se, some animals look more like their real world counterparts than others. It's certainly worth considering, especially since the upcoming model leaves so much to be desired.

Yeah yeah I know, hence why I'm trying to give benefit of the doubt to the snarling and stuff. But still, if you're referencing a real life animal, you should try to get it close to it's real counterpart. Or atleast have a good reason WHY they're suddenly Broke Back Bears.
This is why I edited my post saying that I agree.

Thank you Kalliope! Took awhile to find the right pictures for all that. But still, Broke Back Bears. It needed to be addressed. It's like the gay cowboy bear in the room you know.
And no worries Tyger, I read your updated post. I mean, the thing is, if you're gonna call it a bear, make it atleast look pretty close to a bear. If you look at crocolisk, we give more leeway because it doesn't say straight up 'crocodile'. But there's also a state of 'what we accept' due to canon of the video games. If bears had say horns, giant teeth and a reptilian tail in the vanilla or prior games, we would be more willing to accept that as a 'bear' because that's what we consider the canon of the game. Just like in Fallout you think of the brahmin as 'cow', even though while it has basic structures of a cow, that thing is NOT what you think of as 'cow' when you go out into the real world.
When you take a walk away from what is familiar to the player, you run into a very bad sense of disassociation, which is what happened with WoD's updates on the player models faces. It disconnected people from their player because the face didn't look like what they envisioned based on what the game had provided when they created the character.
For Worgs, it actually WORKED because they kept it relatively close to the original design, just updated the polygon count, added more fluff around the neck, and gave them the better wolf skeleton to move to, as well as a better textured coat. The over all skeleton was not changed, just increased, and it had enough familiarity that it didn't bother us as much.
But this bear, we've lost alot of familiarity with it, in it's odd broken back, overstated face and snout, and for me personally, that weird-arse beard. I think alot of animals need updating (LIKE HYENAS BLIZZ! >_>) but they need to focus on trying to keep a very close familiarity or they will end up like we're having with the bears, people can't stand the weird changes.
That and lets face it, it's painful to look at a Broke Back Bears.

I stopped liking tallstriders when they made them stick their necks out all weird like the hawkstriders. I get that it was probably a change meant to make the heads not clip into riders on the mount version but I just can't get past the general suggestion of a penis with legs anymore.
Their upright heads and prancy run was so cute and now...ugh.

I just wanted to say how much I like what you've written.

Very well thought out and well said. And I agree with you. I dislike a *lot* about the new bear model that it makes me actually kinda love the old one even though I never really have because of its issues. I'd love if they could fix all the old pets that really need some tweaking (poor hyenas and their odd spine issues when running even though they use the classic wolf skeleton).
The new player faces, thankfully, didn't bother me. There may have been one toon that I had to adjust and they at least gave the option to switch it on or off; I personally think the updating looks nice, but I can understand people being upset. I'm most disappointed that the female worgen ever made it to final release and that Blizzard doesn't seem to keen to go and fix them. It's not even just their final, horrifying face, the whole model/skeleton is actually broken and the fact that they seem to be okay with it bothers me.

Darling don't even get me started on the mutant chihuahua. You know I made a model of the female worgen back when I was taking animation and computer modeling classes, and in all truth, I still think it was better than what they have now, though the alpha face was still the best.
As for the face changes, some people had real problems with it, I should know, I was the one that kept the giant list of complaints and bugs on the forums (yes I'm that Makki if any of you wandered the WoD beta forums XD), but I also understood that some people were cool with the changes, which is why I always pushed for more options so that those who liked the new faces could keep them, and those who wanted closer to the original could get those. And since I play a tauren it might have filled out the whopping 4 faces we got to choose from.
As for the skeleton, it's a horribly bastardized version of the tauren's, hence why it's so broken since they had to shrink it some (while enlarging skeletons doesn't bother it too much, shrinking has a tendency to warp animation skeletons badly.) They seriously need to look at that during this xpac, but I doubt they will with all the other things they're focusing on.

But thanks, I like it when people appreciate my posts and thoughts, I do try to think them out logically.

I really appreciate all the thoughts here, too

Thank you! I just wish you all had Alpha access so you could post this to the official forum

Maybe when they fully open up Beta (if they're ever gonna call it that

) they might call me, they have for the last 2, but eh, for now there's a good number of people who agree, and if they want they're welcome to use my post if they have access to the forums already, I don't mind.

What hunters who don't have Alpha access can do is reach Warcraft Devs through Twitter:
https://twitter.com/WarcraftDevs
If you question them about the quality of the current replacement bear I'll be happy to like it. Maybe if a few people post they'll no longer ignore it.
But please be polite in anything you post!

Awesome

. Are you able to provide a link? I don't know how to find things that were tweeted to Warcraft Devs from others.

As soon as I figure Twitter out, I will. Only time I've used it was when I was camping Poundfist.
I wanna post this, like my worgen is worried about the back and my bear is worried about the goatee.

*laughs* Omg, I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who hasn't used Twitter except to hunt Poundfist.
It's such an odd goatee on a bear too. I guess they're trying to reason 'Hey! The Pandarian have goatees, we should give bears goatees!' which is about as smart as making the dairy cows of human settlements have udders between their front legs rather than where they are normally because you know, us Tauren have breasts like humanoids, rather than udders between our legs. Which has never stopped us from providing milk like champs.

Someone more talented than I should photoshop a beret, round glasses and thin cigarette on the bear. With that goatee it'd look like a stoned beat poet from the 60s.

Now that I've figured my password out lol
I'll respond to an existing thread.

Lot of good it did me lol. So many hours wasted only to get it from a kind soul who put it in group finder on a random day. This was before they made him immune to cyclone, which was the only reason I made it in time. Hope you got yours!

So much wonderful epicness above.
13thmaiden - I loved your posts and agree 100%
I really could live with the hipster goatee if they'd fix the broken back. I could maybe live with the black that is really maroon if the back was fixed. The back really really is what kills the immersion & attachment to bears. Currently one of my hunters will never be touched in Legion now because of this.

Aww thanks hon.
Yeah I can live with the goatee and colors if mostly that skeleton and the back is fixed, that's the biggest overall problem with the model. Come to think of it, I haven't looked at the new druid bear model, is it as broken backed as these??
