So since they start with one and the rest aren't tamable, I guess there's no way to get a pair for Animal Companion?

At this time, no, it isn't possible.

I'm very disappointed by the fact that neither the DI nor the void elf pets have tameable counterparts. The Nightborne one I can forgive, although it probably should have a wild counterpart too.

What I want to know is,
if I level this Dark Iron toon up to max leve and I race change to my preferred race,
will the pet change as well, or do I get to keep firepup?

I would seriously level up a new hunter and race change it if it won't change the pet.

I have a Dark Iron now. I love the fire doggos with their ember manes and tufted tails!

That is a very interesting question....I know as of now for regular race changes you have the pets you have on you and in your stable. I should have kept my starter turtle from when my Velf was a Panda just to see if that came into play with a race change. Oh well.

You keep your pets. I've done these race changes in the past and always kept all pets, unique starter included.
