I can kind of sympathize with stupidwolf.
I don't personally like any of the wolf models in game. The oil-stained wolf is cool because he is soo black and shadowy, but I still think the model is badly drawn (by my tastes).
When I found out I had to choose: boost my damage by taming a wolf, or sacrifice my damage and dig in my heels on bringing another pet, I decided I shouldn't knock it unless I tried the wolf thing. I made a real effort. I browsed all the wolf models on petopia, I picked the one that I found least hideous, and tamed it. I felt like naming it stupid wolf would only make me hate it more, and I was trying to be fair. So even though I disliked the wolf, I chose a fitting name for him in a futile attempt to get to a point where I would actually like it.
It never worked, obviously. I still dislike all current in game wolf pet models (except maybe the old untameable ghost wolf model), and any relationship with my wolf pet was only utility never any actual companionship. I used the damage boost, fed my wolf and kept him well, but we weren't best of pals.
I can definitely see how a hunter who was required to tame a wolf they didn't want by their guild, or no raid for you, might name it stupidwolf in frustration. I don't agree with it, but I understand it.

One of the hunters that tamed Loque on my server early on in the expansion is a little... mentally unstable, according to people who had been in guild with her. For several weeks she ran around with Loquenahak named "MINE" just like that in all caps. As a big childish "I have this and you don't nyah nyah nyah" to the server. After that she renamed, and called her pet "ENVY" and I've noticed as she's tamed other Spirit Beasts all their names have been similarly narcissistic and icky.
She sounds kind of 'special'. I almost want to pull my loque out in front of her and go 'Well, since you showed me yours, here's mine!' But ick. I'm still after Skoll.
Personally, names are a matter of taste. But it's one thing to be incredibly stupid and offensive (Hi P--is, Puzzay, and others. Like Obama the black gorilla. Yeeeah...) and another to be cute or go with a theme.

Keep in mind that a name that might seem mean spirited or stupid to you may actually be meant affectionately by the owner. I know that there's a user on the boards who named her warpstalker Jerkface, but the way she talks about it leaves me no doubt that she genuinely likes/cares about it. I myself have a Scorpid named Rock (brown scorpid), and he's one of my favorite pets.
I've given my pets some not-so-nice names, generally when our partnership hasn't worked out and I intend to be releasing them soon; "Soonreplaced" the cat, and "TheFlap" the dragonhawk, for example.

Don't knock Bob. My water elemental is named Bob. Many people target him until they are dead, probably not aware yet of the renaming-water-eles command.
I don't care what people name their pets, nor do I take offense, but some are certainly cringeworthy

I have a few poor pet names, I'll admit. Mostly Temp Pets, however. When I was a younger hunter, I had a carrion bird named Trashpet for a ZF run for a snake. Carrion Bird would also be TempPet in another case.
I've also had Barky the wolf, Barky2 the wolf, Savage (As in Adam.), NotBarky the bird, AlsoNotBarky the cat, and Cat the cat, because it just fit him. He was Cat. When I renamed him, he left, because he wasn't Cat.

Now, I dislike seeing bad pet names as much as anyone, but we have to remember this is just a game. These are pixelated pets as much as we feel attachments to them, not everyone thinks the same. For many people pets are just a tool of their hunters and nothing more.
One of the hunters on my server that's a good guy and friend of our guild has a wolf named "IKILLEDLKTOO". Dumb name? Yes. Bad hunter? Not at all. Bad names don't make bad hunters or make a "huntard," their actions on the class do. It's purely a matter of perspective.
My boyfriend prefers more silly names for his characters while I prefer more serious ones. His hunter is named Qtrpwnder (and it's his alt) and a few of his pets are themed (ie "LargeFries" "NoPickles"). However, I've heard him remark how dumb some of the names out there are (Ipwnjoo, etc). Just thought I'd point out both sides of it here.

There's a difference between crude and in good taste.
This, I have more dumb character names (Aprettylady) than I have ever had poorly named pets. Out of all of them the only ones that might have "undesirable" names are Goldenboy, Boo, and Lisztomania. They were all given their names out of affection so I don't see a problem.
Goldenboy is a yellow crock of Rarako's (NE), I had just tamed him and was sitting around thinking of a name when a horde jumped me. The big boy flew past me like a golden bolt and was on the guy before I even knew that had happened. His was my golden boy, and has been since.
Sersallia picked up a Disembodied Jormungar after the last patch to test it out. It felt odd running around without having a name for him, I was just testing mind you and did not think he would stay with me since I had Arala back. I just typed in the first thing that came to mind, Boo. It stuck and he's been one of my favorites ever since. I happened to get the yellow one because a roommate found him and demanded I tame it, so now I don't know which to keep... Sers also has Lisztomania, he is a rhino and I couldn't help it, that's my defense. +1 internets if you get the reference.

I think the worst name I've given a pet is my current Croc named Wiggles...because he wiggles when he walks. I love him already so I don't see a problem with it really.
I ran with someone that named their wolf MuttButt. I asked him why and he told me that he named it because he hates the wolf looks in NR and hated raiding with one, but he was forced to use it instead of his windserpent. No idea why..he did the same damage with the serpent before the latest patch as he did with the wolf.
I've seen some nasty names in randoms though. And a few really neat ones. Nothing too vulgar, thankfully.

Agreed. :3 And I also agree with Rarako. My worst is probably devilsaur called Applesourz, but I absolutely love him.

I had a friend (male) who had a hunter called Britney and her cat Spears. >.>

I spend alot of time thinking of names for my pets, some might find them daft but I like em and at the end of the day that what counts.
Loque'nahak = Stella
Arcturis = Hofmeister (Follow the bear)
Skoll = Carlsberg ( cause if blizz made pet they would probably be as good as this one)
As you see I went with a theme with my spirit beasts.
TheBeast = TheBeast (just a damn good name not worth changing)
Ghost Saber = Clingfilm (cause hes see through)
Pink Tallstrider = Fidget
King Krush = Elvis (The King of cause)
Aotona = Indigo
Disembodied Jormungar worm = TequilaSlammer

You're quite welcome. ^_^
He spent a lot of time searching for a hunter name and he ended up liking that one the best.

As most people have said, I think there's a difference between clever or silly names, and offensive or grammatically incorrect ones.
Personally as an avid writer I hate seeing things named in l33t-speak. Sure, it's funny on the net, but it doesn't make a good NAME. And it doesn't feel very, I dunno, imaginative to name things 'ipwnedu' or 'lolnoob' or whatever.
I prefer serious names myself (the 'silliest' my pet names have ever gotten was Malcolm the Firefly). But I do totally respect people who come up with clever names (like the Qtrpwnder one, which takes a lot of planning and comes as a set). Good clever silly names make me chuckle with genuine amusement even if I wouldn't use them myself.
I just don't like seeing people bend rules to do something offensive or just...uncreative.

The Qtrpwndr name is brilliant. My bf named his hunter Phonebook (it was the first thing he saw by the desk, so that's what he called him), and his pet raptor is Telephone. Lately, he's been asking me for names. Granted, we did call his nether ray Caviche, but I came up with Proviso and Indie and Skaarsgard (though I can't remember how it's spelled, and I named my chimera Stellan to match Skaarsgard)...
I reported a "ballsak" once. Guy changed it to ballsac. Re-reported. A GM changed it to Spot. He changed it to Lug. I was amused.

Not gonna lie, I might be 1 of those that you guys speak of, I just don't have that creativity, and that "ah, so cute names" that you'd have for a puppy just isn't me. Since my Hunter is an orc, I try to think of Dominating names, and fail miserably:(
Humor - BlackPrince
King Krush - Krush (wanted "JungleFever" myUncleKing") the bad part is I wanted this pet so bad to match my orc, and couldn't think of a name, dammit THRALL!! oh well too late.
Demon Wolf - Snoop
Skoll - Sparky (might be the most cuddly name I have)
The Beast - TheBeast (was perfect for my taste)
Grey Core Hound - Nothing yet, but perfect for 1 of those cuddly names yall like)
Stride Clutchmother - Momma
Hunched Black Leapord - Terror
Gondria - Phantastico
Uhk'loc - Grandpa

Most of mine get more or less, legitimate names. Names either someone would be called in our world, a name that would easily fit into the fantasy one (Elven style names for pets of elves, Orcish names for pets of Orcs, etcetc.) Or, they get a name that is either descriptive or silly in the same way Spike or Spot is for a dog.
I've been using Behindthename.com a lot for names, and they've worked out nicely. I'm very fond of Itzal and Rajani, actually. <3 The silliest name I have to have, is for my Devilsaur, Walnut. It's descriptive in two ways: His color as he is a Pygmy Tyrant Devilsaur, as well as for the size of his brain. Walnut is extraordinarily dopey, and the Devilsaur "smack-with-head-to-attack" attack animation doesn't help one bit. However, he is definitely one of my favorites. A close second would have to be Melo, my bat. I've lived in Greece, and one of my favorite words is μηλο. Μηλο means Apple. So, I have an albino bat named Apple. However, most people do not know this, due to it being an Australian server.

(I also named him when I was 12. What do you want? D: )

I have "Six" and "Seven," my cats, I'm not sure why they're named as they are. I have a Scorpid named "Ant" and a silithid named "Hunger". There's also "Arccy" the Arcturis and "Worm" the Worm. "Kaido" and "Mari" are wind serpents. "Shakira" is a wolf. xD
I don't mind ridiculous names.

I'm sometimes saddened to see a brilliant pet burdened with an undeniably terrible name. Be they spirit beasts, rare skins, or even just a cool model, to see it running about named "nubpwnr" or something similarly awful is just disappointing.
That being said, I have a devilsaur named NomNom, which I imagine has probably made some folks roll their eyes. Before I got my ironhide, I did everything with my King B who I had named Scratchy. I'm decidedly bad at naming (when rolling alts I almost always let a few clicks of the randomize button settle on something I can live with), but I do try to come up with something at least semi-decent these days.
Still pondering on what to name my Arc.
