Yes, well, James Cameron is somewhat a creep.
I was never into furries, apparently he is, however.
And Zoe Saldana was much hotter as Uhura. I mean... 10', blue, tailed catgirl IN SPACE? I'd rather have the linguist with fancy earrings and tiny little skirt IN SPACE version.

The movie was as steaming pile of dung. Why Cameron gets any credit for this shows me the extent of how bad movies have become.
Visually beautiful but the story is basically Pocahontas in space. Completely unoriginal storyline (and I take into effect that 98% of new movies have rehashed plots) completely kills the movie.

Well to be fair my mother once warned me most men would chase after even bushes, if they had the right parts. And most men don't care aslong as it has boobs. It's not about it being furry, it's about it having boobs.
If someone told me, "you are doing x, and that is wrong." The natural reaction is to defend that act, regardless of what it is.
Denial is difficult to break through.
But to be able to overcome this and actually look at what they are saying, and try to look at your actions through an objective lens, is sometimes a very difficult thing.
Even then, being able to say, "you are right, it is wrong." is even harder.
Not to mention getting someone to say, "I will stop what I am doing, and do something else," and then having them follow through.
A movie isn''t going to change people. Not when the movie is about future aliens and all that. Not when it's having sex appeal from cat people. Not when it's spewing out the same overhyped crap that it was before. Do you know why? it is no better than being told you are wrong- I am right. It's not showing you how to be better and then at the end of it you go oh, and realize. It's not really showing the consequences of things really. True things. Not over hyped things.
Because do you think people will really stop because Cameron is all oh you people you're all mean stop hurting mother earth. No, no it won't. It's going to be a slap in the face with reality that the world is not run by people like you or me. If people like Cameron, in Hollywood, with all their hype, their money. Power and fame, don't really get off their asses outside of make movies with messages for the little man, do you really think anyone is going to do anything?
Cameron was just pushing out another eco scare movie. Which have been done many times before. Like
Night of the Lupus if I remember right. And a movie about worms who are being tormented by man's presence and they eat him. And ofc the one where nature suddenly decides to try and kill off everything. Which is hilarious as nature needs what it's kiling off to survive but no, all of nature! Then there was a movie where frogs and fish and etc attacked people in a swamp. And there was another funny movie involving a Gift from the Gods/Earth or something that made them grow to epically huge proportions and go mad with blood lust or some crap and just.. lol.
All Cameron did was make a movie like that, give it a more tasteful plot so to speak and then wrapped it up with shinies.
Honestly? I have seen a better cowboy movie that I forget the name of. It was based off TRUE events. It showed how horrible humanity was but one man strived to teach I think it was sons or workers or nephews, I forget. Been a while, to NOT be like that. They even rescued 4/5 chinese girls from basically becoming sex slaves and while 2 died along the way, the other three survived. They thrived.
It showed how disgusting humanity could be, but it also showed how good a man, REALLY could be. And how he SHOULD be.

Not saying it's right, just saying it's in the nature of most men- no offense meant to those male petopians we have. But it's in the nature of men to lust, want and well stare. Not many decide to literally be the better man and ignore these more 'reptilian minded' desires.
It really is no different than a woman crudely using her sex appeal to get the attention of men, or vice versa. It's why sex sells so well and so much. It's why people do fanservice, tasteless or not.
Because even if people like you or me don't want to see a set of alien boobs, there's most likely a dozen men that would.
this is also the other reason why I laugh about how Avatar is such a 'good movie' and 'promoting how we should all stop our evil, evil oil using ways'.

I feel that as a man IRL, I need to say something now.
I don't know if it's male-specific, but I certainly can see attractiveness on something that doesn't look too human. Draenei are one of the hottest fantasy races I have seen, and I know why people obssess over Mithras from Final Fantasy. And Na'vi are essentially a cross-breed of those two.
No, I'm not a furry in a "yiffer" sense. Some kind of "alien" faces have some sort of exotic beauty to it that I can admire, as long as they are not too animalistic with their posture and faces. Straight out fox head stuck on a humanoid, furried body is not hot. Weirdly colored humanoid with some vulpine features on the face can be, if done properly.
It's not about "furries". It's just about beauty, not even in a sexual sense.

I heard somewhere that there are about 20 different plots that exist, and that all movies/stories can be classified under one of those 20 or so. Maybe to further break it down there could only be 4 basic stories, I think thats correct assumption as well.
I loved this movie, saw it twice in 3d, but I really don't need to go out and buy the Blueray or the special edition Blueray with 15 extra minutes, or the soon to be re-re-re-released special edition that has 17 extra minutes! 2 more minutes that the re-re-released special edition!
I'll wait for the limited edition of the special special edition when its repackaged in the limitied ultra special edition re-re-re-re-release.
Dont worry it will come

Well, a lot of people can't tell difference between "beautiful" and "I want to bang that", because sex is their only drive in life - and not only men.
So, in a way, he did say she was beautiful.

Yeah, sure, I'm not a fan of expressing it that way either, but I learnt to avoid harsh criticism of something that's just crude and primitive. In the end, it's basically the same thought... just through a lens of a less convoluted person.
I bet that if Na'vi were real, they would express it similarly. The "wild" tribes are not particularly known for their sophistication in regards to the more carnal side of their lives.

Why do people keep comparing it to Pocahontas? It has MUCH more in common with dances with wolves

I enjoyed the movie, there aren't many movies as well done as Avatar. The visuals where fantastic of course, even if I only watched in 2D HD on TV.
That said, why couldn't the human's motivation have been something less one dimensional than pure greed? They briefly mentioned in the movie that Earth was pretty much ruined, so why not have the humans as refugees trying to make a fresh start on a new planet? The massive philosophical difference between the Na'avi and the humans could just as easily supported the events of the story. Heck, the humans even tried to negotiate with the natives with a multi-billion dollar Avatar program and even that couldn't bring the two sides together. It would have been a difficult choice as to which side you agreed with if events where driven by racial issues, culture clash, and unfortunate misunderstandings.

Personally, I have no idea where to start.
And I actually wonder if I should.
The last discussion I got into on these forums about a serious topic, well, it ended badly.
Because, to put it mildly, some people don't know how to debate a topic.
(Redherrings, Strawman Arguements, Appeals to Ignorance, Appeals to the Majority, etc)
But, here goes.....
If you are going to talk about what "people" will and will not do, I think this requires a bit more knowledge of the affects of the media and the movie industry in general.
First off, movies can change people, and this has been seen in history.
(Look at "An Inconvenient Truth," and how it has help change national policy around the world. Yes. Really.)
So I find the assertion that people can not be changed by movies to be blatantly false.
And my example shows that an environmental movie specifically can have an effect.
Second, the assertion that the presence of "sexy cat women" would somehow stops people from listening to the "message" of a movie.
I can tell you from a quick survey of my friends, that A most of them (11/12) did not find the cat women attractive and B (10/12) were receptive to the movies message.
Of course it should be noted that (2/12) did not like the message of the movie, and (1/12) did not like the movie at all.
If you don't like the movie, thats fine.
Some people don't.
But, some people do.
And actually, the vast majority of the people that I asked about the movie, back when it was first released, (Somewhere around 92% actually) actually enjoyed the movie.
(I asked about sixty or so people about their opinions on the movie. Really. But don't ask me why I did a survey about a movie.)
Sure my sample may be a little bias, I did work at the college.
But that does not discount my results.
Second, the world IS run by people like you and me.
People just don't know or believe it.
Ask any company out there.
Ask any politician.
They are ruled by their customers, their people.
What happened when gas was $4.00 a gallon?
People stopped buying SUV's and instead purchased smaller more fuel efficient cars.
What happened to Ford and Chevy because of this?
Who was dictating to whom?
The problem is that most people just pass the buck and do not let their voice be heard.
Sometimes it takes something big before people voice their opinions, more often than not, this is true.
But, it is far from a rule.
Oh, and if anything can be taken from James Cameron's quote is that -HE- is weird. And that his ideas of "hot" do not necessarily reflect on males of the human species.

Alot were I can't be stuffed looking for them but most of the major ones where. I can remmber the one about polar bears was totaly wrong. He said they have been finding drowned ones becoue of melting ice when infact the only reported cases of drowned polar bears was from storms.
