I solo'ed him without using the pillars.
Here's how...
First...I cleared all trash in the room...
Then I jammed myself in the little corner of the stairs and the waqll of Skeram's platform.
I cast mend, then send pet in.
I just stand there casting nothing but KC.
When he's about to split, I Feign and quickly tell pet to attack one of the skerams (when he splits, the pets run back to owner)
I then have pet kill the copies (should go down quickly)
Then I get back up and spam KC till next split...then repeat the whole process till I'm victorious.
If you do it this way tho, you won't get any loot as the pet did all the damage.
As said before...spirit beast is your best bet.

I soloed him last night with my Spirit Beast. The first couple attempts were rocky, because I didn't have the positioning quite right. Here's what worked:
I stood at MAX RANGE to use the "Move To" command to send my pet to the base of the stairs leading up to Skeram. Pet runs to base of stairs. Again, I am standing as far back as I possibly can to make the pet "Move To" the base of the stairs. I'm waaaay out of range to use Mend Pet or to shoot the boss, but that's OK.
Pet arrives at base of stairs and stops there. I send pet to Attack Skeram. I don't even FD... I'm standing far enough away that he can't MC me. I use Kill Command and Bestial Wrath on cooldown to help my pet kill the boss faster.
When he SPLITS, that's when I had some issues. Bad Things happen if my pet runs back toward me, dragging the splits/eventually the Real Skeram toward me. Then he can MC me. Bad. So. As soon as he splits, that's when I FD, and I stay FDed until all the splits are dead, making sure my pet kills each split before going back to the real boss. Since I used "Move To," my pet should not be dragging anything back to me, and instead picking them up at the base of the stairs... but I did have some issues with this. At one point I had to switch pet to Passive (while still FDed) and then use Move To again to send him back to the stairs, well away from me, before telling him to engage the splits again.
Once all the splits are dead, assuming Skeram is still up on the stairs and I'm still at my starting point out of range of MC, I can stand back up and start using Kill Command and Bestial Wrath again. Until the next split. And of course I was using Spirit Mend any time it was available and my pet was below 93% health or so.
Took me 3 tries to get the positioning right, and then I had no trouble soloing him. I never shot the boss though, which means my pet did all the attacking and I didn't get to loot the boss. But that's ok, I just wanted to get past him. I'm farming for the super pretty dress off the 3rd boss, Robes of the Guardian Saint:

Good luck to anyone soloing this, I hope this helps a little! <3

If you put your pet on aggressive, I don't think he will run back to you.

This. Putting your pet on Agressive and Move To will keep your pet from returning to you on splits. When I soloed this at 80 that's how I did it.

That wasn't the issue I had. I actually had Skeram move far enough out of my range, he despawned my pet altogether. It may have been just bad luck, but the splits made my pet move very erratically on attempts before I used Stay.

When I was doing it, I had to set my pet to a "home" location away from me with the "move to" button. From there, I feigned behind a pillar and watched my pet carefully throughout the fight. When I was afraid he was getting too far out I'd move him to passive to make him drag the boss/clones back to his home location, then back to defensive so he'd fight again.
It's a little micro-managey, but it was how it worked for me.

You will have to tell it to attack the clones, but putting it on aggressive and move to keeps the pet from returning to your side. I always had DBM tell me when the split was going to happen so I was prepared to click a clone and force my pet to attack it.
The fight requires a lot of pet micro management, but if it was doable at 80, I imagine it can't be too terribly hard to do at 81+, especially with the spirit beast's heal.

Nice tactic...took me 3 tries, and the last one I miskeyed and Kill Command'ed so I figured 'Well, this try is ruined, may as well open up on him.". Got him down to around 60, 65% before FD repopped, took it back to max range to not respawn pet, out of range for MC, and hit the deck again.
I have no idea how or why he didn't manage to MC me while I was up and fighting, unless he can only use it every so often and it was on cd from trying to charm my pet. but, screenie for proof.

Guys still posting I think you didn't see the edit where I finally downed him- after having to clear trash twice because al the attempts took that long. So I am mostly in doubt of people who claim they did this in one try, with no sweat, when it took me over a god damn hour.
I haven't raged and beat my desk that much until I played Overlord and had to do one objective for five hours.
all that matters is I got my damn goldenorange Silithid and I AM NEVER GOING BACK IN THERE. EVER.
*flips Skeram off*
I hope Melvin eats him >(

Oh I saw...but it reminded me of an old score I wanted to try settling
I picked up Yuaj while I was in zone to make it worth the time spent.

He's pretty easy actually if you know how to. The way i did it at level 80 was to send in my spirit pet, get a couple of shots, hide behind a wall cause of LoS, and FD. And then let the pet do the rest. Just be sure to make it kill the copies before resuming on the main or they will kill the pet

with the nerf to bad manner, i dismissed my monkey and went back to a wasp. decided on getting a nice giant one, princess huhuran.
skeram, i just rode past him to the pillar. sent my ghostcrawler(nerfbat) right next to him. let him solo skeram till 20% then jumped out and blasted him with a couple of kill shots and exp shots.
one shotted satura, wiped twice on fankriss(skipped him), at huhuran used ancient hysteria, 6 sec tame.

Just one little response; Bad Manner wasn't nerfed. It was fixed- there's a difference. Because if scatter shot breaks on damage, why would a pet version of scatter shot not break on damage?
And in general as I said when I did run up the stairs to far or rather, cause my pet to run up the stairs to far thanks to the MC spam, he reset. So I really don't see how you can LoS him with a pillar, and not have him reset. And we can talk till we're all blue in the face but I am having my doubts anyone can do this in one try- repeatedly.
Maybe I should expand onto the title of Like hell you can easily solo Skeram. Cause that was hell, as I said the only thing more torturous than that was the 5 hour madness ordeal of a stupid objective in Overlord. And I got my Silithid and I am never going back into AQ 40, never, hiss, hiss I say.
