Random thought - Varethyn, your turtle is named Atuin.
You're awesome.

My littlest hunter (who isn't so little anymore), Vanity, has one. Her pets are all named after
qualities (whether positive or negative). Well, except for Stupidface the starter crab who I feel entirely too guilty to abandon.
My elder hunter, Problem, used to have two - black or white pets (stuck to it for two pets, Humar and Olm) and naming pets something to do with her name (stuck to it for five pets).
The rest is a mismash.
I'm also planning a third hunter (I need therapy), an undead one, and plan to tame all sorts of dead / diseased / ghostly pets.

At first I was thinking about having a black pet theme, but there just aren't enough black pets that I like, so now my draenei tend to have blue-ish pets to match her better. When I find darker pets, or white for that matter (I love black/white) I will probably tame them though if I want one of that family.
I also thought of having a Swedish name theme, but after the (initially) temporary name on my Skoll, Anniversary, things went downhill
If I find a swedish name that fits, I will use it (like my newest one, Glöd, for Terrorpene), but some just sounds better in english. I have a feeling I will be changing names on some of my pets when I get to 85 and start leveling them all, just to see if I can make up some good ole swedish for them that fits

(and yes, having an inscriptor alt really helps with that

)
As everyone else, my undead has a clear theme of undead/zombie/ghostly pets

There will be some exceptions though, if I like some pets that won't fit my draenei, my UD will probably get them. I did make her just to tame the undead eagle actually

Kind of sad we can't retame the slime though, that would be an AWESOME undead pet
They don't really have a theme in case of names yet, since most of them are unnamed. But I will have more childish or cute names for them, since my idea for her is that she was a hunter in life, and her pets followed her through death. The ones that have names are Akasha (her ghostly cat) because that is the spirit in Pagan beliefs, Patches (her undead eagle) since he looks a bit roughed up, and Webby her first pet.

That's it, I'm about to make an undead hunter with a theme of lively, colorful, exuberant pets. Just because it seems like so many people have a dead/bones/ghost theme for their undead. I dare to deviate!!!

That's actually a damn good idea! Thank god I hate the Undead model, or I'd be stealing it.

Haha thanks

I realize that Atuin (A'tuin) is actually the turtle from Discworld and the turtle i was really looking for is called Chukwa. But if everyone likes it I think I'll just leave her as is

Reading this has made me want to use Discworld characters for my worgen's naming theme now.

Originally, my stable theme names were all derivations of clowns (Harlequin, Jester, Pierrot, etc.). However, since getting the ghost wolf with the sword lodged in its head, which I promptly named "Excalibur" (I know, I know... that's the sword from the Lady in the Lake, and not the Sword in the Stone), I changed all of mine to swords from mythology, fiction, old school anime/cartoons/TV and video games.
Wolf (Lone Hunter): Excalibur
Blue Frost Worm: Joyeuse (Charlemagne's sword)
Armored Black Pig: Blackgate (from Ultima VIII, I wanted to call it Blackrock, but the name's reserved, boo)
King Krush: Dhylec (from fighting game Darkstalkers, the sentient sword that Donovan wields)
Nuramoc: Dragonstar (poor translation of the Zodiac sword from the RPG, Suikoden)
Loque: Eirias (from Chronicles of Narnia)
Qirot: Fidelacchius (from the Dresden Files, contains one of the nails from the True Cross)
Green Cat: Kusanagi (Japanese equivalent of Excalibur)
Purple Shale Spider: Masamune (another famous Japanese sword of legend)
Skoll: Matrixblade (powerful sword from the Transformers comics)
Ghost 2-headed carrion bird: Qinglongyan (sword from Chinese myths)
Ashtail: Rhindon (from Susan Cooper's "The Dark Is Rising" sequence)
Ghostcrawler: Riptide (from Percy Jackson series)
Exposed Brain Slithid: Rosenasty (double wannabe lightsabers from the Wii game "No More Heroes")
Gondria: Saba (the talking tiger sword from one of those early seasons of Power Rangers)
Abyssal Depths Crab: Sikanda (from "the Neverending Story" novel)
Green Rune Dog: Valmanway (from "Castlevania" video game)
Arcturius: Zendudao (the magic poison-sword from an episode of Ranma 1/2)
Chromaggus: Zulfiqar (bifurcated Arabic sword of legend)
In my own weird way, naming them after swords make sense. The pets are living (game-wise) weapons, and extensions of my attacks, I guess. I'll shut up now...

Aeliel, I love your theme. If I make another hunter, I might steal it.
My only hunter to really have a theme (mainly because Aoani can't settle on hers) is
Nöelle. Her pets are all red and have Christmas names. I have planned most of her stables and have awesome names like Cinnamon the devilsaur, Candycane the tallstrider, Myrrh the worm, Tinsel the windserpent, Ivy the beetle, and Carol the corehound (because of their family skill, obviously!) planned. I wish I could play her more, cause I am in love with this theme!!

Taey has no theme. Just pets I really like.
Sann is a black and white theme. Pets must be one or both of those colours.
Kay is going to be unique rare skins only.
Making a troll hunter who is going to be blue - blue hair, blue(ish) pets.
And another NE hunter who will be purple/blue/black/white.

Hmmm a theme? I don't *really* have one for either of my main hunters...but I have a hunter that is about level 20ish that has pets named after characters from the show LOST. Evandelle has a knack for naming her pets after gods, goddesses, or myths of some sort, and then Bess I noticed has a lot of pets whose names start with K that I didn't mean to do.

That ever happen to anyone?

Khau's theme is mostly pets that have earth-hued skins including browns, greys, greens, golds, and blacks. Pet names don't follow any specific rules but are predominately no longer 2 to 3 syllables long.
Auroryn's theme showcases a preference for dragon-esque or mythical type beasts such as dragonhawks, corehounds, warpstalkers, and windserpents. A few exceptions are made however to include 2 cats and her beloved fox. Pet skins tend to stay within a specific color range of whites, reds, pinks, and purples. Pet names are themed around mythology, astronomy, flowers, or fire.
Kadija's theme is all about color. The more colorful the pet, the more inclined she is to tame it. This can include two-toned, multi-toned, and brightly colored pets but does not necessarily restrict darker colored skins so long as there is more than a single color represented.
Niabi's theme is strictly limited to blue and white pet skins only.
Ghiselle's theme is strictly limited to brown and gold pet skins only. Pet names tend to be a bit more relaxed and cute compared to my other hunter's pets.
Rosaria currently has no theme. This character is still under development.
Lilyth's theme is strictly limited to pets that have black, white, or silvery-grey skins.
Synestra's theme showcases a preference for more sinister-ish looking pets such as spiders, serpents, demon hounds, and ravagers. Pet skins tend to be black, red, or purple. Pet names are more likely to be inspired from creatures/monsters found in literature or demon folklore.

Quite unintentionally, I've started giving my pets Finnish names on my baby hunter Niara. Well, with the exception of my starter pet, Ami, which is French for "friend". I have Kirottu, the purple demon hound (Bayne), which means "cursed"; Kesakko, a gray cat with white spots, which means "freckle"; Valko, a white bear (Bjarn), which means "white". I also just tamed Vultros tonight and haven't come up with a name for him yet.
Edit: I think I shall name Vultros "Halu", which means "hunger".

I like the names, but just to make a quick correction or two, unless you're Finnish yourself, in which case ignore everything I write below.
Valkoinen is the actual word for white in Finnish, though I agree that Valko works better for a pet than does the real word.
Grats on Vultros, he's wonderful!
Halu...hmh, how could I explain this adequately. Haluta is to want/to desire. Halu, is a desire/want.
Hunger is "Nälkä" and hungry is "Nälkäinen".

That's what I get for using Google's translator!!! I really like the Finnish language, the words are so pretty and fun to say (er, at least when I repeat out loud what the translator spews out at me), but I am the furthest thing from being educated in it.
I don't intend to change the names, mainly because I like them. Halu gave me a ton of definitions, one of which was hunger and another was craving...the rest were along the lines of "desire", "urge", etc. But I liked how it was short and masculine-sounding.

And I was going for the noun version, too. Like a carrion bird is hunger personified. I hope that makes sense?
I appreciate your help nonetheless! Perhaps in the future I will consult you for my Finnish pet names so that I get them right and avoid embarrassment.

They're good names, so I'm glad you're not changing them! Just wanted to let you know, in case you were dead set on having a name that really means what it's meant to mean. Luckily, Halu works in terms of a craving. It means a lot of things (not hunger, though, sadly) and I still think it's a suitable name because of the reasons you listed, and also because you WANTED him. Or, as we'd put it in Finnish: sinä halusit hänet.
You're welcome to ask for word advice any time!

My themes...
At first, Pralinka's pets were all LeonardNimoy, BillShatner (because Spock and Kirk are no-go) and other things Star Trek.
But then I tamed Arcturis. I couldn't find a name fitting him better than Polaris, the Northern Star. And so, my theme came to be.
Pralinka's theme is stars, constellations and astronomy. With several exceptions, namely Enterprise, JethroGibbs, LeonardNimoy, Moony, Nugat and Padfoot. For some reason, I have 3 brightest stars in Orion, as well as Orion himself... But then, of course, Orion is The Hunter.

Check it out
here
My baby hunter, Bajaderka, didn't initially start with a theme, so her starting dog is called
SemperFido. But as I went on to tame my first tenancity pet, a black boar, I realised I'm not using the full potential of the fact that all my characters are named after sweets. My pets should be just as sweet! So her boar is called SherbetLemon.
Her theme became Harry Potter sweets!
You can check it out
here, but it's not too impressive a stable at the moment.
I don't have any colour theme, but I do favour pets that are purple, blue, black and sometimes white. Or really, really big!

Ebonrook's stable, generally, is a mish-mash. There is a strong black and white pet theme, but there are enough wild cards in there that break it (Spiteflayer, Aotona, Nuramoc, and Ghostcrawler) simply because I like the skins.
As for names, it's primarily a literary theme with a healthy dose of mythological names and Goetic demons (Three runed demon dogs named Leraje, Berith, and Seire, for example).
Some names are...
Agravaine (Black Lion) [Knight from the King Arthur mythos]
Aldonza (Black Wolf) [Character from Don Quixote]
Carlotta (Spiteflayer) [Pompous diva from Phantom of the Opera]
Pico (Black Owl) [Lead character from The Book of Flying]
Valmont (Black Fox) [The Vicomte de Valmont from Les Liaisons Dangereuses]
Virgil (Blue-Grey Vulture) [Named after the poet]
...Thennnn there are the stoplight colored raptors; Scooter, Sparky, and Lucky. Somewhat of a long story there. XD They're the combo breakers of my naming theme.
