Just thought of something, worms have bright colors, as do chimaera's and hydra's, what about seeing what you can do with them?

Wow that was very kind. Thank you :)

I'll see what I can do :) Just working on a few mastiffs right now :) Hopefully have something to post tonight or tomorrow :)

Mastiffs!

Since there are only four mastiff colours in the game, most kind of monochromatic, and same-ish, I thought I'd give them a try. I expected it to be a bit dull but I soon got interested in what was showing up. These aren't radically different or anything, just a rounding out of the group.

One thing to note when viewing these: for some reason mastiff skins are VERY grainy. I tried to smooth it out a bit but if you look too closely you'll still notice quite a bit of "snow" on these. This is just the way mastiffs are, even the in-game ones. I guess I never looked that closely before! The darker they get the more exaggerated the effect is. And of course with inflated images like these it's WAY more obvious than in the game. They're also fairly lacking in contrast, as if they're a bit foggy.

Anyway...

One thing I found was that I was able to generate some interesting two-tone ones just by mashing up the colour channels. I generated a whole series of black-and-tan or black-red ones and chose a couple to show you. One with just the chops coloured and one with the whole chops and underbelly coloured. Kinda like a rottweiler. I can easily adjust the colour on these... either more light-tan or more red.

ImageImage

Oddly, out of the four colours they chose to put in the game, none were plain old brown! A couple of different shades:

ImageImageImage

I toyed with the idea of a white one, but had trouble getting the texture and contrast right. They just came out unnaturally pale and shiny. The best I could do was this very pale grey. Much like the colour of a great dane:

Image

As a labrador lover, it kind of disappointed me that there was no true yellow one - the in-game "yellow" more a light red. I tried to generate a more sandy yellow. I kinda like this particular one:

Image

I also tried to generate a different red to the in-game ones. So instead of another monochromatic one, I tried one with a white belly and black chops. The end result is kind of like the colouring of a boxer. Lightening the belly and chest any further was difficult and I didn't want to waste any more time on it, but I probably could have made it even more like a boxer if I had:

ImageImage

And a tan one that was derived from them, so it's very similar in style. Again, very boxer-like:

You have such a knack for picking out these colour schemes, I love seeing them!

Though the animation oddness of the mastiffs has prevented me from truly liking them in game, I'd love to see some more skins added. The black and tan ones are great, and I really, really like that grey/white version!

The last one is also nice, the saturated colours look really good and stand out from the washed-out ones we have now (not that those are bad, just very sombre).

I've noticed the same thing regarding the 'graininess' on a lot of Cataclysm and recent models. There's a softness to them. Blizzard seems to be moving away from the stark contrast of their earlier work. Sometimes it looks better or more realistic, but I also find myself missing the brighter colours and darker shades. For example, I find there isn't much that truly looks 'black' in Cataclysm. It's all just a dark grey shade, they don't go all the way to a true black any more, and it leaves everything with a sort of muted feel.

Aww, I love Labs too! *hugs Lab skin* I think my favorite skin though is the brown with grey muzzle, although I like your Rotti as well.

Wow, I love these mastiff skins! Although everyone that you related to a different dog breed my mind went "Man wouldn't it be awesome to see a rottweiler/labrador/boxer/great dane in game." I know that's a lot of wishful thinking, but I would totally tame some of these colored ones in place of the actual breeds. :)

Ooh, how about Ravagers? They seem like they'd be a lot of fun to work with, so many options. I'd love to see a black and white one, similar to the silithid/wasp skins in that vein.

Ignore..

Worms!

As Ceravan requested, some worm skin mash-ups! :)

Generating new worm skins was like shooting fish in a barrel. Well... OK... those two things are probably nothing alike. But the worm skins were easy.

One thing I found I could do easily, but you don't see in the game at all, is generate ones with a different belly colour to the back colour, so there's a few of those here.

This is just a few out of a few out of the piles of them I generated.

Remember when viewing these (as with many things in this thread) that the textures aren't all that detailed to begin with and you're viewing them much more closely than you would in the game, so they tend to look a bit rougher.

A couple of grey/black ones with coloured bellies. Blue; indigo:

A range of greens... Bright chartreuse; Grass-green with a pinkish belly; All-cyan; Cyan with an orange belly:

ImageImageImageImage

A range of purples very different to the one in the game. Indigo; Magenta; Purple with orange belly; Lavender with yellow belly:

ImageImageImageImage

The Barbie Fun Worm. I actually posted one like this back in the pink pets post:

This is one of my favourites. Stately mahogany with a creamy buff chest:

A range of orange to reds. Orange; Peach with blue belly; Light terra cotta:

ImageImageImage

Silver-grey with blue belly:

Image

Bright sky blue. Perhaps a bit too saturated but I left it as it is:

The Aussie colours, green and gold. I desaturated the belly a bit but later realized I probably did it too much:

Ooo, thanks, I'll take that as a challenge! :) While I'm working on worms I'll see if I can get anything interesting out of jormungar, but then I'll try ravagers :)

Jormungar!

And continuing on with the worms, some Jormungar.

I didn't expect much from them, but was surprised at what I thought looked good.

One thing I did aim for was a burgundy red tint, which I thought might match the sombre colouring well. Here's a small selection of the results, with different body colours. I'd probably choose the first or second, but each one seems to bring something different to it so I thought I'd post a few. Black, Dark Green, Dark Blue, Grey, Mauve/Blue:

ImageImageImageImageImage

Pale, white grey. Based on the in-game "white" one but I tried to remove all the remaining colour:

Image

Brown back with indigo body. I thought it provided a nice contrast, and the brown looks quite realistic:

Image

Amber:

Dark red back, green body:

A couple of Jormungar that definitely don't look like they belong in the snows of Northrend. I can imagine them in a more lush area. Both I find quite striking, though. I really love how well the iridescent indigo and dark green works on the first one and it surprised me as one of my favourites:

ImageImage

And following on in the tradition of the last worm post, Barbie's Fun Snow Worm (or perhaps for a WoW theme: Haris Pilton's Enormous Hairy Pink Worm?). It actually reminds me of a powdered jam doughnut and makes me hungry. What that says about me is probably not good to speculate.

lovin the green and sky blue worms, and if they actually made a jormunger with the burgandy spikes, I would definitely think of taming one.
