@Wykea: I love that your pets have personalities that when you read them beside the picture of the pet-- it really does seem like you can picture them acting like that!
@Corpse: I love your theme idea, i myself cant seem to stray from the imaginary language of Elvish but now im contemplating going with a specific theme to fit my 'all white' pets for my new troll hunter who i will eventually play once i am able to renew my game subscription and i wear my worgen out till bordem overtakes me xD
Edit: I wanted to share with the thread the website i refer people to if they are looking for the
Elvish Language.
Its D&D Elvish, done by The Grey Company and everyone who has helped add new words to its ever-filling dictionary-- it is a small language and i dont know how often its updated so there wont always be a word up there that your looking for but if you go to an online theasorus(?) you can find different words that mean the same thing and you can try your luck at that ;D

Too bad my server/guild doesn't seem to have too many RPers on it lately. Cata seems to have induced rapid burnout.

I have couple of themes going, or gone.
First, two of my Spiritbeasts have "spirit-y" names
Misty (released), Gondria
Dimecho, Karoma
Two of my spiritbeasts have electric-ratiation-names
Gamma, Arcturis
Watts (released), Skoll
Two of my pets have Polynesian names
Haukea, Loque'nahak (Haukea is Hawai'ian for white snow)
Konani, Kurken (Hawai'ian for bright)
Maitai, Brilliant Claysraper (Maitai is Tahitian for good, also a cocktail)
My chimaera merged/intruded on the last theme by being callled Piñacolada, since I was listening to the song "Escape" (If you like Piña Coladas....)
My worms have their own little noodle-theme
Udon (released), jormungar from Storm Peaks
Soba, aqua worm from Maraudon
My cats all over my hunters are part of a naming theme
Umar (deleted with my first hunter), snow leopard (from the word Amur)
Ummra (released), ghost saber (twisting feminine version, Umars "mate")
Ramu, dark drown tiger (rearranging the letters)
Possible additions to this theme would be Amur and Ruma, but Ruma is out since in my mothertongue it means ugly, and cats are not ugly
And the latest theme is ancient Egyptian names
Ramses, Sambas
Nefertari, Blue Madexx (Ramses IIs first/favoured queen)
Maat, turquoise scarab beetle (goddess of justice)
Serket, Green Madexx (goddess of scorpios, snakes, healing venomous injuries)
Nekhbet, Spiteflayer (vulture goddess)

My main hunter doesn't have a stable theme other than "pets I like." Neither do her pets have a particular naming theme. I try to just pick something that fits the animal in some way, or if the beast in question comes with its own name (because it was a named quest mob/rare spawn) I in most cases retain that one. Nothing too unusual or exciting there... she's got Sir Prowly the cat, Hearteater the crocolisk, Krush the green devilsaur, and etc.
My lvl. 70 hunter alt, on the other hand, I'm quite proud of. She has a "firey pets" stable theme and I had tons of fun coming up with suitably groan-worthy puns!
So I have Capsaican the worgen hunter with burning ambition, and her loyal companions: Blazorback the torched battleboar, Coruscat the shimmering Pogeyan cougar, Mongrill the branded plaguehound, Charantula the lava spider, Incinsect the firefly, Roxidize the Tanaris fire roc, Croastacean the Blasted Lands fel-tainted crab, and Searberus the core hound.

They sound like Pokemon... Especially Charantula and Mongrill.

As my character is named from Norse mythology, I try to keep that in mind while naming pets. Some are just too characterful to not have a cheeky name that comes to me though. Btw, longtime lurker here, first post. Been pet collecting since vanilla, and Petopia has saved more more hours of scouring thottbot/wowhead than I care to count. Thanks!
Many names get reused due to liking them so much I want them for both BM and Surv. I try to keep it in line with their abilities/skins though.
"CitizenSnips"(Ghostcrawler)
"Gungnir"(King Krush)
"Shale Spider" (Random until I get a hold of the rare)
"Olthoi" (Ant Style, Same name as my Buru)
"Bowser" (Terrorpene)
"Hel" (Madexx Red and Blue, not sure which I like better)
"Loki"(Shadowclaw)
"Muninn" (Undead Hawk)
"Ulfr"(Name used since vanilla for my Wolf, current incarnation is Lone Hunter)
"Gullinbursti" (Flaming Boar)
"Nurgle" (My Pride and joy, Ooze model croc)
"Surtr" (MC Core Hound. took some time away from wow so haven't got to Chromag yet)
"Ulfr" (Skoll)
"Wasp" (Black Skin, unused so far)
"Jörmungandr" (White Outland skin Wind Serpent)
"Jörmungandr" (Black Skin Northrend Worm)
"Gungnir" (Green Skin Raptor)
"Níðhöggr" (Black/Green Gezzarak)
"Rhino" (Just a rhino, unused)

No kidding? I have no idea if any of those are Pokemon names! I came up with all of them independently.
Thank you for the tip; I guess I will do a Google search later and check it out. If any of those are real Pokemon, it would be kind of a funny coincidence, but I will have to come up with new names. I don't want people to think I'm copying off Nintendo. :\ I just like puns.

I used to play on Kirin Tor. A lot of RP died out during the end of BC/early Wrath. Still a few great RPers on the server but when I log onto my alts there now I feel like I'm playing on a normal PvE server. =(
Anyways, here is Wassa's current pet grid picture with all pets plus names and genders. I try to go with trollish sounding names for RP. Most names are African or Japanese in origin. A few names I took from animals at the local zoo I used to work at. Only non-RP name is my fox Sabrina named after my rabbit that recently passed away.

-Well, today I made a hunter set that's just for giggles, won't be leveled or anything. Myndee the hunter and Buttons the wolf. It's a reference to Animaniacs.
-Firewing, my main huntress, has a green devilsaur named Bayne, following the common mispelling of words for devilsaurs (See Mosh, Dred, Krush, Skorn.) and because he nearly was the bane of me. Poured a lot of gold and effort into getting him.
-Azunara, my Nesingwary hunter, has a nightsaber named Maurice. I want to get a white rat one day, it'll be named Soap. Maurice is a reference to the Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett, so Maurice is a smooth, street-smart, talking cat. Soap would be a rat that can read.
-Solaira, my Hunter Pet Challenge char, has pets named only after Pokemon characters in the pokemon roleplay on the forums. She's also named after my character.
-Firewing also has Iorek, the armored wolf, who is a reference to Iorek the armored bear from the Golden Compass.
-Fire also had a white moth named Firefly for a while, in reference to their ability, Serenity Dust, and in turn, referenced the TV series, Firefly, which I didn't watch much, but my parents did, so I know of it.
Generally, my pets are combo names, or simple names. They can be references to things, or names I make up by slinging syllables together. (See Zerak, for example.)

Funny you should mention that, as, if I ever got him, I was going to named green Madexx "Scrapper", after the leader of the G1 Constructicons.
Scrapper, report!
All present are accounted for, noble leader: Scavenger, Mixmaster, Long Haul, Bonecrusher, Hook, and myself.
...now I'm wondering what pets would work best for the names of the other Constructicons...

I did have a booze theme going for Kalhoun's pets for a while, but when I found out I couldn't use the name Whiskey or Bacardi, I gave up. I did have the white wolf corehound for a while, and it was named Moonshine, which I think really fit it. Now all of his pets are just named simple things that reflect either their looks or personality.
I do have a little "spirit" theme for my spirit beasts - Ghost (Karoma) and Phantom (Loque'nahak). I also had Spectre (Ghostcrawler) and Mist (Gondria). My Skoll breaks the theme, though, and is named Kilowatt, to reflect on his electric look (and Kalhoun's an engineer, so he'd know what a kilowatt is).
The only pet who is actually named after something in particular is Sharptooth my King Krush - named for the T-rex in the movie "Land Before Time" (which I saw in theatres as a child and mostly blame for my obsession with dinosaurs). I figured it still matched as something Kalhoun would name him, because... well... he does have quite a few sharp teeth.

D'aww, I love that name for Devilsaurs. x) Land Before Time was a favourite of mine as well growing up, and equally played a role in my own love of dinosaurs. ^^

I don't really have many themes going. I mean, I named my ravager Tomato and my yellow worm is named Noodle... Oh, and I have a raptor named Berry!
My favorite name is what I named my Skoll: Ruzgar. It feels so RIGHT and it seems like an orc name to me. :3
PS: I love Tomato and I love his name, even if people pick on me for it. HE'S AWESOME AND I LOVE HIM AND THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS! *hugs Tomato, carefully avoiding his spikes* Some people just don't get it.

Most of Orrik's pets are named after Kingdom Hearts/Final Fantasy (Sora, Riku, Kairi, Terra, Ventus, Aqua, Leon, Yuffie, Cloud, Axel, Aerith) , super heroes/sidekicks (Jaime "The Blue Beetle", Oliver "The Green Arrow", Kaldurahm "Aqualad", Cassius "Firebreather", Link), TV Shows (Lance, Anakin, Gwendolyn, Noah), web comic characters (Ashton, Renard), or just random names (Jasper, Demos, Bastian).
Yusei's are pretty much all web comic characters (Alaric, Natani, Kaiser, Zen, Scout, Jax) thus far with a few that I made up myself (Speedy, Finn, Riley, Click).

I DEFINITELY think the name of a pet is very important--if I give a pet a name that doesn't quite seem to fit, sometimes I just won't click with it, and wind up abandoning
I am also in the same boat of spending AGES finding the right names for my pets. I spend hours looking through Thesaurus entries to find the right combination of "feelings" in one word, or browsing Web articles on various mythologies, or looking through lists of songs' lyrics looking for inspiration. Hell, I even MADE a WoW pet name generator just to help me name them (found in my sig if you're interested). A few example of my main's pets:
Ochre
Talisman
Amulet (see above ;D )
Behemoth
Leviathan (sort of a matched set with Behemoth, and Leviathan also represents temptation/gateway to Hell)
Valak (the name of a demon who reveals the location of hidden serpents; also close to the name of the guildmate who dropped everything to help me tame)
Malice
Widowmaker
Zodiac
Shiver (my favorite pet, I think!)
Chaos
Banshee
Atropos, Windbiter, Thrakk and Grim:

Derelict
My Forsaken hunter has pets whose names are all negative emotions or states. Bane (Bayne), Woe, Misery, Torment, Voodoo, Grief, Bleak, Gloom, Sorrow, Agony, Vex, Hex, Jinx, Rage, Horror, Blue, Rotclaw, Malice, Vice, Spite, Chaos, Ruin, Sin, Wrath, Fury, Avarice, Shame and Regret are the ones I've come up with so far. The ones she's actually tamed:
Torment
Grief
Jinx
Rage
Wrath
Vice
+ Bayne, who is the rare plaguehound by the same name, and Rotclaw, a diseased black bear.

I've gone for a Discworld naming theme for Tydarus' pets - not all of them, because I want the name to really fit and not feel forced. Terry Pratchett's one of my favorite authors and it was awesome coming up with names to fit the theme. I have:

Otto (von Chriek)

Binky (Yes, Zaricotl is not a horse but this was too hilarious to pass up)

Detritus (This will change since I decided I don't like this model at all)

Offler (a color changer is definitely a crocodile god)

Vimes

The Librarian

Moist (von Lipwig)

A'tuin

Vetinari (because he's not really black and a true Assassin never wears black. Also he's skinny as hell)

Angua
My Petopian hunter also has a white turtle named Om. I would love to have a Carrot but I can't think of anything that fits. Also, I think if I named a pet after Nobby Nobbs I would get reported.
