Farmed up some Ethereum Keys so I could test Porfus the Gem Gorger: he's
tameable and still uses the BasiliskOutland_Yellow skin.

I don't know why they need two IDs either, but I think I answered my own question: looking at their loot tables on Wowhead, ID#39658 has Charred Basilisk Meat on its table (used for the quest Walking the Dog), while ID#48724 does not. I am therefore fairly certain that the IDs switch when you pick up that quest. I haven't done that quest on my hunter yet, so I can grab it and see if the basilisks are still tameable, but without some way to check IDs in-game I cannot guarantee with 100% accuracy that that is indeed when the IDs switch.
Oooh, you could be right that they're for that one quest!
And yes, there is a way to determine the id of any NPC in the game. Create a macro of the following:
/run print("Target NPC ID:", tonumber((UnitGUID("target")):sub(-12, -9), 16))
Add the button to your toolbar. Every time you target something and hit that button it'll tell you the id

Handy macro is handy. I'll fly out to Hyjal and see if I can get a confirmation.

Checked the IDs, and the basilisks in my phase are already ID#39658 despite not having done the quest yet, so I can't confirm exactly when the IDs switch. (I was, however, already "neutral" with the Twilight cultists, so that might be the trigger).
I can confirm that they're tameable though.

Thanks a lot for that

I was just farming more keys to check him myself. Whew, almost all done!
Just one question.. are you taming every one as you check them or just beast loring them? I'm just asking because some things are flagged for taming but can't be tamed in practice due to (i) the "already controlled" error or (ii) too frequent interrupts/stuns.

Awesome! On my template toon they were the other id. So that's both kinds checked.

Wow, I completely forgot about the teleporters. There's one in Booty Bay as well (or at least there used to be, back in the day; don't know if it's still there).
Anyway, I went back and tame-tested all of the basilisks I previously reported on. Everything checks out except the Servant of Antu'sul (which I see you already noted) and Deatheye, who wasn't up when I checked (I can't imagine him having any problems though).
Double-Confirmed Tameable:
Cold Eye Basilisk
Dampscale Basilisk
Dampscale Devourer
Glasshide Gazer
Ironeye the Invincible
Ironspine Threshalisk
Ragestone Threshalisk
Ragestone Trampler
Spinescale Basilisk
Spinescale Matriarch
Stonegazer
Sul'lithuz Abomination
Sul'lithuz Broodling
Sul'lithuz Sandcrawler

The Booty Bay porter moved to Grom'Gol.
Also, I know what happened to Deatheye. *winks at Wain*

I updated the list to include the new rare purple with blue crest. I think it's my favourite colour of all. There are only a few colour combos missing now. Noah has incredibly managed to add almost all of them! And I know there's a couple of corrections coming up to allow for skins that are on beasts with taming problems.
Thanks again guys for all your help

Soooo.........
When will they make Petrify actually useful, is my question. I love these, I really do. I want one. But right now their ability is pretty much as flat out useless as they come. Either make it a normal 2-sec interrupt that DOESN'T stop dps, or make it last long enough to be CC.
As much as I wanted basilisks, I really can't justify wasting a space for them as long as their ability, frankly, sucks.
Also, does anyone know if the bad separation/blending on the old world basilisks' foreheads is just a model viewer thing or if they really have a line across their forehead like someone painted with a ruler?

It's like that. In some it looks fine. In others a bit more jarring. Sometimes the complementary colours actually look pretty cool.

Deatheye has a sound-on-click!! When tamed, he makes basilisk/crocolisk hissing and growling sounds. I'M IN LOVE! I wish the ability was more useful; he's completely fused himself with my heart on the PTR. I couldn't bring myself to abandon him to test other things.

They really like the purple trim on the basilisks, eh?
And anyone else wish they made the Basilisk skill usable on allies? >_>

That would certainly make it more useful!
Edit: Thanks for this thread, Wain. I am having the hardest time settling on which basilisk I will tame. Possible choices:

......

<--would add this last one too, if the Jadespine Basilisk were tamable!

I made a thread on the beta forums about how bad Petrify is. If people have other suggestions (like selfcasting the Banish) do feel free to add them.
They've changed other pet skills in the past, hopefully if enough people complain they'll at least just turn it into a normal stun.

Thanks. It would be sad if basilisks ended up unused because people don't feel their ability is up to scratch. At least it'll bring some awareness to the issue. Maybe it just needs a tweak.
As for untameable basilisks, I expect the Jadespines will be tameable in the next build or so. Some others may change colour as well, to make accessible colours that are otherwise locked away by phasing. And hopefully maybe one or two more?

I've added my voice to the petrify thread, but a thought occurs: I believe the duration of petrify is so short so it won't eclipse other options (since equivalent abilities like lullaby and bad manner break on damage). We may not see it changed on those grounds, at least not if it continues to work like banish.

Oh that would be lovely, because I do believe it's my favorite!
