OH my god heart freaking attack.
I was running along just now and ran into a foot print HOVERING IN THE AIR! I followed it then remembered OMG HIS TRACKS ARE BACKWARDS! OTHER WAY OTHER WAYYYYYYYY!
Sure enough by the time I got back the hovering track was gone, but I found another just up the hill.. then lost the trail as I was firing off flairs.
I lost the trail then and saw another hunter in the area... then I happened by another track.. another flair.. no sign.. more tracks.. now I'm seeing them appear. I run a little ahead and shoot down a flair.. and there's my pink baby!

I never hit tame beast so fast before xD
I have ALL graphic settings at the lowest setting. Makes things look cruddy (and sadly only way my lappy will run wow x.x) but the prints stick out even more this way!
MAN Maybe I should post pet wants here more often. The luck this site seems to bring!

Grats! Finding Pat was such a relief for me, since his trail was so hard to track. The footprints stick out much more in your screenshot than they did for me (at least how I remember). I probably should have turned all my settings to low, I had everything on ultra except for ground clutter. Good thing to try on my next rare hunt.

Yeah having all the settings low sort of washes out/stretches the textures on the ground. Very ugly and blury, but it made the prints stick out. For my very first rare find, I had no idea what I was looking for.. I was expecting some very hard to find tracks.. but BAM there it was.. the first one I ran into was acually hovering in the air about head height to my hunter. I've heard of them being under ground.. but floating? I would have SSed it, but I was to busy scrambleing after the bird.. the wrong way at first XD

I don't like having to compromise my settings to find tiny tracks to tame a pet which are backwards to boot. IMO that's just poor/lazy planning. They should have found another way to make the tracking part a challenge. Lowering settings or spawn camping a path is just not all that interesting or fun to me.

You don't HAVE to do either of those things. Tracking is perfectly possible with higher settings and wandering around looking for tracks is also still viable (minus the sections of phased paths) and sometimes preferable.

Hey man. No one said anything about HAVING to have settings low to be able to track. You still can at any setting. -I- just use the lowest settings as I'm on an old laptop and it chugs as it is in wow at about 4-10 fps with low settings. The only setting I have up one notch is particles so I can see thing's sparkling easier for some quests.
Trust me if I could with out stalling my game to a halt, I would have everything maxed and enjoy the real beauty of the game.

As to Portent's tracks, I followed him exclusively last night and I can tell you two things. He leaves a track every 15 steps he takes but, sometimes they are completely invisible and under ground level. You can actually see the tooltip saying "dusty tracks" when you mouse over where the track should be even though there is no portion of the track visible. When it happens twice in a row, it makes it a lot harder to know where the next track will show. There are also a lot of partially visible tracks including some where just the edge shows. On the beta server, there definitely were not as many underground tracks as on my live server, Draka-US.

I hate you. Naw, seriously, congratulations!
I finally got my hunter to 86 and have been looking for that darned crane to no avail. I've spent most of my time where it paths near the brewery. So far, all I've seen there was one of the Yaungol rares spawn and I even missed out on that. In the short time it took to summon a pet and get to it, an Alliance pally got it. Ah well. I want that danged crane, durnit.

I stumbled across a track for Portent yesterday withe my settings how I normally run them not changed to make it easier. His tracks really stick out noticeably so he was pretty easy to track except for a couple spots where they disappear in the hillside, but like mentioned above, you can find them by mousing over.
Fortunately I was able to find a nice home for him with a guild mate.

I was looking for the white tiger last night. It was late and I was extremely tired. I found the tracks but wasn't sure which way they were going. I was at the start of the trail on the south side of the map. Was I supposed to head north to try find the pet?

Well, since there's only one way they could have been going at that point, definitely.
In general, just follow them backwards and you'll find your pet.

I wasn't sure if that was where the trail started or ended. Then I took so long to follow them that they disappeared.

That's why you follow them backwards, so you know which way to go. The heels lead you the right way.
My video here should help.

Now that I know what I am looking for I have been able to find each rare thus far (but the highest lv ones, I'm still only 88) a few times, and have been hunters marking them and following them while looking for a hunter who wants em.
So any hunter on Argent Dawn alli side or on a realm that cross's with it, feel free to give me a poke.
I personally don't know how to do the 'pull someone from another realm to mine' thing works or I'd offer that too ;P

Battletag friend someone and invite them to party. Done.

Just by faction and US/EU.

I've snuck into PvE realms that way.
