Not the jerkhole assaults now, when twenty or thirty alliance would go there, poke it, and wait for the horde to come a knockin'. It just.....doesn't have the same appeal anymore. For one the guards are way to easy to kill. For another, and I hate to harp, but resilience really kind of killed the feel of it too.
I remember those days......I was a little more gung-ho back then and would gladly fly into battle at level thirty against level sixty characters. Of course, I spent a lot of time in the graveyard, but it was fun nonetheless. World PvP these days just isn't the same. They can make PvP-dedicated zones all they want, but it still doesn't have that same feel that it did back then.

It really doesn't. And PvP zones are nice, but.....there's just something about that feeling of holding off twenty or thirty horde/alliance for no profit, just because they are attacking something on your side. Or of assaulting some enemy stronghold just to get the opposing faction to come out and play. That especially anxious feeling you get when you KNOW that you are one of the main attackers/defenders, and you die and are waiting to come back, so that you can get back to the battle to help ensure that the line holds.
You just.....don't get that anymore.

I agree, PvP is lacking. I was one of those unfortunates who missed the epic AVs. The long, log in, queue, play in AV for a bit, log out, and the next day, the battle still is going on. Those battles. I was slow to level, so when I got to AV, people didn't care. It was all, "Outlands! Wheee!"
But one day, I got lucky on Fire. I had a AV last almost an hour, both sides struggling. Morale support was filling the channels, people were getting healed, and the Alliance, trapped by the Horde and unable to go on, wore down the line until the Horde had no more reinforcements. It was sheer epic, charging in, knowing that we've just got to kill 15, 20 more and we win, ensuring that our 50 odd reinforcements don't die.
So I got a taste of some of the old stuff, and I miss it too.

Now see, THIS is why I hate pvp.
Nesingwary is a PvE server. I like it that way. If I want to pvp, I go to battlegrounds, but I'm really not a fan in general so I usually won't.
Well I go to try and turn in a quest to Alexstrasza on Taigi. There's a griffon there standing right where she is, which is a little annoying, but whatever, I can probably still click on her.
Too late I realize the bastard is flagged pvp. Which means clicking on him by accident starts an attack. Ohcrap.
I immediately stop attacking him, but it's too late, I'm flagged. Worse, the Wormrest guards are RIGHT THERE and start beating the living daylights out of me because I initiated a fight on their turf. Death in less than five seconds. -_-; Afterwards the guy just stood near my body for a while. I ended up having to wait out the entire 5 minutes as a ghost. -_-;
I realize it's a baiting technique, to get pve'ers to get flagged, but argh. WHY.

There has been a gang of PvPers on my server who did the following trick:
There was a gnome, level 20ish but flagged for PvP.
As soon as any Horde attacked, 4 alliance rogues jumped out of hiding and attacked and ganked the horde player.
If you didn't attack, the gnome started being rude with gestures like /rasp or /chicken.
Wasn't very nice.

That was a typical Alliance "strategy" for a very long time, and I only ever saw Alliance players try to carry it out. My guild has a PvP forum, and the subheader for it reads ""Ok, I see human priest." "Right, 3 rogues and 2 Night Elves."", standing as testament to this oft-attempted Alliance trick.

Yup, we had a ganker on my old realm NOTORIOUS for that sort of thing. Everyone horde-side would eventually ask if it was this one guy (and his pack of cronies) whenever any major pvp incident went down.

Is it still normal to gank all of Crossroads to challenge some high levels for open PvP?
How much I hated that...

Yes, except they flee as quickly as you come on your eighties, and then return when you leave.

Sorry to burst your bubble, Anansi, but this was a largely horde only trick on my realms. And generally the targets weren't high level, they'd try to antagonize lower levels in STV or Arathi with it. The horde also LOVED to follow that tauren through STV and just wait for some unknowing Alliance to attack her. Cue gankfest.
It's all subjective to your individual experience. I've played as both Horde and Alliance, and on my servers the jerkier of the bunch are by far the Horde. The alliance have their shining moments. (("Have they left Crossroads yet?" "No...." "I'd REALLY like to finish this stupid quest...")) But by and large on Scarlet Crusade and Sentinels, they just can't hold a candle to the oh so wonderful horde. The greatest offenders inside of the horde tend to be the Undead, and the Blood Elves. I've had kind Orcs, Tauren, and trolls, and I've helped out my fair share of them. For some reason it's always one of the other two races who goes out of their way to gank or otherwise grief me.
As I said, however, that's going to vary from server to server. Also my Horde leveling experience was back during vanilla and TBC, haven't done much with my troll shaman since Wrath hit, so maybe it's changed since then.

It's kinda weird how a race in the game is usually attributed to mean spirited acts, isn't it? I've heard about undead being nasty. And in my experience I usually get ganked by night elves or gnomes. Maybe it's just something about the character type that's appealing to the kind of person who would do that sort of thing?

Still mostly incorrect in my experience. I primarily play a gnome character, and the meanest players I encounter are usually tauren or orcs. I constantly get a /spit or a "Does some strange movements", most likely someone /e punts the gnome.

I think a lot of people are also biased. I think (There's a theory on this, I was explained it a few days ago.) what people are having is you something that proves your theory, and point it out, and then follow after proving every other theory. Then you see something that disproves your theory and you ignore it.
Humans as a whole can't help it. We ALL do it. I do it, you do it, political leaders do it. EVERYONE does it, and it's not our fault. It's our nature. And that's what is in play. I'm Alliance. I get ganked by Horde, and believe all Horde are nasty. For everytime I get ganked or see evidence, it furthers my point. When I see a Horde do nice things, or an Alliance do mean things, I say "Whatever" and ignore it.
And yeah. We're all biased and can't say THAT much about either side, because we love our particular side and will stand by it.

Hey, I'm not doing that. I've helped the horde out plenty of times, and I've had them help me. Same flip-flopped. If I see a member of the opposing faction in trouble then I'll help, so long as they weren't doing something stupid like trying to steal all the mobs in an area. I know without a doubt that most members of the horde/alliance aren't jerkwads. But you get a few who make everyone else look bad. On extreme servers, you get a lot more then a few. It's just going to vary based on experience.

I can hate either sides, depending on whitch character I'm playing. If I'm playing my horde and a group of allies attack crossroads then I hate alliance. If I'm playing alliance and I'm being spam killed then I hate horde. I play both sides so I don't really care about this ally vs horde thing. Alot of people take it too far...

Can't say I've had any bad ganking experiences on any of my chars...still traumatized from my first WSG from nigh on 5 years ago...scarred me enough not to go in again till level 60

My first PvP experience was in Ashenvale, back in Vanilla. Our GM was being attacked by a lvl 60, so me and a guildie, being gentlemen, came speeding to her rescue (we were all around lvl 25-30 at the time). We managed to take down the horde, but he was suddenly backed up by another 60 (we recognized their lvl's due to epic mounts). So we called in another guildie, and had a pretty evenly matched fight.
We'd hang around Astranaar and try to draw them close to a guard or ambush them while they were low on HP.
After about 30mins, they get backed up by 4-5 more horde, and we end up getting our butts severely kicked.
So we ask for some help in general channel, giving numbers and whatnot. After a short while, we're answered by some guy telling us not to worry, "Silence is coming". Which we figured was some lvl60 ally guy...
Then we see the horde gathering up just beyond the east bridge in Astranaar, ready to storm in and kill us yet again. And just as we're getting ready to go down fighting, the chat is suddenly spammed by a ton of yells and battlecries and 30-40 allies come charging through the town, wiping out most of the horde and chasing down any survivors! Was an awesome experience, tbh!

(Silence was a pvp guild, btw)
Anyway, that's how it was ally side on my server. Horde would attack Astranaar, Alliance would attack Crossroads. StV was a violent gank fest constantly. Best way to level there was with an armed escort. I was ganked for 6hours there! (I'm a very stubborn person

)
And it was great!
The point to my charming little story?
PvP means Player vs Player. Gear, level or numbers are irrelevant. It's players killing other players, and ganking is a part of that. Don't like it? Then don't go near it. May seem harsh, but that's how it is. PvP servers were made specifically for that reason: So people could enjoy the risk of being attacked by the opposite side at almost any time.
Sure, there are some who take it a bit far and spend hours corpscamping lowbies. But there's also PvE'rs who are douchebags (the kind that insist on high GS and will kick or leave for the smallest thing).
At the end of the day, you can either take steps to avoid running into those people, or you learn to live with it.

See, that was standard Alliance behaviour on all the realms I've played on, especially STV outside Booty Bay. There was always a lone flagged Alliance character backed up by a group of hidden (unflagged) players. Regarding the lone Tauren walker, it's always been in my experience that Alliance kill her every time she's up and hang around flagged hoping to be attacked and then the hidden friends scenario unfolds.
And sorry Palladia, my bubble is firmly intact, it takes more than a snide jab to burst it
As for the Crossroads, Saturo pretty much summed that up, they attack in large numbers but as soon as a few Horde 80s show they bolt. This also unfolds in WG when a battle is not on. Lone Alliance don't gank fishers or miners but they do if they outnumber the Horde 3:1. As soon as the Horde player has friends come to support, the Alliance flee but linger around waiting to see if the Horde leave and then resume outnumber gank attacks.
I've been on Baelgun for a while now so this is all very much what I see there. The Horde side is pretty laid back about PvP and don't generally harrass and gank Alliance (of course some do but it's nowhere near the degree the Alliance do it - for example, you can often find a group of Alliance hanging around the Horde camp when Alliance control WG but you never, ever see Horde doing the same around the Alliance camp when we hold WG - and as I mine the heck out of WG quite often I fly past the Alliance camp many, many times) or even get to worked up when an "(Capital City) is under attack!" message spams. Of course I suspect this may be due to an overriding desire to troll and spam trade chat instead....
