What we have to remember about Varian is that he watched his Father, and then his mentor get killed by the orcs. He also was forced to watch his city be razed to ground, then had to be a gladiator for orcish entertainment.
That being said, it does not absolve him of any responsibility of being a prick. He is acting out his psychology, just as much as Garrosh is acting out his psychosis to emulate his father from the Blood Haze days.
But that doesnt excuse either of them from being xenophobic.

Definitely. I never said it did, and I think they are great examples of how nothing is penultimate good or evil in WoW. Everything is muddy; you meet someone that seems to be virtuous and then you find out that they're virtuous because they're repenting some act of evil they carried out.. or vice versa.
My point was simply that they're not Hitler, and I have a problem with that crude generalisation.
