I always had the same problem with the movies. They make reference to stuff like that, and I never quite understood how they'd know that. Supposedly Munroe had the same problem with it.

There actually are falcons in the star wars universe.

The snow falcon was an avian native to Rhinnal. These creatures became extinct prior to the rule of the New Republic.
There's no reason for people to not know about the word 'falcon' or species of falcon

Still, an extinct species from ONE planet? I very seriously doubt they would have been that famous. Besides, that seems to have been taken from one of the books, and those aren't canon.

They're famous enough that their holocron was one of the bigger attractions at the zoo on Coruscant.
The millennium falcon was actually named after a bat-falcon.
And if you're referring to the canon being only the films, which technically yeah the films are the canon then you might see that it's a tad bit pointless for them to run around and gather vague references to everything ever mentioned in the movies and then somehow fit the story line.
Like it'd be pointless if for some reason Han Solo started telling the entire background story of the Millennium Falcon then in turn went and showed Luke the specific bird.

Good point. Still, the fact that it's from the books makes it a moot point. There are no falcons in canon, and it's not likely that any species would be famous enough to be known to people all over the galaxy.

You know he's actually talking to Kenobi and not Luke Skywalker about 'What the Millenium Falcon' is. D:
Han Solo: Han Solo. I'm captain of the Millennium Falcon. Chewie here tells me you're lookin' for passage to the Alderaan system?
Obi-Wan: Yes indeed, if it's a fast ship.
Han Solo: Fast ship? You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon?
Obi-Wan: Should I have?
Han Solo: It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. I've outrun Imperial starships. Not the local bulk cruisers mind you, I'm talking about the big Corellian ships now. She's fast enough for you old man. What's the cargo?
Obi-Wan: Only passengers. Myself, the boy, two droids... and no questions asked.
Han Solo: [chuckles] What is it? Some kind of local trouble?
Obi-Wan: Let's just say we'd like to avoid any Imperial entanglements.
So it's a moot point in arguing that comic strip because the conversation never had Luke in it to begin with. And the possibility exists that Ben Kenobi knew what a falcon was due to the holocron libraries in the Jedi Temple.

Here's another example of botched logic.

im so confused, maybe in Star Wars universe, a falcon is a random signal one gives to another while smuggling, with no reference to a bird at all even.
they technically dont speak english right?

The Millennium Falcon was named after a Bat Falcon an animal, which is in a book, but books aren't canon so there's no way using canon to prove falcons existed in Star Wars because they don't actually ever show a falcon/bat falcon.
