The color of the background is too close to the color of the bow, so it doesn't show up too well, methinks. Or do you mean the bow itself too? The bowstring appears to be missing, which kind of throws the whole thing off. The overall design seems solid, but you're right, this first attempt didn't come out cohesively.

Very true in all regards. Unfortunately, model viewer doesn't apply the bowstring to the bow. (I can easily draw that in, though) And I really regret adding a background. I can play with it some more and maybe stumble upon a happy accident!

The background is a good idea in that it "anchors" the piece - the bow would look kind of lost otherwise. Maybe a light green or something for contrast without departing from the "earthy" feel too much.
And yes, GRR at WMV for stripping the bowstring. >_< Drove me nuts when dealing with signature graphics, since I didn't trust myself to draw it in properly.
Good luck!

Not a bad start. A bit too large, though. the bow definitely should be smaller and possibly a darker outline.

I made this before I read your feedback, Talu. So I went ahead and resized a second copy.

The actual title blends a shade too much, but that design seems a lot tighter! I like the second one better because the bow doesn't hang off the bottom as much and the angle on the bow/arrow crossing it is more pleasing to the eye. The bowstring looks great on the green, but unfortunately disappears completely into the forum background. >_< Not much to be done about that, cause it's the right shadow for the bow itself. I guess it could be made whiter so it stands out, but that might ruin the illusion.

I like the second one, even though I think the bow should be smaller still so it doesnt stretch things out too much. Size definitely is something to be mindful of. A drop shadow can easily be placed on it so the bow stands out. Photoshop is awesome for that. x3

I like that, though i still think the font could be spruced, maybe a drop shadow too. Do you got a blank copy of that button without the text? I can probably put those things on there. I'm sure I got a new hunter-esque fonts.

I added a second one in the post that has a drop shadow.

I have photoshop CS4, and I know how to download fonts. If there's a font everyone likes better, I could easily download and add it. (assuming that it's free).
Also keep in mind that no one has decided on using this, it's just me experimenting.

Hmm...how hard would it be to see the other bow position with the drop shadow? Provided that it doesn't hang off the bottom so much; resizing might be in order. And possibly a shadow effect on the text for more contrast? Even though it's readable, it doesn't pop.
(Sorry, just thinking out loud.)

Sorry, Razzy. I didnt know what you use. I was just actually gonna experiment with the fonts I have(I have too many to name) and see what would look okay.

One thing to keep in mind is that ranks by post count can be entirely different than titles by special group. In other words, we can use one type of image for post count ranks and another set - or even completely separate non-similar images - for Hunter Trainer, Stable Master, etc.
(In fact, I'd like to break Hunter Trainer out into different types of titles to mark people who do avatars, people who do videos, people who do mods, people who research pets, etc. That's not what this thread is brainstorming, though - we're focusing on ranks here.

)

Now that's an interesting train of thought to follow...
Post count lends itself to a cast/focus bar or the pawprints.
The ranks lend themselves to a <Title> graphic or something like what Razzy's working on.

As an aside: I just edited the hell out of this thread, including deleting a bunch of posts. I probably went overboard, but I wanted to keep it as much on topic as possible without losing any of the brainstorming. If I killed something I shouldn't have, you have my apologies - and feel free to PM me about it. Now back to the brainstorming!

Since I missed that red crabs are a favorite of Mania's, and Razzy's been kind enough to make bow and arrow forum ranks, what if, where Mania's pawprints are at now, were little red crabs instead?
