Pets for the Forsaken!

by Forsaken Ranger
Greetings! Long-time lurker and this is my first post!
I am currently playing a Forsaken (Undead) Hunter on an RP server, so I am working on tailoring my pets toward being "appropriate" to the lore/character. Naturally anyone can have any pet they want (not arguing that), but I am angling my Hunter, Ardaion, as more of a 'Dark Ranger', in the sense he uses shadow magic and necromancy for his abilities, instead of the powers of life and nature, as living Hunters do.
To that end, I am filling his stable with pets that are either 'undead' or 'friendly' toward the Undead, since most animals in lore are not supposed to be. There is mention in several quests of normal dogs and horses, for example, being spooked and fearful of the Forsaken.
I wanted to ask for thoughts on the idea and suggestions of pets that would fit the general concept. I have a tentative list, but I still have plenty of slots left so if you have anything to add, please do.
PLANNED STABLE
Bat: White - Tamed (Named Ressan after the rare mob he was)
Bear: Diseased White - Need 71/72 to tame
Bird of Prey: Undead Eagle - Tamed (Named Talon)
Boar: Undead - Tamed (unnamed as yet)
Dog: Grey Darkhound - Need 69-71 to tame
Spider: Grey Bone Spider - Tamed (Named Jenerae)
Wolf: Diseased Wolf - Tamed (Named Celaeno)
Wolf: Ghost Worg - Tamed without sword(preferred it) (unnamed at yet)
As you can see, I still have plenty of slots left! So suggestions and ideas for pets that wound be suitable for the idea of a Forsaken Ranger?

Hi, and welcome to the forums!

I have an undead hunter doing a theme of dead and gothic pets so I'll post of few pics of some of the pet ideas I'm going with. ^_^
In my opinion, carrion birds are perfect pets for undead hunters, they're scavengers and we're covered in rotting flesh. I think the old world models are more suiting than the outlands or condor ones.
Zaricotl scares the crap out of me which is why I think he makes a good choice.
The color of these blue guys is stunning in game.
Olm seems fitting as well as the undead hawk.
Hyenas, like carrion birds, are scavengers and seem fitting.
Albino turtle with red eyes makes him look a little demonic.

Omg... aside from the hound (i tamed a Plague Hound because of the pretty green rune colors) you are EXACTLY the same RP design my hunter is :O Same pets as well though again, i went with a Green Runed Plague Hound and I also tamed Olm the Wise because hes ghostly now...
... i will brb to look at her stable to list off a few more you might find interest in
^The grey/blue vulture is also one i tamed but i had too many birds so i abandoned.. Same for Ressan the Needler though that was more cause i had just too many flapping pets when i let him go
Edit: Better yet, heres her armory page. Dont mind all the kitties i own except Toxicdose cause im currently waiting for 4.1 to change their forms since i want to see what the new makeover looks like. I also as ^ posted had the white hyena but after posting in a thread about how they used to stand with heads tall and proud, i started to lose interest in the hunched position and abandoned him..

Now the reason I included gothic pets to Yzma's collection is because I like to be covered on buffs/debuffs for PvE and PvP so I'll give you some of those suggestions as well.
The Cringer cat; looks sort of like he had an acid bath so kind of fitting for an undead.
My boyfriend actually gave me the idea for Humar and he looks amazing next to my hunter.
This guy creeps me out with his jello brain, but the exposed brain sorta says dead to me and the colors are gothic looking.
This raptor skin is amazing for a gothic pet.
Haven't been able to get this guy yet, but he just oozes gothic and sinister to me.
Black fox, not much to say.
This guy actually fits surprisingly well next to an undead hunter. I figure he's had a barrel of plague tossed on him and that's why he fits with Yzma.
Albino croc, same as the white turtle.
For a more gothic worm look:

or
And a ghost one:
Lots of horrible camping, but one amazingly gothic looking pet.

You might like the color more then i did, might also like the name he used to have lol, Felbelly xD

I dont know if the snake really matches but its really gorgeous and it miiiight but not sure, my worgen sure likes his (named it Mesmerize)

Tarantulas I like more then Bone Spiders but their eyes creep me out

Ive found that the Dark Grey Spider really didnt suit undead so i abandoned it, light grey looks nicer but i have yet to tame one, spiders name was Gorebone

Very stunning in-game
I post the names of the pets i used to own before i abaondoned them to help give you an idea of a fitting evil or in felbellys case, humorous name incase you are at a loss. Ressan was previously named Swiftghost, the grey/blue vulture i had named Deathwind, i cant remember what i named my hyena though...
Hope these help add to the spam of pet ideas xD

Thank you all for the replies!
Oh, I rather like the carrion bird in the dark blue skin. He’s rather neat-looking. I might go see if I can grab him.
Xakaal, that’s neat! I figured someone else had done something similar, but I still really loved the concept.

I thought about the rune-darkhound, which is neat, but I also really loved the darker skin too and I haven’t seen anyone with one yet.
Oh, the exposed brain silithid is rather neat! I might have to give him a try when I get high enough! I also rather like that black/dark grey wasp, as well as the dark jormungar.

Get yourself a Ghost Saber

Dangit Astratia, I was just making a post saying I was shocked and dismayed no one had suggested that one, as it was my first thought. The spectral used to even be listed as Undead and did not start out tameable.

Lawls, ghost sabers are eeeepic, i have one on 3/5 of my hunters but i cats, aside from Winna's Kitten i felt didnt go well with a 'forsaken ranger' or the previous life of a Human Ranger (if thats what your background history is Ardaion) so i kinda omitted that. Its completely just me though, i say that if you really like the pet, go ahead and tame it and if its for roleplay, theres endless possibilities to come up with a background story of how the bond came to be ^^
Edit: Seeing the exposed brain silithid, he too is kinda added into my view of not really fitting for a ranger but for those of you who love that model i am totally positive you guys have made it work out so you can get away with running around with this bizzare bettle-brain-monster thingy LOL

So, what spec? Seems like Survival might be most fitting, what with Black Arrow and so much magic damage overall. But, that would limit your pet choices. If you were to go BM, may I suggest one of the green core hounds? Green or yellow fire would work; the point is that the beast looks more plague-like, and isn't closely associated with Ragnaros & co. Then you also have the possibility of corpse worms (white, non-jormungar worms), and the damaged boss silithid.
For non-exotic pets, you have ghostly options if you want to try that. There's Ghost Saber, Angered Arrakoa Protector, and . Also, there's the Carrion Scarabs in EPL, which gives the idea of beetles being more likely to mingle with Forsaken, with persuasion. The hunched cats (glowing red eyes) seem to be outcasts in a sense, like the case with the Cursed Offspring of Har'koa. The spiky wind serpents look sinister (and their debuff is great for SV!), as do ravagers, nether rays (you should see the mouths of those creatures, and Nether Shock sure looks dark and twisted), and spiky raptors.

Cant believe i actually have an excuse for being weird and taking these screenshots when i was checking out the Nether Rays LOL!!!
Oh mah gaaawwwwd its gonna eat me!!!..... Err... Once its defrosted!!!!
Only problem with them is that they dont have an idle position, really bugs the hell outta me to see that.... Marshfang Slicers have a gorgeous greyish silver and blue lightning shaped stripes (? cant remember..) that really were beautiful with Paudette
Edit: If your willing to go to the trouble of getting an ally to do the Lupus Pupus quest till your successful at taming an Oil-Stained Wolf then you might like him
Yes yes.. just ignore the worm in the background that after a couple minutes tried to eat my face off..

A similar idea would be to have your Dark Ranger be a specialist in using venoms and stings. Those Forsaken sure love them deadly brews! So, a second theme would be potent, venomous pets. There are serpents, scorpids, wasps, and worms for you to try. These pet classes have or used to have a special ability that was related to a natural venom or poison (or in the case of worms, acidic spit) You can expand that theme to creatures that are listed as being venomous or noxious, like so:
'venom' search results, and
'noxious' search results.

Can we say stinky???!!! We need to be able to tame stinky the undead dog from icc!!!
While we are at it a maghmar skin would be awesome. (fire worm!)
How about the cat from storm peaks??? The rock cat im sure im not the only hunter that has ever asked for it....
It will never happen but a rare phoenix pet..
It would be cool to be able to reforge pets like we do weapons for pets that lose their racial abilities such as spirit beasts.

I would KILL to see the undead dogs with the core hound skeleton turned into tameable pets. There arent many in the game and they aint the easiest to aquire (least the one at The Avalance in Sholazar and ICC arent.. i only remember those two) but it'd be soooo friggin sweet

!!!
Yess... i want CatSkinGem (thats what im calling it lol.) such as that obsidian looking cat in storm peaks-- blizz has a huge collection of colored skins for that model-- unless those posts were people recoloring them... i also saw RidingSkinGem ones i think... i have no idea how to search up that thread again, i dont remember the title it had >.<

Nope, there are multiple colors of the gem cat that can be viewed on wowmodelviewer. I'm sure that they were developed for the jewelcrafting figurines, but hey, so were the ruby serpents

i hope they get enough attention by the gamers to convince blizz to throw us a couple lol
Edit: omg i know what you should name your undead boar Ardaion, lol Bertonias! (sounds better then it looks xD i love my piggy Bert and just the name Bert in general (my horse in RL was named Bert), does your boar shake his butt constantly? mine has the reputation of shaking his bacon butt alll daaayyy looong xD)

Guys, I think we should stay on track and keep this about pets for Forsaken Ranger's hunter to tame.
There's a suggestion thread for the lurker if you'd like to make requests.
And, in my haste to post before having to take the boyfriend and myself to work, I forgot about the ghost saber (which is sad because my undead hunter has one).
I also forgot to mention this guy for a gothic look.
As well as either of the green ones for a plague look.

and
This little gal actually looks more gothic in game than she appears here, and smart casts her interrupt to boot.
This warpie could also be considered gothic/acid-washed.
And there's this guy as an alternative tank to a turtle.
I don't know how you feel about spirit beasts, but the ghostly ones would be befitting of an undead hunter. Terrorpene might as well if you don't mind some camping.

Some really awesome suggestions, thank you!
I am planning to go Beast Master/Survival spec for role-play purposes, and to give myself lots of pet options. I've always loved Beast Master.
I would love to be able to tame the undead core hound. I would definitely have one of those on Ardaion! And the idea of having him be a poison specialist is something I hadn't considered before, but definitely has some merit!
Thank you all again for some wonderful ideas, and feel free to toss out some more! I plan to try several pets and see which ones click properly with my guy.

Your planned pets fit very well

And yes, the green core hound too.

On my own lowbie Forsaken hunter, I have much of the same--a diseased bear/wolf, spiders, intent to get skeletal pets, etc.
However, one I was utterly taken with--and will probably now level with--was quite unexpected and, I think, spectacularly matching.

May not be the best image, and in all honesty, I never really liked these guys. They're skeletal--gaunt, starving. But then, so is my Forsaken. Their eyes glow bright yellow, almost sickly--but then... so do my hunter's. Her hair is even the same exact shade as the wolf's fur--and yes, I made the journey as a level 14 on a PvP realm out to Elwynn to tame it. It's possible to get into the Human starting area without dying--you can run up over the hills to the right of the entrance. I think it's totally worth it

But yeah, I think this is one of those pets that proves that "context" makes or breaks it--some pets are just silly unless combined with the right hunter!
Edit--better pic
