Tell us what you're avoiding by spending time posting here :D

I'm dodging around starting a paper. Midterm, to be precise. UGH. If I don't make eye contact, maybe it'll go away?

Procrastinating? I love this game!

I should probably be working on some of my homework right now, but I don't want to. All I need to do is find pictures and content for a website I'm making... Shouldn't take too long... >>'' riiiiight....

Aggravating my senioritis. :D

I should be working on two essays, one 800-1000 words, the other 5-8 pages, a multitude of art projects, scholarships, and sketches I owe people on dA.

Mmm, procrastination!

I should be doing the Nth edit of my thesis, but after essentially writing the whole damn thing in two weeks and doing countless edits in the past week, I'm sick of it. *sigh* However, since playing WoW is too much like procrastination, I've been wasting time surfing the web instead... >.> I'm an idiot.

Oh! Haha. You really want to know? ;)

It's a comparative study of the way Denmark and Canada approach, as the two countries have vastly different responses, both popular and institutionalised. I've moved away from typical immigration research causal models to explore the way perceptions of the diversity of the receiving populations' ingroup and outgroup (that is, "Danes" and "immigrants") shape the dominant discourses. It's only a small piece of the pie, obviously, but I think it's been overlooked. People tend to focus on one or the other ("nationalism causes intolerance," or "attitudes about immigrants are shaped by stereotypes about the immigrants," that kind of thing).

I've used data from a large international survey on national identity as well as 20 interviews I carried out with people that work with immigration (politicians, public servants, researchers, journalists, that kind of thing) to highlight how the perceptions of the diversity of the 'self' (what I call intradiversity) and perceptions of the diversity of the 'other' (extradiversity) differ between the two countries.

It's actually insanely interesting stuff, I'm just kinda... overworked, overtired, and in need of a long break. >_<

Teigan wrote:Actually, that is an interesting approach. I like it. How do Canada and Denmark differ? I know nothing about either country's immigration policies. I take it you are from one of them? And, what have you concluded so far?
Thank you. :)
I'm originally from Denmark, my husband is from Canada, and we've had personal experience with both countries' immigration systems (we live in Canada now).
They have very different approaches at the government level, which are reflected in dominant discourses. Canada's dominant discourses (nation-wide -- they differ if you look at community level, for sure) are about being "a country of immigrants" and everyone having immigration background if you go back far enough. In Denmark, the dominant discourses emphasise homogeneity, Danish culture is seen as stable over centuries, and the immigrant population is described as very homogeneous sub-groups in society. The Danish population (and immigration policies) is considerably less open towards immigrants than the Canadian population.
A really interesting discovery I've made is that the Danish discourses focus on social groups, while the Canadian discourses emphasise individuals and individual differences.
Teigan wrote:Also, since I take it this is sociology...I know of a good excuse for you to play WoW! Apparently, according to http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2008/0 ... s-spies-w/ there is this government project called Reynard. According to the article "Reynard will seek to identify the emerging social, behavioral and cultural norms in virtual worlds and gaming environments." Including WoW! Of course, the end goal is to find all those terrorists lurking in WoW....lol...they should start in Goldshire! But, sounds sociology related enough to me! :)
Haha it's true. My department actually has a research centre on mmorpgs. It's been around a while, that announcement references the old location (the department moved in late 2005). Most of my buddies working there studied WoW. :) Unfortunately it's too late in the game for me to change research topics... ;)

And speaking of procrastination, I should get back to my draft.

I really can't afford to procrastinate anymore. It sucks. -_-
Two weeks left of college, and I have two major assignments to finish. Sculpture one is going alright, need to chop up more wood on Tuesday. Really need to finish my design for the website I'm making too. /sigh
Sculpture is worrying me a bit though. My professor is pregnant, due in less then a month. She was hoping to make it far enough to finish grading us, but she was forced to go on sickleave, and can't now. That leaves our final grades in the hands of another prof. That can be very bad, because for this kind of course, you're basically graded on how you progress throughout the year. The professor grading our last projects isn't the one who has been watching that progress. Makes for purely technical marking, which isn't always the best of things in an art program.

On top of that, I need to start looking for a place to live next year when I move to the other end of the Province to finish my degree. @,@
