I never understood why this show was on the history channel, that and ice road truckers and that other show where the two guys go around ripping off old people.

A lot of stuff on Pawn Stars is historical. :3
And American Pickers isn't about ripping off old people - they're pickers and they give a fair price. I mean, they have to transport it and sell it to someone else. Why would someone buy something for the exact price and sell it for that price again? No profit.
I've never really watched Ice Road Truckers, though. Not my kind of thing.

Pawn Stars doesn't really teach you anything about history though; it's just a pawn shop.
And AP offers like half of what somethings worth and then turn around and sell it for nearly double; they already have buyers for certain things lined up. They blatantly attempt to low-ball people, and then the episode where the guy had his son doing it. Lol, I know people with a lot of antique things around here and they do not want the picker guys on their property D:

I never really did understand why the show was on the History channel either (along with a few others), but I always enjoyed it. Good to know that it's on Netflixs.

I love it for the tension over how much money the person will get IF the item is worth anything.
But after the success of Pawn Stars, Tru TV launched Hard Core Pawn. Its about a family that runs a pawn shop but there's much more drama involving the family themselves.

Personally if I had my way you wouldn't see stuff like that on History channel BUT if I was running things they would also be out of business, so... yeah. I think it's just a tradeoff - stuff like Pickers / Truckers / Loggers etc may have little to no historical value but A) it gets the ratings so they can afford to pay the fairly exorbitant price demanded by actual history program producers and B) at least it's not American Idol.
