Xbox problems

okay so today i came home to play my Xbox and it wont read any of my game discs just tells me the tray is empty......tried everything shot of opening it up and voiding any chance at microsoft fixing it. im trying to think of cheap ways i can get it fixed....my family is limited on budget rightn ow and any suggestions would be great.
not sure what value at a trade in store would be (i still have the white 4gb one) but if its fair i could add that to getting the new slim model that i hear runs much better
