Looking for suggestions for a literature inspired pet theme

Hi there!

So I have been browsing the site and the forums for quite some time now, but signed up only today. I've got two 85 hunters who I've levelled recently (to be honest I levelled the 2nd because I liked playing hunter so much and to have one on my main server) and fell totally in love with this class. I've got all of the Cata and Northrend rares with one of them, although due to a very low server population didn't have to camp for anyone of them. Because only going for rares which nearly everyone has soon bored me, I decided to go for a decent pet theme with one of my hunters. At first I was thinking of a colour scheme, I confess I've been inspired by the Random Pet Challenge on this board. Finally I decided that a theme with pets with literary references would be a nice and challenging choice and as I'm a huge fan of literature I thought it was a fitting theme for me as well.

So here's a pic of my first stable inhabitant - Nevermore and me weeping for Lenore (the oil-stained hawk seemed the closest fit to a velvety black raven for me):

Some other ideas I've already got:
  • The Lone Hunter - some reference to Carson McCuller's The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, haven't yet decided on a name though
  • black panther - Rilke, although I might wait until the hunched cats are available in ZG after 4.1, as their downwards gaze seems more fitting to Rilke's poem
  • dog - Fang, yes, I did read all the HP books!
  • of course the Jungle Book gives some opportunities as well, might go for a snake
  • as well thought of naming Gondria Blake referring to Blake's "Tyger, Tyger burning bright, in the shadow of the night"
  • a piggy named Snowball, as in Orwell's Animal Farm
Ok well, these are my main ideas so far, I'm sure you guys will come up with of loads of terrific other things which I didn't think of, any suggestions will be higly appreciated. Suggestions on pet models which would fit my ideas are also very welcome. :)

Jack London's Call of the Wild (Buck)
Rudyard Kipling wrote several other animal stories along the Jungle Book. The white Seal (Kotick), Rikki-Tikki-Tavi (mungo of the same name), Toomai of the Elephants (Toomai, Kala Nag)
Watership Down by Richard Adams (Hazel, Fiver, Efrafa, Blackavar, Hyzenthlay...)

Hmm that's only animal stories I thought of. Love the idea!

The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia McKillip seems well suited. I tried doing that theme once, but it didn't work out for me. Perhaps it would for you. :)

And you don't even have to limit yourself to animal names. If there is a particular novel you're fond of (preferably with a Lot of characters), you can just name all your pets on one hunter after characters in that story.

How about Moby Dick? That's literature. Personally though, I would vote for Hitchhiker's Guide names. Ford would make an excellent wolf, for example.

I read Animal Farm....

Alternatively, I think "Hound" would make a good dog, as in The Hound from Fahrenheit 451. That, or Terrorpene can be Guy, since at first, both burned things. Maybe over time, Terrorpene can become Ghamoo'ra, to really stick with the literature? *shrugs.*

How about going Terry Pratchett on this and get a cat named Greebo?
Or Terry Goodkind's wolf Brophy?

I also agree that the Jungle Book makes for the best pets: Shere Khan, Bagheera, and Baloo.

Personally, the theme I went with was Lord of the Rings names/places/people (I have a companion that is pretty much encyclopedic with entries)... Each animal that I tamed starts with a unique letter, alphabetical by the order I caught them.

Richard Adams' The Plague Dogs has Rowf and Snitter the dogs and Tod (more correctly, The Tod) the fox.

No literature pet collection would be complete without a Silithid or Beetle named GregorSamsa. 8-)

What about ShaiHulud the golden worm? (Dune, of course!)

For wolves there are also names from A Song of Ice and Fire: GreyWind, Shaggydog, Summer, Lady, Nymeria, and Ghost.
