BM vs MM

So my guildie didn't believe me that BM was a competitive spec now when it comes to raid dps. so he challenge me to a dps competition on the sw training dummies. We went in unbuff and started even though he totally out geared me. He ended up with 24k peak and 21k stable dps while i was at 20k peak and 17k stable in my horrible gear. even though he won the little competition he ended up going bm.
Man I love that I can offically say I'm a beast mastery hunter again!
My horrible gear:

I'm loving that BM is good again.
Not as great as it was in TBC, but it's up there!
Also, remember that MM DPS is highest when the target is above 80% health or so, which really stinks as in my experience, my DPS peaks at the end of a fight, and you can't exactly kill those training dummies.

True I'm still wondering what dps would've been with his gear. Oh well I'll find out after I gear up this hunter now that my pally doesn't need gear

Actually after all the latest patches, BM is ahead of MM. AdamSavage relayed it to me so you'd have to ask him.
Find my article on Mania's Arcania blog to show your guildie, including the cap of my DPS. ;3 That should hush him.

Acording to female dwarf bm is ahead of mm by around 500 dps.
Edit: 352 item lvl is descent gear. Specally this early into the expansion where heroics and raiding is harder compared to lk.

Ah thanks. I couldn't remember where you got the info from.

I didn't realize how much things had changed until a week and a half ago when I finally got Malevolance and an xbow upgrade. The next raid night I get a whisper from the leader that I'm topping the dps charts all of a sudden. I don't have a dps meter, so I didn't know. Kinda figured it was a fluke, but my dps has really been up there ever since.

Bm is easier to bring up the dps then marks. I find marks takes longer to build up the dps. I just wish my buddy would learn to play his hunter. I've tried to tell him he should be using serpent sting and cobra shot. However he wont listen as thinks it's not worth the focus. I told him you only need to apply is once as Cobra shot will refresh it and he still thinks he is doing good.. It was worse before. He would just spam arcane shot all the time and use other shots here and there.

I consider it horrible since I still have 2 ilvl 333 pieces and quite a bit of 346 even thought you can get full epics pre raid I believe.

I'm very much enjoying the fact that all trees are competitive these days, but to say which is better, really does come down to...
Firstly the encounter, some fights punish melee dps severely (e.g Atramedes) and therefor BM ,and others keep you constantly on the move hindering MM type rotations (Al'akir, namely 1st phase). Some fights are just designed differently, making certain specs shine more than others .
Secondly, it really depends on what spec you are passionate about/comfortable with and know best.
If you've played BM for along time you will be able to see the little things easier and faster to squeeze that little bit more dps out, and the same could be said about all specs.
3rdly you could also check things like world of logs and other such number/report/dps gathering sites. Then see what those whom try their hardest to bring the highest amount of personal dps to every different type of encounter and boss within raids, are using. I would not really recommend using these sites as a base to strictly follow and use for casual raiding as such, but will defiantly show you what the top players are doing and their numbers associated.
I for one am so very very happy that this is the 1st time that i can remember I actually want one of each each spec. They all have strengths and weaknesses, pros and cons and perform better than the others in certain situations. I'm currently MM/BM but am re-specing all the time, that said, I still <3 my hunter

Oh really? :O))
Ppl in 4-t11 etc etc pulling 20-25K in MM/SV spec.
But not 20K in Kurenio gear, sorry :O))
So I can say "20K is a cake" too, but I wouldn't.

20k Peak and not sustained dps ? Yes I believe it for the gear he has.

Yes! This totally, exactly! ^-^
As for Rotation, BM rotation is very easy.
HM > SS > BW(though I only use this during big trash pulls and bosses) > KC(used all the time when it comes up) > AS > CS(til I got enough focus to push out AS or KC)
When Kill Shot is able to be used, Kill Shot becomes top priority, then Kill Command.
Thats really all there is to it for the BM hunter rotation.

Yep, BM rotation is easy this days.
I got same rotation, half 359, half 353 (ZA/ZG) + few blue heroics.
But pulling 15.5K on dummy...
