Just curious what all of your opinions are about these "End of the World" theories that are being proposed. Me personally, I think they are all bullshit (sorry about langauge?), and used to make a profit. To me it seems whoever creates these ideas are trying to create some mass hysteria, using religion, ancient civilizations, ect. to scare people into paying half their life savings in order to "save themselves" If it happends it happends.

May 21st: Survived
October 21st: Who knows?
December 21st: Who knows?
And plenty more...

Well the December one is due to the mayan calendar, when 'translated' into english, ending on December 21st, 2012... However, there is one major flaw, they used the numbers as is, and did not reflect them over to Base 10 (Mayans used base 5), thus making the date far earlier than Dec. 2012. In fact, it's such a jump that if the mayans calendar was correct, none of our grandparents would even have been born.

The fact is, the Mayans were very intelligent, and knew that they, like most civilizations, would not last for even as long as they made their calendar to, so they more than likely decided that the calendar could be added to if ever needed, should their empire last long enough.

And the 'Rapture' that is supposedly happening is made up by a loon, who is either very confused/crazy, or simply wants attention, as he's predicted the world ending around 10 times now.

In my opinion (I am a Christian, though I prefer not to call myself religious), there is no way to tell when the world ends, no matter how it ends, until it is far to late for us to do anything about it. Be it the rapture, or some meteor blowing us all up, or even the sun dying, I don't think we'll know soon enough, we'll just up and die, much like the Dinosaurs. And I don't think that the world will end anytime soon, at least in my lifetime, so I'll let the schemers and false-prophets predict cockamamie ways the world will end, and I'll live my life knowing that I'll dye sometime, so I might as well live it to the fullest rather than worry about the sun dying and global warming.

I thought there was some sort of law about not inciting mass panic/hysteria which seems to be what these doomsday things are all about.

*sigh* Probably just another law that doesn't apply to religion.

I highly doubt the world is going to end in my lifetime. I do think I'll write a letter for the descendant who does get stuck around that time, though.

As for judgement day and the rapture...you're right, it's pretty much bullshit to me too. Life is, as was said before, really too short to worry about what happens when you die. If my choice of religion(or lack thereof) is going to send me somewhere after I kick the bucket, this God fellow can take it up with me when I'm dead and it matters.

The world as we know it, will end when our Sun uses up all of it fuel reserves and expands to become a red giant. Unless you have factor 1 Million, you'll be toasted alive;)

So anyway, yeah, the world isn't ending any time soon, you're an idiot to think so. As Makkie said, the sun will have to run out of fuel to expand into a red giant, which is when everyone on earth will die. But by then we'll have made massive generational spaceships and moved to the planet named Rebus IV.

No we would of killed ourselves off by then Sat its human nature after all!

Well, if you define the end of the world to be the extinction of our species, then that could easily happen tomorrow; if some conspirators have managed to get elected to the right positions in Russia or the US, they could detonate as many nuclear warheads as can be detonated simultaneously across the surface of the Earth (theoretically, the nation's entire stockpile, but undoubtedly some of the nukes would be vaporized), and maybe launch one at the ISS for good measure (that would require something better than an ICBM). Heck, it could be in a multi-round salvo; get as many nukes airborne as possible before the first ones detonate, then once those salvos are over, use boomers to launch a new one.

The only way I can think of for doomsday predictions to be correct is if this is already in place, yet someone chickened out ten days ago and doomsday had to be aborted to prevent their cover from being blown.

In case anyone is now terrified of this, then all I can say is that these doomsday conspirators missed multiple opportunities during the Cold War where a poke in the eye would have led to MAD (mutually assured destruction) happening, such as the Cuban missile crisis. This is because no conspiracy would be needed; both sides were more than willing to blow up the world in spite of the other if a lone was crossed. Elaborate conspiracies, especially ones with such bizarre goals, are in reality next to impossible to carry out.

I laughed when I read this, but the sad thing is, that will probably be how we all die. I believe anyone can pick a date of death, as long as they have some religious quote to back them up. ...Too funny.

If you ask me, our end will come about when our environment becomes so toxic that human life cannot be sustained any longer. I really do think that public health disasters will be the undoing of societies; look at what the Black Plague did to European society, and that was just a single infectious disease.
