Lest now I have a proper ref pic for you. Heh
Surprised you like my shading too, everyone else says "Where is your light source?!" cause I tend to shade where ever the hell I want. >.<

Welllll... The shading is smooth, and you used all the values (White to black, not just grey). That's great!

Lovely face, but be warned his body is quite uh, misproportionately small.

Don't do that, lol. Just push the right shoulder out a distance of like the width of his face to give his neck somewhere to be and stretch out his pects. Just use some tracing paper and make a rubbing to work off of
Also, his hair reminds me of something out of Arslan. Which is a good thing in an 80s fro kind of way.

Do remember to take perspective and stance into consideration before commenting on proportions

Envisioning him without the shoulder armour I think it looks great. Love the hair texture.

Gradual shading is something I can't do for chocolate

I'm stuck using the manga-style "sudden and grey" shading
though I tend to steer away from shading full stop if I can help it.
But that's just it: the style we use. Don't feel bad because your style is different

See I'm really trying with human and human like creatures...I usually draw dragons and doing this is WAAAAAAY out of my comfort zone. What pushes my aggravation a bit more is that I went to AnatomyPlz.com to learn but nothing seems to be sticking. I'm like a sponge that can't absorb for some reason! D:

I am. Unless she(?) is drawing him in slender human proportions and not troll proportions, then it is off. ofc it looks great for what is the finished portion though.
As for working on anatomy I can't suggest much other than drawing from images or real people. There's little that can be done except to practice and make sure you're not stylizing at all (use your fingers and crossing your eyes to get correct angles and grids to make sure your transfer from image to paper is correctly proportioned). Learning is best done through mistakes after all.
